23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching.(A) My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.(B) 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.(C)

25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate,(D) the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name,(E) will teach you all things(F) and will remind you of everything I have said to you.(G) 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.(H) I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled(I) and do not be afraid.

28 “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’(J) If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father,(K) for the Father is greater than I.(L) 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe.(M) 30 I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world(N) is coming. He has no hold over me, 31 but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me.(O)

“Come now; let us leave.

The Vine and the Branches

15 “I am(P) the true vine,(Q) and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit,(R) while every branch that does bear fruit(S) he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.(T) Remain in me, as I also remain in you.(U) No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit;(V) apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.(W) If you remain in me(X) and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.(Y) This is to my Father’s glory,(Z) that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.(AA)

“As the Father has loved me,(AB) so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands,(AC) you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.(AD) 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.(AE) 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.(AF) 14 You are my friends(AG) if you do what I command.(AH) 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.(AI) 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you(AJ) so that you might go and bear fruit(AK)—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.(AL) 17 This is my command: Love each other.(AM)

  1. John 15:2 The Greek for he prunes also means he cleans.

23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.

25 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.

26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.

29 And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe.

30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.

31 But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.

15 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.

Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.

I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.

10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

17 These things I command you, that ye love one another.
