21 When all the people were baptized,(A) Jesus also was baptized. As he was praying,(B) heaven opened,(C) 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in a physical appearance like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well-pleased.”(D)

The Temptation of Jesus
4 Then Jesus(N) left the Jordan,(O) full of the Holy Spirit,(P) and was led by the Spirit(Q) in the wilderness 2 for forty days(R) to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over, he was hungry. 3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”
4 But Jesus answered him, “It is written: Man must not live on bread alone.”[d][e](S)
5 So he took him up[f] and showed him all the kingdoms of the world(T) in a moment of time. 6 The devil said to him, “I will give you their splendor and all this authority, because it has been given over to me,(U) and I can give it to anyone I want. 7 If you, then, will worship me,[g] all will be yours.”
8 And Jesus answered him,[h] “It is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve[i] him only.”(V)
9 So he took him to Jerusalem, had him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:
He will give his angels orders concerning you,
to protect you,[j](W) 11 and
they will support you with their hands,
so that you will not strike
your foot against a stone.”[k](X)
12 And Jesus answered him, “It is said: Do not test the Lord your God.”[l](Y)
13 After the devil had finished every temptation, he departed from him for a time.

Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness(Q)
4 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit,(R) left the Jordan(S) and was led by the Spirit(T) into the wilderness, 2 where for forty days(U) he was tempted[c] by the devil.(V) He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.
3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God,(W) tell this stone to become bread.”
4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’[d]”(X)
5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.(Y) 6 And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me,(Z) and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours.”
8 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’[e]”(AA)
9 The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:
“‘He will command his angels concerning you
to guard you carefully;
11 they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’[f]”(AB)
12 Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’[g]”(AC)
13 When the devil had finished all this tempting,(AD) he left him(AE) until an opportune time.
