撒种的比喻(A)
4 耶稣又在海边教导人。有一大群人聚集到他那里，因此他上船坐下来。船在海中，群众都朝着海站在岸上。 2 他用比喻教训他们许多事，在教训中他说： 3 “你们听着！有一个撒种的出去撒种， 4 撒的时候，有的落在路旁，小鸟飞来就吃掉了。 5 有的落在泥土不多的石地上，因为泥土不深，很快就长起来。 6 但太阳一出来，就把它晒干，又因为没有根就枯萎了。 7 有的落在荆棘里，荆棘长起来，把它挤住，它就结不出果实来。 8 有的落在好土里，就生长繁茂，结出果实，有三十倍的、有六十倍的、有一百倍的。” 9 耶稣又说：“有耳可听的，就应当听。”
用比喻的目的(B)
10 耶稣独自一人的时候，那些经常跟着他的人和十二门徒，来问这些比喻的意义。 11 耶稣对他们说：“ 神的国的奥秘，只给你们知道，但对于外人，一切都用比喻， 12 叫他们
‘看是看见了，却不领悟，
听是听见了，却不明白，
免得他们回转过来，得到赦免。’”
解释撒种的比喻(C)
13 耶稣又对他们说：“你们不明白这个比喻，怎能明白一切比喻呢？ 14 撒种的人所撒的就是道。 15 那撒在路旁的，就是人听了道，撒但立刻来，把撒在他心里的道夺去。 16 照样，那撒在石地上的，就是人听了道，立刻欢欢喜喜地接受了； 17 可是他们里面没有根，只是暂时的；一旦为道遭遇患难，受到迫害，就立刻跌倒了。 18 那撒在荆棘里的，是指另一些人；他们听了道， 19 然而今世的忧虑、财富的迷惑，以及种种的欲望，接连进来，把道挤住，就结不出果实来。 20 那撒在好土里的，就是人听了道，接受了，并且结出果实，有三十倍的、有六十倍的、有一百倍的。”

21 耶稣又对他们说：“灯难道是拿来放在量器底下或床底下的吗？它不是该放在灯台上吗？ 22 因为没有甚么隐藏的事不被显明出来，没有甚么掩盖的事不被揭露的。 23 有耳可听的，就应当听。”
24 耶稣又对他们说：“要留心你们所听到的，你们用甚么尺度量给人， 神也要用甚么尺度量给你们，并且要超过尺度给你们。 25 因为那有的，还要给他；那没有的，就算他有甚么也要拿去。”
种子发芽生长的比喻
26 耶稣说：“ 神的国好象人在地里撒种， 27 他夜里睡觉，白天起来，种子发芽生长，自己也不知道怎么会这样的。 28 地生五谷是自然的，先长苗，后吐穗，最后穗上结满了子粒。 29 庄稼熟了，就派人用镰刀割下，因为收成的时候到了。”
芥菜种的比喻(E)
30 又说：“我们要把 神的国比作甚么呢？我们可以用甚么比喻来形容它呢？ 31 它好象一粒芥菜种，刚种下去的时候，比地上的一切种子都小， 32 种下以后，生长起来，却比一切蔬菜都大，长出大枝子，甚至天空的飞鸟都可以在它的荫下搭窝。”
33 耶稣用许多这样的比喻，照着他们所能听懂的，向他们讲道； 34 不用比喻，就不对他们讲。只有单独和自己的门徒在一起的时候，才把一切解释给他们听。
平静风浪(F)
35 当天黄昏，耶稣对门徒说：“我们渡到海那边去吧。” 36 门徒离开群众，耶稣已经在船上，他们就载他过去，也有别的船和他同去。 37 忽然起了狂风，波浪不断地打进船来，舱里积满了水。 38 耶稣却在船尾靠着枕头睡着了。门徒把他叫醒，对他说：“老师，我们要死了，你不管吗？” 39 耶稣起来，斥责了风，又对海说：“不要作声！安静吧！”风就停止，大大地平静了。 40 然后对他们说：“为甚么这样胆怯呢？你们怎么没有信心呢？” 41 门徒非常惧怕，彼此说：“这到底是谁，连风和海都听从他？”
治好鬼附的格拉森人(G)
5 他们到了海的那边，进入格拉森人的地区。 2 耶稣一下船，就有一个被污灵附着的人，从墓地里迎面而来。 3 那人经常住在坟墓中间，从来没有人能绑住他，甚至用锁炼都不能。 4 曾经有很多次，人用脚镣和锁炼捆绑他，锁炼却被他挣断，脚镣也被他弄碎，始终没有人能制伏他。 5 他昼夜在坟墓里和山野间喊叫，又用石头砍自己。 6 他远远地看见耶稣，就跑过去拜他， 7 大声呼叫，说：“至高 神的儿子耶稣，我跟你有甚么关系呢？我指着 神恳求你，不要叫我受苦。” 8 因为当时耶稣吩咐他：“你这污灵，从这人身上出来！” 9 耶稣问他：“你叫甚么名字？”他回答：“我名叫‘群’，因为我们众多。” 10 他再三央求耶稣，不要把他们从那地方赶走。 11 附近的山坡上有一大群猪正在吃东西； 12 污灵求耶稣说：“打发我们到猪群那里附在猪身上吧。” 13 耶稣准了他们。污灵就出来，进到猪群里去，于是那群猪闯下山崖，掉在海里淹死了，猪的数目约有两千。 14 放猪的人都逃跑了，到城里和各乡村去报告，大家就来看发生了甚么事。 15 他们来到耶稣跟前，看见那被鬼附过的人，就是曾被名叫‘群’的鬼附过的人，坐在那里，穿上了衣服，神志清醒，他们就害怕。 16 看见的人把被鬼附过的人所遭遇的和那群猪的事，告诉了他们。 17 他们就要求耶稣离开他们的地区。 18 耶稣上船的时候，那被鬼附过的人来求他，要和他在一起。 19 耶稣不许，却对他说：“你回家到你的亲属那里去，把主为你作了多么大的事，并他怎样怜悯你，都告诉他们。” 20 那人就走了，开始在低加波利传讲耶稣为他所作的大事，众人都希奇。
治好血漏病的女人(H)
21 耶稣又坐船渡到那边；还在海边的时候，有一大群人向他围拢过来。 22 当时来了一位会堂的主管，名叫叶鲁。他一看见耶稣，就俯伏在他脚前， 23 迫切地求他说：“我的小女儿快要死了，请你来按手在她身上，把她救活。” 24 耶稣就和他一起去了。
一大群人跟着他，拥挤着他。 25 有一个女人，患了十二年的血漏病， 26 在好些医生手中受了许多痛苦，又花尽了她一切所有的，不仅毫无起色，反而更加沉重。 27 她听见耶稣的事，就从后面来杂在人群中间，摸耶稣的衣服。 28 因为她说：“只要摸到他的衣服，我就必痊愈。” 29 于是她血漏的源头立刻干了，她在身体上感觉到病已经得了医治。 30 耶稣自己立刻觉得有能力从他里面出去，就转过身来对群众说：“谁摸了我的衣服？” 31 门徒对他说：“你看，这么多人拥挤你，你还问‘谁摸我’吗？” 32 耶稣周围观看，要看作这事的女人。 33 那女人知道在她身上所成就的事，就恐惧战兢地前来向耶稣俯伏，把实情全告诉了他。 34 耶稣对她说：“女儿，你的信使你痊愈了，平安地回去吧，你的病已经好了。”
使女孩复活(I)
35 耶稣还在说话的时候，有人从会堂主管的家里来说：“你的女儿已经死了，何必还劳动老师呢？” 36 耶稣听见所说的话，就对会堂主管说：“不要怕！只要信！” 37 于是他不许别人跟他一起去，只带了彼得、雅各和雅各的弟弟约翰。 38 他们来到会堂主管的家，耶稣看见许多人哭泣哀号，一片混乱， 39 就走进去，对众人说：“为甚么大哭大嚷呢？孩子不是死了，是睡着了。” 40 众人就嘲笑他。耶稣把众人都赶出去，带着孩子的父母和跟随他的门徒，进入孩子所在的房间。 41 耶稣拉着孩子的手，对她说：“大利大，古米！”翻译出来就是：“小女孩，我吩咐你起来！” 42 那女孩子就立刻起来行走；那时她已经十二岁了。众人就非常惊奇。 43 耶稣再三嘱咐他们，不要让人知道这事，又吩咐给她东西吃。

The Parable of the Sower(A)
4 And (B)again He began to teach by the sea. And a great multitude was gathered to Him, so that He got into a boat and sat in it on the sea; and the whole multitude was on the land facing the sea. 2 Then He taught them many things by parables, (C)and said to them in His teaching:
3 “Listen! Behold, a sower went out to sow. 4 And it happened, as he sowed, that some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds [a]of the air came and devoured it. 5 Some fell on stony ground, where it did not have much earth; and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of earth. 6 But when the sun was up it was scorched, and because it had no root it withered away. 7 And some seed fell among thorns; and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no [b]crop. 8 But other seed fell on good ground and yielded a crop that sprang up, increased and produced: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.”
9 And He said [c]to them, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”
The Purpose of Parables(D)
10 (E)But when He was alone, those around Him with the twelve asked Him about the parable. 11 And He said to them, “To you it has been given to (F)know the [d]mystery of the kingdom of God; but to (G)those who are outside, all things come in parables, 12 so that
(H)‘Seeing they may see and not perceive,
And hearing they may hear and not understand;
Lest they should turn,
And their sins be forgiven them.’ ”
The Parable of the Sower Explained(I)
13 And He said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables? 14 (J)The sower sows the word. 15 And these are the ones by the wayside where the word is sown. When they hear, Satan comes immediately and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts. 16 These likewise are the ones sown on stony ground who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with gladness; 17 and they have no root in themselves, and so endure only for a time. Afterward, when tribulation or persecution arises for the word’s sake, immediately they stumble. 18 Now these are the ones sown among thorns; they are the ones who hear the word, 19 and the (K)cares of this world, (L)the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. 20 But these are the ones sown on good ground, those who hear the word, [e]accept it, and bear (M)fruit: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.”

The Parable of the Growing Seed
26 And He said, (T)“The kingdom of God is as if a man should [f]scatter seed on the ground, 27 and should sleep by night and rise by day, and the seed should sprout and (U)grow, he himself does not know how. 28 For the earth (V)yields crops by itself: first the blade, then the head, after that the full grain in the head. 29 But when the grain ripens, immediately (W)he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”
The Parable of the Mustard Seed(X)
30 Then He said, (Y)“To what shall we liken the kingdom of God? Or with what parable shall we picture it? 31 It is like a mustard seed which, when it is sown on the ground, is smaller than all the seeds on earth; 32 but when it is sown, it grows up and becomes greater than all herbs, and shoots out large branches, so that the birds of the air may nest under its shade.”

33 (Z)And with many such parables He spoke the word to them as they were able to hear it. 34 But without a parable He did not speak to them. And when they were alone, (AA)He explained all things to His disciples.
Wind and Wave Obey Jesus(AB)
35 (AC)On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.” 36 Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. 38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, (AD)“Teacher, (AE)do You not care that we are perishing?”
39 Then He arose and (AF)rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, (AG)“Peace,[g] be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. 40 But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? (AH)How[h] is it that you have no faith?” 41 And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”
A Demon-Possessed Man Healed(AI)
5 Then (AJ)they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the [i]Gadarenes. 2 And when He had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an (AK)unclean spirit, 3 who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no one could bind [j]him, not even with chains, 4 because he had often been bound with shackles and chains. And the chains had been pulled apart by him, and the shackles broken in pieces; neither could anyone tame him. 5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones.
6 When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him. 7 And he cried out with a loud voice and said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I (AL)implore[k] You by God that You do not torment me.”
8 For He said to him, (AM)“Come out of the man, unclean spirit!” 9 Then He asked him, “What is your name?”
And he answered, saying, “My name is Legion; for we are many.” 10 Also he begged Him earnestly that He would not send them out of the country.
11 Now a large herd of (AN)swine was feeding there near the mountains. 12 So all the demons begged Him, saying, “Send us to the swine, that we may enter them.” 13 And [l]at once Jesus gave them permission. Then the unclean spirits went out and entered the swine (there were about two thousand); and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and drowned in the sea.
14 So those who fed the swine fled, and they told it in the city and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that had happened. 15 Then they came to Jesus, and saw the one who had been (AO)demon-possessed and had the legion, (AP)sitting and (AQ)clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. 16 And those who saw it told them how it happened to him who had been demon-possessed, and about the swine. 17 Then (AR)they began to plead with Him to depart from their region.
18 And when He got into the boat, (AS)he who had been demon-possessed begged Him that he might be with Him. 19 However, Jesus did not permit him, but said to him, “Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you.” 20 And he departed and began to (AT)proclaim in [m]Decapolis all that Jesus had done for him; and all (AU)marveled.
A Girl Restored to Life and a Woman Healed(AV)
21 (AW)Now when Jesus had crossed over again by boat to the other side, a great multitude gathered to Him; and He was by the sea. 22 (AX)And behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue came, Jairus by name. And when he saw Him, he fell at His feet 23 and begged Him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter lies at the point of death. Come and (AY)lay Your hands on her, that she may be healed, and she will live.” 24 So Jesus went with him, and a great multitude followed Him and thronged Him.
25 Now a certain woman (AZ)had a flow of blood for twelve years, 26 and had suffered many things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and (BA)touched His garment. 28 For she said, “If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well.”
29 Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the [n]affliction. 30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that (BB)power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My clothes?”
31 But His disciples said to Him, “You see the multitude thronging You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’ ”
32 And He looked around to see her who had done this thing. 33 But the woman, (BC)fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. 34 And He said to her, “Daughter, (BD)your faith has made you well. (BE)Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.”
35 (BF)While He was still speaking, some came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?”
36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not be afraid; only (BG)believe.” 37 And He permitted no one to follow Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James. 38 Then He came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and saw [o]a tumult and those who (BH)wept and wailed loudly. 39 When He came in, He said to them, “Why make this commotion and weep? The child is not dead, but (BI)sleeping.”
40 And they ridiculed Him. (BJ)But when He had put them all outside, He took the father and the mother of the child, and those who were with Him, and entered where the child was lying. 41 Then He took the child by the hand, and said to her, “Talitha, cumi,” which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” 42 Immediately the girl arose and walked, for she was twelve years of age. And they were (BK)overcome with great amazement. 43 But (BL)He commanded them strictly that no one should know it, and said that something should be given her to eat.

The Parable of the Sower(A)(B)
4 Again Jesus began to teach by the lake.(C) The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water’s edge. 2 He taught them many things by parables,(D) and in his teaching said: 3 “Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed.(E) 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times.”(F)
9 Then Jesus said, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”(G)
10 When he was alone, the Twelve and the others around him asked him about the parables. 11 He told them, “The secret of the kingdom of God(H) has been given to you. But to those on the outside(I) everything is said in parables 12 so that,
“‘they may be ever seeing but never perceiving,
and ever hearing but never understanding;
otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!’[a]”(J)
13 Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable? 14 The farmer sows the word.(K) 15 Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan(L) comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. 16 Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. 17 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 18 Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; 19 but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth(M) and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. 20 Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown.”
A Lamp on a Stand
21 He said to them, “Do you bring in a lamp to put it under a bowl or a bed? Instead, don’t you put it on its stand?(N) 22 For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open.(O) 23 If anyone has ears to hear, let them hear.”(P)
24 “Consider carefully what you hear,” he continued. “With the measure you use, it will be measured to you—and even more.(Q) 25 Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.”(R)
The Parable of the Growing Seed
26 He also said, “This is what the kingdom of God is like.(S) A man scatters seed on the ground. 27 Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. 28 All by itself the soil produces grain—first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. 29 As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come.”(T)
The Parable of the Mustard Seed(U)
30 Again he said, “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like,(V) or what parable shall we use to describe it? 31 It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. 32 Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.”
33 With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand.(W) 34 He did not say anything to them without using a parable.(X) But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.
Jesus Calms the Storm(Y)
35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat.(Z) There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”(AA)
41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
Jesus Restores a Demon-Possessed Man(AB)(AC)
5 They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.[b] 2 When Jesus got out of the boat,(AD) a man with an impure spirit(AE) came from the tombs to meet him. 3 This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. 4 For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. 5 Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.
6 When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him. 7 He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me,(AF) Jesus, Son of the Most High God?(AG) In God’s name don’t torture me!” 8 For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!”
9 Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”
“My name is Legion,”(AH) he replied, “for we are many.” 10 And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.
11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. 12 The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.” 13 He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.
14 Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. 15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion(AI) of demons,(AJ) sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 16 Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and told about the pigs as well. 17 Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.
18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. 19 Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them(AK) how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” 20 So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis[c](AL) how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.
Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman(AM)
21 When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake,(AN) a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake.(AO) 22 Then one of the synagogue leaders,(AP) named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. 23 He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on(AQ) her so that she will be healed and live.” 24 So Jesus went with him.
A large crowd followed and pressed around him. 25 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding(AR) for twelve years. 26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, 28 because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes,(AS) I will be healed.” 29 Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.(AT)
30 At once Jesus realized that power(AU) had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”
31 “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’ ”
32 But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. 33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. 34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you.(AV) Go in peace(AW) and be freed from your suffering.”
35 While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader.(AX) “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?”
36 Overhearing[d] what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”
37 He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James.(AY) 38 When they came to the home of the synagogue leader,(AZ) Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. 39 He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.”(BA) 40 But they laughed at him.
After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. 41 He took her by the hand(BB) and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”).(BC) 42 Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. 43 He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this,(BD) and told them to give her something to eat.

The Parable of the Sower
4 Again (A)he began to teach beside the sea. And a very large crowd gathered about him, (B)so that he got into a boat and sat in it on the sea, and the whole crowd was beside the sea on the land. 2 And (C)he was teaching them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them: 3 “Listen! Behold, (D)a sower went out to sow. 4 And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it. 5 Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and immediately it sprang up, since it had no depth of soil. 6 And (E)when the sun rose, it was scorched, and since it had no root, (F)it withered away. 7 Other seed fell among (G)thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain. 8 And other seeds fell into good soil and produced grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirtyfold and sixtyfold and (H)a hundredfold.” 9 And he said, (I)“He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
The Purpose of the Parables
10 And (J)when he was alone, those around him with the twelve asked him about the parables. 11 And he said to them, (K)“To you has been given (L)the secret of the kingdom of God, but for (M)those outside everything is in parables, 12 (N)so that
“‘they (O)may indeed see but not perceive,
and may indeed hear but not understand,
lest they (P)should turn and be forgiven.’”
13 (Q)And he said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables? 14 (R)The sower sows (S)the word. 15 And these are the ones along the path, where the word is sown: when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them. 16 And these are the ones sown on rocky ground: the ones who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it (T)with joy. 17 And they have no root in themselves, but (U)endure for a while; then, when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately (V)they fall away.[a] 18 And others are the ones sown among thorns. They are those who hear the word, 19 but (W)the cares of (X)the world and (Y)the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. 20 But those that were sown on the good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and (Z)bear fruit, (AA)thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.”
A Lamp Under a Basket
21 (AB)And he said to them, (AC)“Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket, or under a bed, and not on a stand? 22 (AD)For nothing is hidden except to be made manifest; nor is anything secret except to come to light. 23 (AE)If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.” 24 And he said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear: (AF)with the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and still more will be added to you. 25 (AG)For to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”
The Parable of the Seed Growing
26 And he said, (AH)“The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. 27 He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; (AI)he knows not how. 28 The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. 29 But when the grain is ripe, at once (AJ)he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”
The Parable of the Mustard Seed
30 (AK)And he said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it? 31 It is like (AL)a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth, 32 yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.”
33 (AM)With many such parables he spoke (AN)the word to them, (AO)as they were able to hear it. 34 He did not speak to them (AP)without a parable, but (AQ)privately to his own disciples he (AR)explained everything.
Jesus Calms a Storm
35 (AS)On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves (AT)were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39 And he awoke and (AU)rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and (AV)there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you (AW)so afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, (AX)“Who then is this, that even (AY)the wind and the sea obey him?”
Jesus Heals a Man with a Demon
5 (AZ)They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes.[b] 2 And when Jesus[c] had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. 3 (BA)He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, 4 for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him. 5 Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones. 6 And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and (BB)fell down before him. 7 And (BC)crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, (BD)Son of (BE)the Most High God? (BF)I adjure you by God, do not torment me.” 8 For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” 9 And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is (BG)Legion, for we are many.” 10 And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country. 11 Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, 12 and they begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.” 13 So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea.
14 The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened. 15 And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed[d] man, the one who had had (BH)the legion, sitting there, (BI)clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. 16 And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs. 17 And (BJ)they began to beg Jesus[e] to depart from their region. 18 As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him. 19 And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and (BK)tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” 20 And he went away and began to proclaim in (BL)the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled.
Jesus Heals a Woman and Jairus's Daughter
21 And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea. 22 (BM)Then came one of (BN)the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet 23 and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and (BO)lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” 24 And he went with him.
And a great crowd followed him and (BP)thronged about him. 25 And there was a woman (BQ)who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, 26 and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. 27 She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. 28 For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” 29 (BR)And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her (BS)disease. 30 And Jesus, perceiving in himself that (BT)power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” 31 And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’” 32 And he looked around to see who had done it. 33 But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. 34 And he said to her, “Daughter, (BU)your faith has made you well; (BV)go in peace, and be healed of your (BW)disease.”

But he (CF)put them all outside and took the child's father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. 41 (CG)Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, (CH)arise.” 42 And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. 43 And (CI)he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.
