A parábola do semeador
(Mt 13.1-9; Lc 8.4-8)
4 Uma vez mais, logo se juntou uma multidão imensa, pelo que entrou num barco e se sentou nele. O barco estava na água, enquanto a multidão ficava à beira-mar, mas em terra.
2 E ensinava as pessoas por meio de parábolas. Numa delas, deu-lhes este ensino: 3 “Ouçam bem: certo homem foi semear. 4 Enquanto semeava, algumas sementes caíram à beira do caminho, vieram as aves e comeram-nas. 5 Outras caíram em solo pedregoso com pouca terra; como o solo não tinha profundidade cresceram logo. 6 Mas quando o sol rompeu, murcharam; e como não ganharam raízes, acabaram por secar. 7 Outras caíram entre espinhos que em pouco tempo sufocaram os rebentos, pelo que não deram grão. 8 Outras, porém, outras caíram em bom solo, cresceram, desenvolveram-se e deram trinta, sessenta ou cem vezes mais. 9 Quem tem ouvidos, ouça!”
Razão das parábolas
(Mt 13.10-23; Lc 8.9-15)
10 E logo que se achou a sós, os que o acompanhavam, juntamente com os doze discípulos, pediram-lhe a explicação das parábolas. 11 Ele respondeu-lhes: “É-vos concedido conhecer o mistério do reino de Deus; mas àqueles que estão fora, tudo se expõe por parábolas.
12 ‘De modo que, ainda que vejam e vejam,
não percebam,
e ainda que ouçam e ouçam, não entendem.
Não estou empenhado em que se arrependam,
nem em perdoá-los.’ ”[a]
13 E acrescenta: “Se não entenderem esta parábola, como compreenderão todas as outras? 14 O homem vai semear a palavra. 15 As sementes que ficam à beira do caminho são aqueles que receberam a palavra; mal a ouvem, logo vem Satanás tirar-lhes a palavra que neles tinha sido semeada. 16 As semeadas em solo pedregoso são os que ouvem a palavra e a recebem com alegria. 17 Todavia, não deitam raízes, antes duram pouco; depois, aparecem dificuldades ou perseguições por causa da palavra, e logo essa pessoa se escandaliza. 18 As semeadas entre os espinhos são os que ouvem a palavra, 19 mas as preocupações desta vida, a ambição da riqueza e os outros desejos surgem e abafam a palavra, pelo que fica sem fruto. 20 Mas as sementes plantadas em solo bom são aqueles que ouvem a palavra e a recebem, e produzem uma colheita trinta, sessenta ou até cem vezes maior!”
A luz do candeeiro
(Lc 8.16-18)
21 Jesus perguntou-lhes: “Quando alguém acende uma lâmpada, será que a coloca debaixo duma caixa ou da cama? Não a coloca antes num candeeiro?
22 Pois nada há oculto que não venha a mostrar-se, nem nada encoberto que não venha a manifestar-se. 23 Quem tem ouvidos, ouça! 24 Cuidado com o que ouvem! A medida que usarem para medir será usada também para vos medir e ainda vos será aumentada. 25 Quem tiver receberá; mas a quem não tem até o que tiver lhe será tirado.
A parábola da semente
26 Vou explicar-vos de outra maneira o reino de Deus: Um lavrador semeou o seu campo e foi embora. 27 Com o passar dos dias, as sementes foram crescendo sem a sua ajuda, 28 pois era a terra que fazia as sementes crescerem. Primeiro, apareceu uma folha, mais tarde, formaram-se as espigas de trigo, até que por fim o grão amadureceu. 29 O lavrador veio logo com a foice e tratou de colhê-lo.
A semente de mostarda
(Mt 13.31-32; Lc 13.18-19)
30 A que compararei o reino de Deus? Que parábola contarei para o explicar? 31 É como uma semente de mostarda; ao ser plantada na terra, embora seja a menor de todas as sementes que existem, 32 cresce e transforma-se na maior de todas as plantas, e dá grandes ramos, em cuja sombra as aves do céu podem fazer os seus ninhos.”
33 Por meio de muitas parábolas como esta anunciava a palavra ao povo, até onde este podia entendê-la. 34 Aliás, nunca o fazia sem lhes contar uma parábola; mas quando estava a sós com os discípulos, explicava-lhes o que queria dizer.
Jesus acalma a tempestade
(Mt 8.18, 23-27; Lc 8.22-25)
35 Ao cair da tarde desse dia, Jesus disse aos discípulos: “Vamos atravessar para a outra margem do lago.” 36 Deixando a multidão para trás, entraram no barco onde ele já estava e começaram a travessia, embora outros barcos os seguissem. 37 Mas logo se levantou um tão grande temporal, com vendaval e ondas rebentando contra o barco, que este já estava cheio de água.
38 Entretanto, Jesus dormia deitado na popa, com a cabeça numa almofada. Inquietos, acordaram-no, gritando: “Mestre, não te preocupa que estejamos quase a morrer?” 39 Ele, levantando-se, repreendeu o vento e disse ao mar: “Aquieta-te!” O vento parou e fez-se uma grande calma. 40 E disse-lhes: “Porque estavam com tanto medo? Ainda não têm fé?”
41 E tomados de grande espanto, perguntavam uns aos outros: “Mas quem é este, a quem o próprio vento e o mar obedecem?”
A cura do homem endemoninhado
(Mt 8.28-34; Lc 8.26-37)
5 Chegaram ao outro lado do lago, à terra dos Gerasenos. 2 Ao desambarcar, um homem vindo dum cemitério, possuído por um espírito impuro, veio ao seu encontro. 3 Este homem morava entre os túmulos e ninguém conseguia prendê-lo nem sequer com correntes. 4 Pois muitas vezes o tentaram prender com grilhões e correntes, mas ele partia os grilhões dos pulsos e despedaçava as correntes, sem que ninguém conseguisse dominá-lo. 5 Durante o dia e pela noite dentro, errava entre os túmulos e pelos montes desertos, dando gritos e ferindo-se com pedras.
6 Mal viu Jesus, vinha este ainda longe, correu ao seu encontro. E deitando-se no chão à sua frente, 7 soltou um grito forte: “Que queres tu de mim, Jesus, Filho do Deus altíssimo? Peço-te por Deus que não me atormentes!” 8 Jesus falou ao demónio que existia dentro dele: “Sai deste homem, espírito impuro!”
9 “Como te chamas?” perguntou Jesus. “Exército, porque somos muitos.” 10 E pedia com insistência a Jesus que não os expulsasse para fora da região. 11 Ora, andava ali perto, no monte acima do lago, uma grande vara de porcos a pastar, 12 e os demónios rogaram-lhe: “Manda-nos para aqueles porcos.” 13 Jesus concordou. Então, os espíritos impuros saíram do homem e entraram nos porcos. A vara de 2000 porcos precipitou-se, caindo por um despenhadeiro no mar, onde se afogou.
14 Os porqueiros fugiram para a cidade e campos, espalhando a notícia, e as pessoas vieram ver o que tinha sucedido. 15 As pessoas dirigiram-se ao encontro de Jesus e viram o endemoninhado ali sentado, agora vestido e em seu perfeito juízo, e ficaram com medo. 16 Aqueles que tinham assistido ao que tinha acontecido ao endemoninhado contavam aos outros. 17 E a multidão chegou até a pedir a Jesus que fosse embora da região.
18 Assim, voltou para o barco e o homem que tinha andado possuído dos demónios pediu a Jesus que o deixasse acompanhá-los. 19 Mas Jesus não quis: “Volta para a tua família e conta-lhe as maravilhas que o Senhor te fez e como foi tão bondoso contigo.” 20 O homem partiu, para percorrer as Dez Cidades, e contava a toda a gente as grandes coisas que Jesus lhe tinha feito, e todos ficavam pasmados a ouvi-lo.
Uma menina morta e uma mulher doente
(Mt 9.18-26; Lc 8.41-56)
21 Quando Jesus atravessou de barco para a outra margem do lago, uma enorme multidão juntou-se à sua volta na praia. 22 O líder da sinagoga daquele lugar, cujo nome era Jairo, veio e prostrou-se a seus pés, 23 suplicando-lhe com insistência: “A minha filha está às portas da morte. Vem colocar as mãos sobre ela para ser curada, e ela ficará viva!” 24 Jesus foi com ele. Uma grande multidão o acompanhava e comprimia.
25 Entre todo aquele povo encontrava-se uma mulher que sofria, havia doze anos, de uma perda de sangue. 26 Durante esse tempo padecera bastante às mãos de muitos médicos, e tinha gasto tanto com eles que ficara pobre, sem ver quaisquer melhoras; antes piorara. 27 Ouvira falar tanto nos espantosos milagres de Jesus que; aproximou-se no meio da multidão por trás e tocou-lhe no manto, 28 pois dizia: “Se ao menos eu lhe tocar no manto, ficarei curada.” 29 De facto, logo que lhe tocou, o sangue parou de correr e percebeu que estava curada.
30 Jesus de imediato sentiu que saíra de si poder e, olhando para trás, perguntou: “Quem foi que me tocou na roupa?”
31 Os discípulos disseram-lhe: “Com toda esta gente à tua volta, ainda perguntas quem te tocou?”
32 Ele continuou a olhar à sua volta para encontrar quem fizera aquilo. 33 Então a mulher, amedrontada e a tremer, sabedora do que lhe tinha acontecido, chegou-se, pôs-se de joelhos diante dele e declarou o que tinha feito. 34 Jesus disse-lhe: “Filha, a tua fé te curou! Vai em paz, estás livre do teu mal!”
35 Jesus falava ainda com ela, quando chegaram uns mensageiros da casa de Jairo, líder da sinagoga, com a notícia: “A tua filha já morreu. Porque estás ainda a incomodar o Mestre?”
36 Jesus, contudo, não fez caso do que diziam e disse para o líder da sinagoga: “Não tenhas medo, crê somente!” 37 Jesus não deixou ninguém acompanhá-lo a não ser Pedro, Tiago e João. 38 Quando chegaram, havia uma grande confusão, ouvindo-se choro e lamentações. 39 E dirigiu-se aos que ali estavam: “Para que é todo este choro e alvoroço? A menina não está morta, apenas dorme!”
40 E riram-se de troça. Mas Jesus mandou todos saírem e, acompanhado do pai e da mãe da criança e dos três discípulos, entrou no quarto onde estava deitada. 41 E segurando-lhe na mão, disse: “Talita kum!” (Que quer dizer: “Menina, levanta-te!”) 42 E a menina, que tinha doze anos de idade, pôs-se imediatamente de pé e começou a andar. Os pais ficaram pasmados. 43 Jesus recomendou-lhes muito que não contassem aquilo a ninguém e mandou que dessem de comer à filha.

The Parable of the Sower(A)(B)
4 Again Jesus began to teach by the lake.(C) The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water’s edge. 2 He taught them many things by parables,(D) and in his teaching said: 3 “Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed.(E) 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times.”(F)
9 Then Jesus said, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”(G)
10 When he was alone, the Twelve and the others around him asked him about the parables. 11 He told them, “The secret of the kingdom of God(H) has been given to you. But to those on the outside(I) everything is said in parables 12 so that,
“‘they may be ever seeing but never perceiving,
and ever hearing but never understanding;
otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!’[a]”(J)
13 Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable? 14 The farmer sows the word.(K) 15 Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan(L) comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. 16 Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. 17 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 18 Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; 19 but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth(M) and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. 20 Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown.”
A Lamp on a Stand
21 He said to them, “Do you bring in a lamp to put it under a bowl or a bed? Instead, don’t you put it on its stand?(N) 22 For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open.(O) 23 If anyone has ears to hear, let them hear.”(P)
24 “Consider carefully what you hear,” he continued. “With the measure you use, it will be measured to you—and even more.(Q) 25 Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.”(R)
The Parable of the Growing Seed
26 He also said, “This is what the kingdom of God is like.(S) A man scatters seed on the ground. 27 Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. 28 All by itself the soil produces grain—first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. 29 As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come.”(T)
The Parable of the Mustard Seed(U)
30 Again he said, “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like,(V) or what parable shall we use to describe it? 31 It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. 32 Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.”
33 With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand.(W) 34 He did not say anything to them without using a parable.(X) But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.
Jesus Calms the Storm(Y)
35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat.(Z) There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”(AA)
41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
Jesus Restores a Demon-Possessed Man(AB)(AC)
5 They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.[b] 2 When Jesus got out of the boat,(AD) a man with an impure spirit(AE) came from the tombs to meet him. 3 This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. 4 For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. 5 Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.
6 When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him. 7 He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me,(AF) Jesus, Son of the Most High God?(AG) In God’s name don’t torture me!” 8 For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!”
9 Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”
“My name is Legion,”(AH) he replied, “for we are many.” 10 And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.
11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. 12 The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.” 13 He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.
14 Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. 15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion(AI) of demons,(AJ) sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 16 Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and told about the pigs as well. 17 Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.
18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. 19 Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them(AK) how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” 20 So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis[c](AL) how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.
Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman(AM)
21 When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake,(AN) a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake.(AO) 22 Then one of the synagogue leaders,(AP) named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. 23 He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on(AQ) her so that she will be healed and live.” 24 So Jesus went with him.
A large crowd followed and pressed around him. 25 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding(AR) for twelve years. 26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, 28 because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes,(AS) I will be healed.” 29 Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.(AT)
30 At once Jesus realized that power(AU) had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”
31 “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’ ”
32 But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. 33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. 34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you.(AV) Go in peace(AW) and be freed from your suffering.”
35 While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader.(AX) “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?”
36 Overhearing[d] what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”
37 He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James.(AY) 38 When they came to the home of the synagogue leader,(AZ) Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. 39 He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.”(BA) 40 But they laughed at him.
After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. 41 He took her by the hand(BB) and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”).(BC) 42 Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. 43 He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this,(BD) and told them to give her something to eat.
