Further conflict over Jesus’ claims

22 Then came the Festival of Dedication[a] at Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was in the temple courts walking in Solomon’s Colonnade. 24 The Jews who were there gathered round him, saying, ‘How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.’

25 Jesus answered, ‘I did tell you, but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me, 26 but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all[b]; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.’

31 Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him, 32 but Jesus said to them, ‘I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?’

33 ‘We are not stoning you for any good work,’ they replied, ‘but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.’

34 Jesus answered them, ‘Is it not written in your Law, “I have said you are ‘gods’”[c]? 35 If he called them “gods”, to whom the word of God came – and Scripture cannot be set aside – 36 what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, “I am God’s Son”? 37 Do not believe me unless I do the works of my Father. 38 But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.’ 39 Again they tried to seize him, but he escaped their grasp.

40 Then Jesus went back across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptising in the early days. There he stayed, 41 and many people came to him. They said, ‘Though John never performed a sign, all that John said about this man was true.’ 42 And in that place many believed in Jesus.

Jesus is Rejected by the Jews

22 Now[a] Hanukkah[b] was taking place in Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was walking around in the Temple inside the open porch of Solomon. 24 So the Jewish leaders[c] surrounded him and quizzed him, “How long are you going to keep us in suspense? If you’re the Messiah,[d] tell us so plainly.”

25 Jesus answered them, “I have told you, but you don’t believe it. The actions that I do in my Father’s name testify on my behalf, 26 but you don’t believe, because you don’t belong to my sheep.[e] 27 My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, they’ll never be lost, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 What my Father has given me[f] is more important than anything,[g] and no one can snatch it from the Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”

31 Again the Jewish leaders[h] picked up stones to stone him to death.

32 Jesus replied to them, “I’ve shown you many good actions from my[i] Father. For which of them are you going to stone me?”

33 The Jewish leaders[j] answered him, “We are not going to stone you for a good action, but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, are making yourself God!”

34 Jesus replied to them, “Is it not written in your[k] Law, ‘I said, “You are gods”’?[l] 35 If he called those to whom a message from God came ‘gods’ (and the Scripture cannot be disregarded), 36 how can you say to the one whom the Father has consecrated and sent into the world, ‘You’re blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I’m the Son of God’? 37 If I’m not doing my Father’s actions, don’t believe me. 38 But if I’m doing them, even though you don’t believe me, believe the actions, so that you may know and understand[m] that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.”

39 Again they tried to seize him, but he slipped away from them.[n] 40 Then he went away again across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing at first, and he remained there. 41 Many people came to him and kept saying, “John never performed a sign, but everything that John said about this man is true!” 42 And many believed in Jesus[o] there.

The Shepherd Knows His Sheep

22 Now it was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem, and it was winter. 23 And Jesus walked in the temple, (A)in Solomon’s porch. 24 Then the Jews surrounded Him and said to Him, “How long do You keep us in [a]doubt? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.”

25 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. (B)The works that I do in My Father’s name, they (C)bear witness of Me. 26 But (D)you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, [b]as I said to you. 27 (E)My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29 (F)My Father, (G)who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. 30 (H)I and My Father are one.”

Renewed Efforts to Stone Jesus

31 Then (I)the Jews took up stones again to stone Him. 32 Jesus answered them, “Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?”

33 The Jews answered Him, saying, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for (J)blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, (K)make Yourself God.”

34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, (L)‘I said, “You are gods” ’? 35 If He called them gods, (M)to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture (N)cannot be broken), 36 do you say of Him (O)whom the Father sanctified and (P)sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ (Q)because I said, ‘I am (R)the Son of God’? 37 (S)If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38 but if I do, though you do not believe Me, (T)believe the works, that you may know and [c]believe (U)that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.” 39 (V)Therefore they sought again to seize Him, but He escaped out of their hand.

The Believers Beyond Jordan

40 And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place (W)where John was baptizing at first, and there He stayed. 41 Then many came to Him and said, “John performed no sign, (X)but all the things that John spoke about this Man were true.” 42 And many believed in Him there.
