The Authority of Jesus

28 And when Jesus finished these sayings, (A)the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29 (B)for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.

Jesus Cleanses a Leper

When he came down from the mountain, (C)great crowds followed him. (D)And behold, a leper[a] came to him and (E)knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” And Jesus[b] stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. And Jesus said to him, (F)“See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, (G)show yourself to the priest and (H)offer the gift that Moses commanded, (I)for a proof to them.”

The Faith of a Centurion

(J)When he had entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to him, appealing to him, “Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, suffering terribly.” And he said to him, “I will come and heal him.” But the centurion replied, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but (K)only say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I too am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my servant,[c] ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 10 When Jesus heard this, (L)he marveled and said to those who followed him, “Truly, I tell you, with (M)no one in Israel[d] have I found such faith. 11 I tell you, (N)many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, 12 (O)while the sons of the kingdom (P)will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place (Q)there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 13 And to the centurion Jesus said, “Go; let it be done for you (R)as you have believed.” (S)And the servant was healed at that very moment.

Jesus Heals Many

14 (T)And when Jesus entered Peter's house, he saw (U)his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever. 15 He (V)touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose and began to serve him. 16 That evening they brought to him many who were (W)oppressed by demons, and he cast out the spirits (X)with a word and healed all who were sick. 17 (Y)This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: (Z)“He took our illnesses and bore our diseases.”

28 When Jesus had finished saying these things,(A) the crowds were amazed at his teaching,(B) 29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy(C)

When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. A man with leprosy[a](D) came and knelt before him(E) and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”

Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy. Then Jesus said to him, “See that you don’t tell anyone.(F) But go, show yourself to the priest(G) and offer the gift Moses commanded,(H) as a testimony to them.”

The Faith of the Centurion(I)

When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed,(J) suffering terribly.”

Jesus said to him, “Shall I come and heal him?”

The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.(K) For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.(L) 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west,(M) and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.(N) 12 But the subjects of the kingdom(O) will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”(P)

13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.”(Q) And his servant was healed at that moment.

Jesus Heals Many(R)

14 When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. 15 He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him.

16 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.(S) 17 This was to fulfill(T) what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

“He took up our infirmities
    and bore our diseases.”[b](U)
