Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand

8 ^(A)In those days, when again a great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat, he called his disciples to him and said to them, ²^(B)“I have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. ³And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way. And some of them have come from far away.” ⁴And his disciples answered him, “How can one feed these people with bread here in this desolate place?” ⁵And he asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, ^(C)“Seven.” ⁶And he directed the crowd to sit down on the ground. And he took the seven loaves, and ^(D)having given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and they set them before the crowd. ⁷And they had a few small fish. And ^(E)having blessed them, he said that these also should be set before them. ⁸And ^(F)they ate and were satisfied. And they took up the broken pieces left over, ^(G)seven baskets full. ⁹And there were about four thousand people. And he sent them away. ¹⁰And immediately he got into ^(H)the boat with his disciples and went to the district of ^(I)Dalmanutha.^[a]

The Pharisees Demand a Sign

¹¹^(J)The Pharisees came and began to argue with him, ^(K)seeking from him ^(L)a sign from heaven ^(M)to test him. ¹²And ^(N)he sighed deeply ^(O)in his spirit and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.” ¹³And ^(P)he left them, got into the boat again, and went to the other side.

¹⁹^(A)Of old you spoke in a vision to your godly one,^[a] and said:
    “I have ^(B)granted help to one who is ^(C)mighty;
    I have exalted one ^(D)chosen from the people.
²⁰^(E)I have found David, my servant;
    with my holy oil I have ^(F)anointed him,
²¹so that my ^(G)hand shall be established with him;
    my arm also shall strengthen him.
²²The enemy shall not outwit him;
    ^(H)the wicked shall not humble him.
²³I will ^(I)crush his foes before him
    and strike down those who hate him.
²⁴My ^(J)faithfulness and my ^(K)steadfast love shall be with him,
    and in my name shall his ^(L)horn be exalted.
²⁵I will set his hand on ^(M)the sea
    and his right hand on ^(N)the rivers.
²⁶He shall cry to me, ‘You are my ^(O)Father,
    my God, and ^(P)the Rock of my salvation.’
²⁷And I will make him the ^(Q)firstborn,
    ^(R)the highest of the kings of the earth.
²⁸My steadfast love I will keep for him forever,
    and my ^(S)covenant will stand firm^[b] for him.
²⁹I will establish his ^(T)offspring forever
    and his ^(U)throne as ^(V)the days of the heavens.
³⁰^(W)If his children forsake my law
    and do not walk according to my rules,^[c]
³¹if they violate my statutes
    and do not keep my commandments,
³²then I will punish their transgression with ^(X)the rod
    and their iniquity with stripes,
³³but I will not remove from him my steadfast love
    or be false to my faithfulness.
³⁴I will not violate my ^(Y)covenant
    or alter the word that went forth from my lips.
³⁵Once for all I have sworn ^(Z)by my holiness;
    I will not ^(AA)lie to David.
³⁶His ^(AB)offspring shall endure forever,
    ^(AC)his ^(AD)throne as long as ^(AE)the sun before me.
³⁷Like ^(AF)the moon it shall be established forever,
    ^(AG)a faithful witness in the skies.” Selah

³⁸But now you have ^(AH)cast off and rejected;
    you are full of wrath against your ^(AI)anointed.
³⁹You have ^(AJ)renounced ^(AK)the covenant with your servant;
    you have ^(AL)defiled his ^(AM)crown in the dust.
⁴⁰You have ^(AN)breached all his walls;
    you have laid his strongholds in ruins.
⁴¹^(AO)All who pass by plunder him;
    he has become ^(AP)the scorn of his neighbors.
⁴²You have exalted the right hand of his foes;
    you have made all his enemies rejoice.
⁴³You have also turned back the edge of his sword,
    and you have not made him stand in battle.
⁴⁴You have made his splendor to cease
    and cast his throne to the ground.
⁴⁵You have cut short ^(AQ)the days of his youth;
    you have ^(AR)covered him with shame. Selah

⁴⁶^(AS)How long, O Lord? Will you hide yourself forever?
    How long will your wrath ^(AT)burn like fire?
⁴⁷^(AU)Remember ^(AV)how short my ^(AW)time is!
    For what vanity you have created all the children of man!
⁴⁸^(AX)What man can live and never ^(AY)see death?
    Who can deliver his soul from the power of ^(AZ)Sheol? Selah

⁴⁹Lord, where is your ^(BA)steadfast love of old,
    which by your ^(BB)faithfulness you swore to David?
⁵⁰^(BC)Remember, O Lord, how your servants are mocked,
    and how I bear in my ^(BD)heart the insults^[d] of all the many nations,
⁵¹with which your enemies mock, O Lord,
    with which they mock ^(BE)the footsteps of your ^(BF)anointed.
