Matthew 3:7-12

⁷But when he saw many of ^(A)the Pharisees and ^(B)Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, ^(C)“You brood of ^(D)vipers! Who warned you to flee from ^(E)the wrath to come? ⁸Bear fruit ^(F)in keeping with repentance. ⁹And do not presume to say to yourselves, ^(G)‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from ^(H)these stones to raise up children for Abraham. ¹⁰Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. ^(I)Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

¹¹^(J)“I baptize you with water ^(K)for repentance, but ^(L)he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you ^(M)with the Holy Spirit and ^(N)fire. ¹²His ^(O)winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and ^(P)gather his wheat into the barn, ^(Q)but the chaff he will burn with ^(R)unquenchable fire.”

⁷But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers!^(A) Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?^(B) ⁸Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.^(C) ⁹And do not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’^(D) I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. ¹⁰The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.^(E)

¹¹“I baptize you with^[a] water for repentance.^(F) But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with^[b] the Holy Spirit^(G) and fire.^(H) ¹²His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”^(I)
