10 For the priests bearing the ark stood in the midst of the Jordan until everything was finished that the Lord commanded Joshua to tell the people, according to all that Moses had commanded Joshua.

The people passed over in haste. 11 And when all the people had finished passing over, the ark of the Lord and the priests passed over before the people. 12 The sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh (A)passed over armed before the people of Israel, as Moses had told them. 13 About 40,000 ready for war passed over before the Lord for battle, to the plains of Jericho. 14 On that day the Lord (B)exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel, and they stood in awe of him just as they had stood in awe of Moses, all the days of his life.

15 And the Lord said to Joshua, 16 “Command the priests bearing (C)the ark of the testimony to come up out of the Jordan.” 17 So Joshua commanded the priests, “Come up out of the Jordan.” 18 And when the priests bearing the ark of the covenant of the Lord came up from the midst of the Jordan, and the soles of the priests' feet were lifted up on dry ground, the waters of the Jordan returned to their place and overflowed all its banks, (D)as before.

19 The people came up out of the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and they encamped at (E)Gilgal on the east border of Jericho. 20 And (F)those twelve stones, which they took out of the Jordan, Joshua set up at Gilgal. 21 And he said to the people of Israel, (G)“When your children ask their fathers in times to come, ‘What do these stones mean?’ 22 then you shall let your children know, (H)‘Israel passed over this Jordan on dry ground.’ 23 For the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan for you until you passed over, as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea, (I)which he dried up for us until we passed over, 24 (J)so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is (K)mighty, that you may (L)fear the Lord your God forever.”[a]

  1. Joshua 4:24 Or all the days

10 Now the priests who carried the ark remained standing in the middle of the Jordan until everything the Lord had commanded Joshua was done by the people, just as Moses had directed Joshua. The people hurried over, 11 and as soon as all of them had crossed, the ark of the Lord and the priests came to the other side while the people watched. 12 The men of Reuben,(A) Gad(B) and the half-tribe of Manasseh(C) crossed over, ready for battle, in front of the Israelites,(D) as Moses had directed them.(E) 13 About forty thousand armed for battle(F) crossed over(G) before the Lord to the plains of Jericho for war.

14 That day the Lord exalted(H) Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they stood in awe of him all the days of his life, just as they had stood in awe of Moses.

15 Then the Lord said to Joshua, 16 “Command the priests carrying the ark of the covenant law(I) to come up out of the Jordan.”

17 So Joshua commanded the priests, “Come up out of the Jordan.”

18 And the priests came up out of the river carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord. No sooner had they set their feet on the dry ground than the waters of the Jordan returned to their place(J) and ran at flood stage(K) as before.

19 On the tenth day of the first month the people went up from the Jordan and camped at Gilgal(L) on the eastern border of Jericho. 20 And Joshua set up at Gilgal the twelve stones(M) they had taken out of the Jordan. 21 He said to the Israelites, “In the future when your descendants ask their parents, ‘What do these stones mean?’(N) 22 tell them, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’(O) 23 For the Lord your God dried up the Jordan before you until you had crossed over. The Lord your God did to the Jordan what he had done to the Red Sea[a] when he dried it up before us until we had crossed over.(P) 24 He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know(Q) that the hand of the Lord is powerful(R) and so that you might always fear the Lord your God.(S)
