Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 (A)“If you love me, you will (B)keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another (C)Helper,[a] to be with you forever, 17 even (D)the Spirit of truth, (E)whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and (F)will be[b] in you.

18 “I will not leave you as orphans; (G)I will come to you. 19 (H)Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but (I)you will see me. (J)Because I live, you also will live. 20 (K)In that day you will know that (L)I am in my Father, and (M)you in me, and (N)I in you. 21 (O)Whoever has my commandments and (P)keeps them, he it is who loves me. And (Q)he who loves me (R)will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and (S)manifest myself to him.” 22 (T)Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it (U)that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, (V)“If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and (W)we will come to him and (X)make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And (Y)the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me.

25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the (Z)Helper, the Holy Spirit, (AA)whom the Father will send in my name, (AB)he will teach you all things and (AC)bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 (AD)Peace I leave with you; (AE)my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. (AF)Let not your hearts be troubled, neither (AG)let them be afraid. 28 (AH)You heard me say to you, (AI)‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I (AJ)am going to the Father, for (AK)the Father is greater than I. 29 And (AL)now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, for (AM)the ruler of this world is coming. (AN)He has no claim on me, 31 but I do (AO)as the Father has commanded me, (AP)so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.

I Am the True Vine

15 “I am the (AQ)true vine, and my Father is (AR)the vinedresser. (AS)Every branch in me that does not bear fruit (AT)he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, (AU)that it may bear more fruit. Already (AV)you are clean (AW)because of the word that I have spoken to you. (AX)Abide (AY)in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; (AZ)you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that (BA)bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me (BB)he is thrown away like a branch and withers; (BC)and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If (BD)you abide in me, and my words abide in you, (BE)ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. (BF)By this my Father is glorified, that you (BG)bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. (BH)As the Father has loved me, (BI)so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 (BJ)If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as (BK)I have kept (BL)my Father's commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, (BM)that my joy may be in you, and that (BN)your joy may be full.

12 (BO)“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 (BP)Greater love has no one than this, (BQ)that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are (BR)my friends (BS)if you do what I command you. 15 (BT)No longer do I call you servants,[c] for the servant (BU)does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for (BV)all that I have heard from my Father (BW)I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but (BX)I chose you and appointed you that you should go and (BY)bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that (BZ)whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 These things I command you, (CA)so that you will love one another.

The Hatred of the World

18 (CB)“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 (CC)If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because (CD)you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you: (CE)‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, (CF)they will also persecute you. (CG)If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 “If you love me, keep my commands.(A) 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate(B) to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth.(C) The world cannot accept him,(D) because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[a] in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans;(E) I will come to you.(F) 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me.(G) Because I live, you also will live.(H) 20 On that day(I) you will realize that I am in my Father,(J) and you are in me, and I am in you.(K) 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me.(L) The one who loves me will be loved by my Father,(M) and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

22 Then Judas(N) (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”(O)

23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching.(P) My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.(Q) 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.(R)

25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate,(S) the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name,(T) will teach you all things(U) and will remind you of everything I have said to you.(V) 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.(W) I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled(X) and do not be afraid.

28 “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’(Y) If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father,(Z) for the Father is greater than I.(AA) 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe.(AB) 30 I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world(AC) is coming. He has no hold over me, 31 but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me.(AD)

“Come now; let us leave.

The Vine and the Branches

15 “I am(AE) the true vine,(AF) and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit,(AG) while every branch that does bear fruit(AH) he prunes[b] so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.(AI) Remain in me, as I also remain in you.(AJ) No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit;(AK) apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.(AL) If you remain in me(AM) and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.(AN) This is to my Father’s glory,(AO) that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.(AP)

“As the Father has loved me,(AQ) so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands,(AR) you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.(AS) 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.(AT) 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.(AU) 14 You are my friends(AV) if you do what I command.(AW) 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.(AX) 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you(AY) so that you might go and bear fruit(AZ)—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.(BA) 17 This is my command: Love each other.(BB)

The World Hates the Disciples

18 “If the world hates you,(BC) keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you(BD) out of the world. That is why the world hates you.(BE) 20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’[c](BF) If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.(BG) If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.

  3. John 15:20 John 13:16

15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.

20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?

23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.

25 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.

26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.

29 And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe.

30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.

31 But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.

15 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.

Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.

I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.

10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

17 These things I command you, that ye love one another.

18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.

19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

20 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.
