The People Are Divided over Jesus

⁴⁰ When some from the crowd heard these words, they said, “This really is the Prophet!”^{[a](A) 41} Others said, “This is the Messiah!” But some said, “Surely the Messiah doesn’t come from Galilee, does He? ⁴² Doesn’t the Scripture^(B) say that the Messiah comes from David’s^(C) offspring^[b] and from the town of Bethlehem,^(D) where David once lived?” ⁴³ So a division^(E) occurred among the crowd because of Him. ⁴⁴ Some of them wanted to seize Him,^(F) but no one laid hands on Him.

¹⁶ Therefore some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God,^(A) for He doesn’t keep the Sabbath!” But others were saying, “How can a sinful man^(B) perform such signs?” And there was a division^(C) among them.

¹⁹ Again a division^(A) took place among the Jews because of these words. ²⁰ Many of them were saying, “He has a demon^(B) and He’s crazy! Why do you listen to Him?” ²¹ Others were saying, “These aren’t the words of someone demon-possessed. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”^(C)
