Things to Come

13 (A)As He was going out of the temple, one of His disciples *said to Him, “Teacher, look! [a]What wonderful stones and [b]what wonderful buildings!” And Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? (B)Not one stone will be left upon another, which will not be torn down.”

As He was sitting on (C)the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, (D)Peter, [c]James, John, and Andrew were questioning Him privately, “Tell us, when will these things come about, and what will be the [d]sign when all these things are going to be fulfilled?” And Jesus began to say to them, “See to it that no one misleads you. Many will come in My name, saying, ‘(E)I am He!’ and they will mislead many. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; those things must take place; but that is not yet the end. For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will also be famines. These things are only the beginning of birth pains.

“But [e]be on your guard; for they will (F)hand you over to the [f]courts, and you will be flogged (G)in the synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them. 10 (H)And the gospel must first be preached to all the nations. 11 (I)And when they [g]arrest you and hand you over, do not worry beforehand about what you are to say, but say whatever is given you at that time; for you are not the ones speaking, but it is the Holy Spirit. 12 And brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and [h]have them put to death. 13 And (J)you will be hated by everyone because of My name, but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved.

14 “Now (K)when you see the (L)abomination of desolation standing where it should not be—[i]let the [j]reader understand—then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. 15 [k](M)Whoever is on the [l]housetop must not go down, nor go in to get anything out of his house. 16 And [m]whoever is in the field must not turn back to get his cloak. 17 But woe to those women who are pregnant, and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 18 Moreover, pray that it will not happen in winter. 19 For those days will be such a time of tribulation as has not occurred (N)since the beginning of the creation which God created until now, and never will again. 20 And if the Lord had not shortened those days, no [n]life would have been saved; but for the sake of the [o]elect, whom He chose, He shortened the days. 21 And then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the [p]Christ’; or, ‘Look, there He is’; do not believe it; 22 for false christs and (O)false prophets will arise, and will provide (P)signs and (Q)wonders, in order to mislead, if possible, the elect. 23 But beware; I have told you everything in advance.

The Return of Christ

24 “But in those days, after that tribulation, (R)the sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light, 25 (S)and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers that are in the heavens will be shaken. 26 And then they will see (T)the Son of Man (U)coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27 And then He will send forth the angels, and (V)will gather together His [q]elect from the four winds, (W)from the end of the earth to the end of heaven.

28 “Now learn the parable from the fig tree: as soon as its branch has become tender and sprouts its leaves, you know that summer is near. 29 So you too, when you see these things happening, [r]recognize that [s]He is near, right at the [t]door. 30 Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away. 32 (X)But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.

33 “Watch out, (Y)stay alert; for you do not know when the appointed time is. 34 (Z)It is like a man away on a journey, who upon leaving his house and [u]putting his slaves in charge, assigning to each one his task, also commanded the doorkeeper to stay alert. 35 Therefore, (AA)stay alert—for you do not know when the [v]master of the house is coming, whether in the evening, at midnight, or (AB)when the rooster crows, or (AC)in the morning— 36 so that he does not come suddenly and find you (AD)asleep. 37 What I say to you I say to all: ‘(AE)Stay alert!’”

Death Plot and Anointing

14 (AF)Now (AG)the Passover and Festival of Unleavened Bread were two days away; and the chief priests and the scribes (AH)were seeking how to arrest Him covertly and kill Him; for they were saying, “Not during the festival, otherwise there will be a riot of the people.”

(AI)While He was in (AJ)Bethany at the home of Simon [w]the Leper, He was reclining at the table, and a woman came with an alabaster vial of very (AK)expensive perfume of pure [x]nard. She broke the vial and poured the perfume over His head. But there were some indignantly remarking to one another, “Why has this perfume been wasted? For this perfume could have been sold for over three hundred [y]denarii, and the money given to the poor.” And they were scolding her. But Jesus said, “Leave her alone! Why are you bothering her? She has done a good deed for Me. For you always have (AL)the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good to them; but you do not always have Me. She has done what she could; (AM)she has anointed My body beforehand for the burial. Truly I say to you, (AN)wherever the gospel is preached in the entire world, what this woman has done will also be told in memory of her.”

10 (AO)Then Judas Iscariot, (AP)who was one of the twelve, went off to the chief priests in order to [z]betray Him to them. 11 They were delighted when they heard this, and promised to give him money. And he began seeking how to betray Him at an opportune time.

The Last Passover

12 (AQ)On the first day of [aa](AR)Unleavened Bread, when [ab]the Passover lamb was being (AS)sacrificed, His disciples *said to Him, “Where do You want us to go and prepare for You to eat the Passover?” 13 And He *sent two of His disciples and *said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you; follow him; 14 and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is My (AT)guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?”’ 15 And he himself will show you a large upstairs room furnished and ready; prepare for us there.” 16 The disciples left and came to the city, and found everything just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.

17 (AU)When it was evening He *came with the twelve. 18 And as they were reclining at the table and eating, Jesus said, “Truly I say to you that one of you will [ac]betray Me—[ad]one who is eating with Me.” 19 They began to be grieved and to say to Him one by one, “Surely not I?” 20 But He said to them, It is one of the twelve, the one who dips bread with Me in the bowl. 21 For the Son of Man is going away just as it is written about Him; but woe to that man [ae]by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good [af]for that man if he had not been born.”

The Lord’s Supper

22 (AV)While they were eating, He took some bread, and [ag]after a (AW)blessing He broke it, and gave it to them, and said, “Take it; this is My body.” 23 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 And He said to them, “This is My (AX)blood of the (AY)covenant, which is being poured out for many. 25 Truly I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine again, until that day when I drink it, new, in the kingdom of God.”

26 (AZ)And after singing a [ah]hymn, they went out to (BA)the Mount of Olives.

27 (BB)And Jesus *said to them, “You will all [ai]fall away, because it is written: ‘(BC)I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ 28 But after I am raised, (BD)I will go ahead of you to Galilee.” 29 But Peter said to Him, “Even if they all [aj]fall away, yet I will not!” 30 And Jesus *said to him, “Truly I say to you, that [ak](BE)this very night, before (BF)a rooster crows twice, you yourself will deny Me three times.” 31 But [al]Peter repeatedly said insistently, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” And they all were saying the same thing as well.

Jesus in Gethsemane

32 (BG)They *came to a place named [am]Gethsemane; and He *said to His disciples, “Sit here until I have prayed.” 33 And He *took with Him Peter, [an]James, and John, and began to be very (BH)distressed and troubled. 34 And He *said to them, (BI)My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and [ao]keep watch.” 35 And He went a little beyond them, and fell to the ground and began praying that if it were possible, (BJ)the hour might [ap]pass Him by. 36 And He was saying, (BK)Abba! [aq]Father! All things are possible for You; remove this cup from Me; (BL)yet not what I will, but what You will.” 37 And He *came and *found them sleeping, and *said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not [ar]keep watch for one hour? 38 [as](BM)Keep watching and praying, so that you will not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 39 And again He went away and prayed, saying the same [at]words. 40 And again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to say in reply to Him. 41 And He *came the third time, and *said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? That is enough. (BN)The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being [au]betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Get up, let’s go; behold, the one who is betraying Me is near!”

Betrayal and Arrest

43 (BO)And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, *came up, [av]accompanied by a crowd with swords and clubs who were from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders. 44 Now he who was betraying Him had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; arrest Him and lead Him away [aw]under guard.” 45 And after coming, Judas immediately went to Him and *said, “(BP)Rabbi!” and kissed Him. 46 And they laid hands on Him and arrested Him. 47 But one of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and [ax]cut off his ear. 48 And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me, as you would against a man inciting a revolt? 49 Every day I was with you (BQ)within the temple grounds teaching, and you did not arrest Me; but this has taken place so that the Scriptures will be fulfilled.” 50 And [ay]His disciples all left Him and fled.

51 A young man was following Him, wearing nothing but a linen sheet over his naked body; and they *seized him. 52 But he [az]pulled free of the linen sheet and escaped naked.

Jesus before His Accusers

53 (BR)They led Jesus away to the high priest; and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes *gathered together. 54 And Peter had followed Him at a distance, (BS)right into (BT)the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the [ba]officers and (BU)warming himself at the [bb]fire. 55 Now the chief priests and the entire [bc](BV)Council were trying to obtain testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, and they were not finding any. 56 For many people were giving false testimony against Him, and so their testimonies were not consistent. 57 And then some stood up and began giving false testimony against Him, saying, 58 “We heard Him say, ‘(BW)I will destroy this [bd]temple that was made by hands, and in three days I will build another, made without hands.’” 59 And not even in this respect was their testimony consistent. 60 And then the high priest stood up and came forward and questioned Jesus, saying, “Do You not offer any answer for what these men are testifying against You?” 61 (BX)But He kept silent and did not offer any answer. (BY)Again the high priest was questioning Him, and *said to Him, “Are You the [be]Christ, the Son of [bf]the Blessed One?” 62 And Jesus said, “I am; and you shall see (BZ)the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power, and (CA)coming with the clouds of heaven.” 63 (CB)Tearing his clothes, the high priest *said, “What further need do we have of witnesses? 64 You have heard the (CC)blasphemy; how does it seem to you?” And they all condemned Him as deserving of death. 65 And some began to (CD)spit on Him, and [bg](CE)to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists and say to Him, “(CF)Prophesy!” Then the officers took custody of Him [bh]and slapped Him in the face.

Peter’s Denials

66 (CG)And while Peter was below in (CH)the courtyard, one of the slave women of the high priest *came, 67 and seeing Peter (CI)warming himself, she looked at him and *said, “You were with Jesus the (CJ)Nazarene as well.” 68 But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are talking about.” And he (CK)went out onto the [bi]porch.[bj] 69 The slave woman saw him, and began once more to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them!” 70 But again (CL)he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders were again saying to Peter, “You really are one of them, (CM)for you are a Galilean as well.” 71 But he began to [bk]curse himself and to swear, “I do not know this Man of whom you speak!” 72 And immediately a rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had made the remark to him, “Before (CN)a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And [bl]he hurried on and began to weep.

Christian Order

11 (A)Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ.

Now (B)I praise you because you (C)remember me in everything and (D)hold firmly to the traditions, just as I handed them down to you. But I want you to understand that Christ is the (E)head of every man, and [a](F)the man is the head of a woman, and God is the (G)head of Christ. Every man who has something on his head while praying or (H)prophesying disgraces his head. But every (I)woman who has her head uncovered while praying or prophesying disgraces her head, for it is one and the same as the woman [b]whose head is (J)shaved. For if a woman does not cover [c]her head, have her also [d]cut her hair off; however, if it is disgraceful for a woman to [e]have her hair cut off or [f]her head shaved, have her cover [g]her head. For a man should not have his head covered, since he is the (K)image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. For (L)man [h]does not originate from woman, but woman from man; for indeed man was not created for the woman’s sake, but (M)woman for the man’s sake. 10 Therefore the woman should have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. 11 However, in the Lord, neither is woman [i]independent of man, nor is man [j]independent of woman. 12 For as the woman originated from the man, so also the man has his birth through the woman; and (N)all things originate (O)from God. 13 (P)Judge [k]for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 Does even nature itself not teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, 15 but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given to her as a covering. 16 But if anyone is inclined to be contentious, (Q)we have no [l]such practice, nor have (R)the churches of God.

17 Now in giving this next instruction (S)I do not praise you, because you come together not for the better, but for the worse. 18 For, in the first place, when you come together [m]as a church, I hear that [n](T)divisions exist among you; and in part I believe it. 19 For there also (U)have to be factions among you, (V)so that those who are approved may become [o]evident among you. 20 Therefore when you come together it is not to eat the Lord’s Supper, 21 for when you eat, each one takes his own supper first; and one goes hungry while (W)another gets drunk. 22 What! Do you not have houses in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the (X)church of God and (Y)shame those who have nothing? What am I to say to you? Shall (Z)I praise you? In this I do not praise you.

The Lord’s Supper

23 For (AA)I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that (AB)the Lord Jesus, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same way He also took (AC)the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the (AD)new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death (AE)until He comes.

27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy way, shall be (AF)guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. 28 But a person must (AG)examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For the one who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not properly recognize the [p]body. 30 For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number [q](AH)are asleep. 31 But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are (AI)disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with (AJ)the world.

33 So then, my brothers and sisters, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. 34 If anyone is (AK)hungry, have him eat (AL)at home, so that you do not come together for judgment. As to the remaining matters, I will (AM)give instructions (AN)when I come.

The Use of Spiritual Gifts

12 Now concerning (AO)spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, (AP)I do not want you to be unaware. (AQ)You know that when you were [r]pagans, you were (AR)led [s]astray to the (AS)mute idols, however you were led. Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking [t](AT)by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus is [u](AU)accursed”; and no one can say, “Jesus is (AV)Lord,” except [v](AW)by the Holy Spirit.

Now there are (AX)varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. There are varieties of effects, but the same (AY)God who works all things in all persons. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit (AZ)for the common good. For to one is given the word of (BA)wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of (BB)knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another (BC)faith [w]by the same Spirit, and to another (BD)gifts of [x]healing [y]by the one Spirit, 10 and to another the [z]effecting of [aa](BE)miracles, and to another (BF)prophecy, and to another the [ab](BG)distinguishing of spirits, to another various (BH)kinds of tongues, and to another the (BI)interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, (BJ)distributing to each one individually just as He [ac]wills.

12 For just (BK)as the body is one and yet has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though they are many, are one body, (BL)so also is Christ. 13 For [ad](BM)by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether (BN)Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to (BO)drink of one Spirit.

14 For (BP)the body is not one part, but many. 15 If the foot says, “Because I am not a hand, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason [ae]any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear says, “Because I am not an eye, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason [af]any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But now God has (BQ)arranged the parts, each one of them in the body, (BR)just as He desired. 19 If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20 But now (BS)there are many parts, but one body. 21 And the eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you”; or again, the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22 On the contrary, [ag]it is much truer that the parts of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary; 23 and those parts of the body which we [ah]consider less honorable, [ai]on these we bestow greater honor, and our less presentable parts become much more presentable, 24 whereas our more presentable parts have no need of it. But God has so composed the body, giving more abundant honor to that part which lacked, 25 so that there may be no [aj]division in the body, but that the parts may have the same care for one another. 26 And if one part of the body suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if a part is [ak]honored, all the parts rejoice with it.

27 Now you are (BT)Christ’s body, and (BU)individually parts of it. 28 And God has [al](BV)appointed in (BW)the church, first (BX)apostles, second (BY)prophets, third (BZ)teachers, then [am](CA)miracles, then (CB)gifts of healings, helps, (CC)administrations, and various (CD)kinds of tongues. 29 All are not apostles, are they? All are not prophets, are they? All are not teachers, are they? All are not workers of [an]miracles, are they? 30 All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not (CE)interpret, do they? 31 But (CF)earnestly desire the greater gifts.

And yet, I am going to show you a far better way.

The Excellence of Love

13 If I speak with the (CG)tongues of mankind and of (CH)angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a (CI)clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of (CJ)prophecy and know all (CK)mysteries and all (CL)knowledge, and if I have (CM)all faith so as to (CN)remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. And if I (CO)give away all my possessions to charity, and if I (CP)surrender my body so that I may [ao]glory, but do not have love, it does me no good.

Love (CQ)is patient, love is kind, it (CR)is not jealous; love does not brag, it is not (CS)arrogant. It does not act disgracefully, it (CT)does not seek its own benefit; it is not provoked, (CU)does not keep an account of a wrong suffered, (CV)it does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but (CW)rejoices with the truth; it [ap](CX)keeps every confidence, it believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never fails; but if there are gifts of [aq](CY)prophecy, they will be done away with; if there are (CZ)tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away with. For we (DA)know in part and prophesy in part; 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away with. 11 When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I [ar]became a man, I did away with childish things. 12 For now we (DB)see in a mirror [as]dimly, but then (DC)face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully, just as I also (DD)have been fully known. 13 But now faith, hope, and love remain, these three; but the [at]greatest of these is (DE)love.
