A Great Fish Swallows Jonah

^17 [a] And the Lord appointed^[b] a great fish to swallow up Jonah. ^(A)And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

⁴⁰ For ^(A)just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, ^(B)so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

^34 (A)You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, ^(B)when you are evil? ^(C)For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. ^35 (D)The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. ³⁶ I tell you, ^(E)on the day of judgment ^(F)people will give account for ^(G)every careless word they speak, ³⁷ for ^(H)by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

The Sign of Jonah

³⁸ Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, “Teacher, ^(I)we wish to see a sign from you.” ³⁹ But he answered them, ^(J)“An evil and ^(K)adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
