Jeruzalem door Nebukadnezar veroverd
39 In de tiende maand van het negende regeringsjaar van koning Zedekia van Juda kwam koning Nebukadnezar met zijn hele leger terug naar Jeruzalem om de stad te belegeren. 2 Anderhalf jaar later, in de vierde maand, sloegen zij een bres in de stadsmuur en veroverden de stad. 3 De Babylonische legeraanvoerders trokken in triomf de stad binnen en namen plaats bij de Middenpoort. Daar zaten ze: hofmaarschalk Nebusazban en opperbevelhebber Nergalsarézer en alle overige leiders.
4 Toen koning Zedekia en zijn strijders hen zagen en begrepen dat de stad verloren was, vluchtten zij ʼs nachts door de poort tussen de twee muren aan de achterkant van de paleistuin over de velden in de richting van het Jordaandal. 5 Maar de Babyloniërs gingen de vluchtelingen achterna en haalden ze in op de vlakten van Jericho, waar zij de koning gevangennamen en naar koning Nebukadnezar brachten. Deze was in Ribla, in het land van Hamath. Daar sprak hij zijn vonnis over de koning uit. 6 De koning van Babel dwong Zedekia toe te kijken terwijl zijn kinderen en de vooraanstaande burgers van Juda werden gedood. 7 Daarna stak hij Zedekia de ogen uit, boeide hem met ijzeren ketens en zond hem naar Babel. 8 Intussen stak het leger het paleis en de huizen in brand en haalde de muren van Jeruzalem omver. 9 Daarna deporteerden Nebuzaradan, het hoofd van de lijfwacht, en zijn mannen de rest van de bevolking en de overlopers naar Babel. 10 Maar Nebuzaradan liet enkele van de armsten in het land achter en gaf hun akkers en wijngaarden.
11,12 Nebukadnezar had Nebuzaradan ook bevolen Jeremia op te zoeken. ‘Zorg ervoor dat hem niets overkomt,’ zei hij. ‘Zorg goed voor hem en geef hem alles wat hij wil.’ 13 Zo voerden Nebuzaradan, het hoofd van de lijfwacht, hofmaarschalk Nebusazban, opperbevelhebber Nergalsarézer en alle ondergeschikten het bevel van de koning uit. 14 Zij stuurden soldaten naar de gevangenis om Jeremia eruit te halen en stelden hem onder de hoede van Gedalja, de zoon van Ahikam en kleinzoon van Safan, die hem moest terugbrengen naar zijn huis. Zo bleef Jeremia bij de mensen die in het land waren achtergebleven.
15 Voordat de Babyloniërs kwamen, toen Jeremia nog in de gevangenis zat, had de Here hem de volgende boodschap gegeven: 16 ‘Geef deze boodschap door aan de Ethiopiër Ebed-Melech: de Here van de hemelse legers, de God van Israël, zegt: Ik zal al mijn dreigementen tegen deze stad uitvoeren. Met eigen ogen zult u daarvan getuige zijn. 17 Maar u zal Ik redden. U zult niet worden gedood door de mensen voor wie u zo bang bent. 18 Als beloning voor uw vertrouwen in Mij zult u niet gedood worden. Ik zal uw leven redden en u in veiligheid brengen.’
Jeremia kiest voor Juda
40 Nebuzaradan nam Jeremia mee naar Rama, nadat hij hem geboeid had aangetroffen tussen de ballingen uit Jeruzalem en Juda die naar Babel zouden worden gevoerd. In Rama liet hij hem vrij. 2,3 Toen hij hem had gevonden, riep hij Jeremia bij zich en zei: ‘De Here, uw God, heeft deze ramp over dit land gebracht, precies zoals Hij had gezegd. Want deze mensen hebben tegen de Here gezondigd. Daarom is dit gebeurd. 4 Maar u zal ik vrijuit laten gaan. Als u met mij mee wilt naar Babel, vind ik dat ook goed, ik zal ervoor zorgen dat u dan goed wordt behandeld. Maar als u niet mee wilt, hoeft het niet. Het hele land ligt voor u open, u kunt gaan waar u wilt. 5 Als u besluit te blijven, ga dan terug naar Gedalja die door de koning van Babel is benoemd tot gouverneur van Juda en sluit u aan bij het overgebleven volk dat hij regeert. U moet zelf beslissen, u mag doen wat u wilt.’ Toen gaf Nebuzaradan Jeremia wat voedsel en geld en liet hem gaan. 6 Jeremia ging terug naar Gedalja in Mispa en bleef bij de mensen die in het land waren achtergebleven.
7 Toen de leiders van het verzet hoorden dat de koning van Babel Gedalja tot gouverneur over de armen van het land had benoemd en dat hij niet iedereen had verbannen, 8 zochten zij Gedalja op in zijn hoofdkwartier in Mispa. Dit zijn de namen van de leiders die daar kwamen: Ismaël, de zoon van Nethanja; Johanan en Jonathan, de zonen van Karéah; Seraja, de zoon van Tanchumeth; de zonen van Efai, de Netofathiet, en Jezanja, de zoon van de Maächathiet. Zij hadden hun soldaten bij zich. 9 Gedalja trachtte hen ervan te overtuigen dat het niet gevaarlijk was zich aan de Babyloniërs over te geven. ‘Blijf hier en dien de koning van Babel,’ zei hij, ‘en het zal u goed gaan. 10 Wat mijzelf betreft, ik zal in Mispa blijven als uw vertegenwoordiger bij de Babyloniërs, als zij hier komen om mijn beleid te controleren. Vestig u ergens in een stad en leef van de opbrengsten van het land. Oogst de druiven, het zomerfruit en de olijven en sla die op.’
11 Toen de Judeeërs in Moab, Ammon en Edom en de andere naburige landen hoorden dat een kleine groep mensen in Juda was achtergebleven en dat de koning van Babel hen niet allemaal had weggevoerd en dat Gedalja tot gouverneur was benoemd, 12 kwamen zij terug naar Juda. Zij gingen eerst naar Mispa om met Gedalja over hun plannen te praten en trokken daarna verder naar de verlaten boerderijen, waar zij grote oogsten wijndruiven en zomerfruit binnenhaalden.
13,14 Maar korte tijd later kwamen Johanan, de zoon van Karéah, en de andere verzetsmensen naar Mispa om Gedalja te vertellen dat koning Baälis van Ammon, Ismaël, de zoon van Nethanja, had gestuurd om hem te vermoorden. Maar Gedalja wilde hen niet geloven. 15 Toen sprak Johanan onder vier ogen met Gedalja en bood aan Ismaël in het geheim te doden. ‘Waarom zouden wij hem hier laten komen en het risico nemen dat hij u vermoordt?’ vroeg Johanan. ‘Wat zal er dan gebeuren met de Judeeërs die zijn teruggekomen? Waarom zou dit restant uiteengejaagd moeten worden? Dat zou hun ondergang betekenen.’ 16 Maar Gedalja zei: ‘Ik verbied u zoiets te doen, want wat u over Ismaël vertelt, is niet waar.’
De dood van Gedalja
41 Maar in de zevende maand kwam Ismaël naar Mispa. Hij was de zoon van Nethanja en kleinzoon van Elisama, lid van de koninklijke familie en een van de hoogste functionarissen van de koning. Hij had tien mannen bij zich. 2 Tijdens de maaltijd sprongen Ismaël en zijn tien mannen plotseling op, trokken hun zwaarden en vermoordden Gedalja. 3 Daarna gingen zij naar buiten en richtten een slachting aan onder de andere Judeeërs en de Babylonische soldaten die daar waren.
4 De volgende dag, nog voordat iemand buiten Mispa wist wat daar was gebeurd, 5 kwamen tachtig mannen uit Sichem, Silo en Samaria in Jeruzalem aan. Zij kwamen om de Here in zijn tempel te aanbidden. Zij hadden hun baard afgeschoren, hun kleren gescheurd en zichzelf gesneden en hadden offers en reukwerk bij zich. 6 Ismaël ging hen vanuit Mispa tegemoet en huilde. Toen hij vlakbij was, zei hij: ‘Kom toch mee en kijk wat er met Gedalja is gebeurd!’ 7 Toen de mannen echter in de stad aankwamen, doodden Ismaël en zijn mannen zeventig van hen en gooiden de lijken in een put. 8 De tien overige mannen wisten hun leven te redden door Ismaël te beloven dat hij hun rijke voorraden tarwe, gerst, olie en honing, die zij ergens in het open veld hadden verstopt, zou krijgen. 9 De put waarin Ismaël de lijken van de vermoorde mannen gooide, was de grote put die koning Asa gemaakt had toen hij Mispa versterkte om zich te beschermen tegen koning Baësa van Israël. 10 Ismaël nam de dochters van de koning gevangen, evenals al de mensen die Nebuzaradan onder de hoede van Gedalja in Mispa had achtergelaten. Korte tijd later vertrok hij met hen allen naar het land van de Ammonieten.
11 Maar toen Johanan, de zoon van Karéah, en de andere verzetsmensen hoorden wat Ismaël had gedaan, 12 gingen zij hem met al hun manschappen achterna om tegen hem te vechten. De twee groepen ontmoetten elkaar bij het meer van Gibeon. 13,14 Toen de gevangenen van Ismaël Johanan en zijn mannen zagen aankomen, schreeuwden zij van vreugde en sloten zich direct bij hen aan. 15 Ismaël ontsnapte ondertussen met acht van zijn mannen naar het land van de Ammonieten.
16,17 Daarop gingen Johanan en zijn mannen naar het dorp Geruth-Kimham, dichtbij Bethlehem. Zij namen alle bevrijde mensen met zich mee, soldaten, vrouwen, kinderen en regeringsfunctionarissen. Ze gingen met hen naar Egypte, 18 want zij waren bang voor wat de Babyloniërs zouden doen als die hoorden dat Ismaël gouverneur Gedalja had vermoord. Deze was tenslotte persoonlijk benoemd door de koning van Babel.

39 1 In the ninth year of Zedekiah(A) king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar(B) king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem with his whole army and laid siege(C) to it. 2 And on the ninth day of the fourth(D) month of Zedekiah’s eleventh year, the city wall(E) was broken through.(F) 3 Then all the officials(G) of the king of Babylon came and took seats in the Middle Gate: Nergal-Sharezer of Samgar, Nebo-Sarsekim a chief officer, Nergal-Sharezer a high official and all the other officials of the king of Babylon. 4 When Zedekiah king of Judah and all the soldiers saw them, they fled; they left the city at night by way of the king’s garden, through the gate between the two walls,(H) and headed toward the Arabah.[a](I)
5 But the Babylonian[b] army pursued them and overtook Zedekiah(J) in the plains of Jericho. They captured(K) him and took him to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon at Riblah(L) in the land of Hamath, where he pronounced sentence on him. 6 There at Riblah the king of Babylon slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes and also killed all the nobles(M) of Judah. 7 Then he put out Zedekiah’s eyes(N) and bound him with bronze shackles to take him to Babylon.(O)
8 The Babylonians[c] set fire(P) to the royal palace and the houses of the people and broke down the walls(Q) of Jerusalem. 9 Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard carried into exile to Babylon the people who remained in the city, along with those who had gone over to him,(R) and the rest of the people.(S) 10 But Nebuzaradan the commander of the guard left behind in the land of Judah some of the poor people, who owned nothing; and at that time he gave them vineyards and fields.
11 Now Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had given these orders about Jeremiah through Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard: 12 “Take him and look after him; don’t harm(T) him but do for him whatever he asks.” 13 So Nebuzaradan the commander of the guard, Nebushazban a chief officer, Nergal-Sharezer a high official and all the other officers(U) of the king of Babylon 14 sent and had Jeremiah taken out of the courtyard of the guard.(V) They turned him over to Gedaliah(W) son of Ahikam,(X) the son of Shaphan,(Y) to take him back to his home. So he remained among his own people.(Z)
15 While Jeremiah had been confined in the courtyard of the guard, the word of the Lord came to him: 16 “Go and tell Ebed-Melek(AA) the Cushite, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: I am about to fulfill my words(AB) against this city—words concerning disaster,(AC) not prosperity. At that time they will be fulfilled before your eyes. 17 But I will rescue(AD) you on that day, declares the Lord; you will not be given into the hands of those you fear. 18 I will save(AE) you; you will not fall by the sword(AF) but will escape with your life,(AG) because you trust(AH) in me, declares the Lord.’”

40 The word came to Jeremiah from the Lord after Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard had released him at Ramah.(AI) He had found Jeremiah bound in chains among all the captives(AJ) from Jerusalem and Judah who were being carried into exile to Babylon. 2 When the commander(AK) of the guard found Jeremiah, he said to him, “The Lord your God decreed(AL) this disaster(AM) for this place.(AN) 3 And now the Lord has brought it about; he has done just as he said he would. All this happened because you people sinned(AO) against the Lord and did not obey(AP) him. 4 But today I am freeing(AQ) you from the chains(AR) on your wrists. Come with me to Babylon, if you like, and I will look after you; but if you do not want to, then don’t come. Look, the whole country lies before you; go wherever you please.”(AS) 5 However, before Jeremiah turned to go,[d] Nebuzaradan added, “Go back to Gedaliah(AT) son of Ahikam,(AU) the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed(AV) over the towns(AW) of Judah, and live with him among the people, or go anywhere else you please.”(AX)
Then the commander gave him provisions and a present(AY) and let him go. 6 So Jeremiah went to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah(AZ) and stayed with him among the people who were left behind in the land.
Gedaliah Assassinated(BA)
7 When all the army officers and their men who were still in the open country heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam as governor(BB) over the land and had put him in charge of the men, women and children who were the poorest(BC) in the land and who had not been carried into exile to Babylon, 8 they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah(BD)—Ishmael(BE) son of Nethaniah, Johanan(BF) and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite,(BG) and Jaazaniah[e] the son of the Maakathite,(BH) and their men. 9 Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, took an oath to reassure them and their men. “Do not be afraid to serve(BI) the Babylonians,[f](BJ)” he said. “Settle down in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well with you.(BK) 10 I myself will stay at Mizpah(BL) to represent you before the Babylonians who come to us, but you are to harvest the wine,(BM) summer fruit and olive oil, and put them in your storage jars,(BN) and live in the towns you have taken over.”(BO)
11 When all the Jews in Moab,(BP) Ammon, Edom(BQ) and all the other countries(BR) heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant in Judah and had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, as governor over them, 12 they all came back to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at Mizpah, from all the countries where they had been scattered.(BS) And they harvested an abundance of wine and summer fruit.
13 Johanan(BT) son of Kareah and all the army officers still in the open country came to Gedaliah at Mizpah(BU) 14 and said to him, “Don’t you know that Baalis king of the Ammonites(BV) has sent Ishmael(BW) son of Nethaniah to take your life?” But Gedaliah son of Ahikam did not believe them.
15 Then Johanan(BX) son of Kareah said privately to Gedaliah in Mizpah, “Let me go and kill(BY) Ishmael son of Nethaniah, and no one will know it. Why should he take your life and cause all the Jews who are gathered around you to be scattered(BZ) and the remnant(CA) of Judah to perish?”
16 But Gedaliah son of Ahikam said to Johanan(CB) son of Kareah, “Don’t do such a thing! What you are saying about Ishmael is not true.”
41 In the seventh month Ishmael(CC) son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, who was of royal blood and had been one of the king’s officers, came with ten men to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah. While they were eating together there, 2 Ishmael(CD) son of Nethaniah and the ten men who were with him got up and struck down Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, with the sword,(CE) killing the one whom the king of Babylon had appointed(CF) as governor over the land.(CG) 3 Ishmael also killed all the men of Judah who were with Gedaliah at Mizpah, as well as the Babylonian[g] soldiers who were there.
4 The day after Gedaliah’s assassination, before anyone knew about it, 5 eighty men who had shaved off their beards,(CH) torn their clothes(CI) and cut(CJ) themselves came from Shechem,(CK) Shiloh(CL) and Samaria,(CM) bringing grain offerings and incense(CN) with them to the house of the Lord.(CO) 6 Ishmael son of Nethaniah went out from Mizpah to meet them, weeping(CP) as he went. When he met them, he said, “Come to Gedaliah son of Ahikam.”(CQ) 7 When they went into the city, Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the men who were with him slaughtered them and threw them into a cistern.(CR) 8 But ten of them said to Ishmael, “Don’t kill us! We have wheat and barley, olive oil and honey, hidden in a field.”(CS) So he let them alone and did not kill them with the others. 9 Now the cistern where he threw all the bodies of the men he had killed along with Gedaliah was the one King Asa(CT) had made as part of his defense(CU) against Baasha(CV) king of Israel. Ishmael son of Nethaniah filled it with the dead.
10 Ishmael made captives of all the rest of the people(CW) who were in Mizpah—the king’s daughters(CX) along with all the others who were left there, over whom Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam. Ishmael son of Nethaniah took them captive and set out to cross over to the Ammonites.(CY)
11 When Johanan(CZ) son of Kareah and all the army officers who were with him heard about all the crimes Ishmael son of Nethaniah had committed, 12 they took all their men and went to fight(DA) Ishmael son of Nethaniah. They caught up with him near the great pool(DB) in Gibeon. 13 When all the people(DC) Ishmael had with him saw Johanan son of Kareah and the army officers who were with him, they were glad. 14 All the people Ishmael had taken captive at Mizpah(DD) turned and went over to Johanan son of Kareah. 15 But Ishmael son of Nethaniah and eight of his men escaped(DE) from Johanan and fled to the Ammonites.
Flight to Egypt
16 Then Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers(DF) who were with him led away all the people of Mizpah who had survived,(DG) whom Johanan had recovered from Ishmael son of Nethaniah after Ishmael had assassinated Gedaliah son of Ahikam—the soldiers, women, children and court officials he had recovered from Gibeon. 17 And they went on, stopping at Geruth Kimham(DH) near Bethlehem(DI) on their way to Egypt(DJ) 18 to escape the Babylonians.[h] They were afraid(DK) of them because Ishmael son of Nethaniah had killed Gedaliah(DL) son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed as governor over the land.

1 Van: Paulus, die van God de opdracht heeft gekregen overal de belofte bekend te maken dat er door het geloof in Jezus Christus eeuwig leven is. 2 Aan: Timotheüs, van wie ik houd als van mijn eigen kind. Ik wens je de genade, het medeleven en de vrede toe van God, de Vader, en van Jezus Christus, onze Here.
3 Net als mijn voorouders dien ik God met een zuiver geweten. Ik dank Hem ervoor dat ik dag en nacht voor jou kan bidden. 4 Wat zou ik het fijn vinden je weer eens te zien! Wat zou dat mij gelukkig maken! Want ik herinner mij je tranen, toen wij afscheid van elkaar namen. 5 Ik weet hoe je op de Here vertrouwde, net als je moeder Eunike en je grootmoeder Loïs, ik ben ervan overtuigd dat je geloof niet verzwakt is. 6 Daarom dring ik erop aan dat je de gave van God, die je ontving toen ik je de handen oplegde, zult ontwikkelen. 7 Want God geeft ons niet een lafhartige geest, maar een sterke geest vol liefde en bedachtzaamheid.
8 Wees nooit bang om anderen over onze Heer te vertellen of ervoor uit te komen dat je mijn vriend bent, hoewel ik ter wille van Christus in de gevangenis zit. Je moet bereid zijn met mij voor de Here te lijden, Hij zal je de kracht ervoor geven. 9 God heeft ons bevrijd en voor zijn heilig werk uitgekozen, niet omdat wij dat verdienen, maar omdat Hij dat vanaf het allereerste begin al van plan was. In Jezus Christus wilde Hij ons zijn liefde en genade laten zien. 10 En nu heeft Hij ons dit allemaal duidelijk gemaakt door de komst van onze redder, Jezus Christus, die de macht van de dood gebroken heeft en ons heeft laten zien hoe wij, door op Hem te vertrouwen, eeuwig leven kunnen krijgen.
11 God heeft mij aangesteld als apostel en leraar om zijn boodschap te verkondigen. 12 Daarom zit ik hier in de gevangenis en ik schaam mij er beslist niet voor, want ik weet op wie ik vertrouw. Ik ben er zeker van dat Hij alles wat Hij mij heeft toevertrouwd, veilig zal bewaren tot de dag waarop Hij terugkomt. 13 Houd vast aan de waarheden die ik je geleerd heb, de waarheden over het geloof en de liefde die Christus Jezus geeft. 14 Waak over de schat die de Heilige Geest die in ons woont, ons heeft gegeven.
15 Je weet dat alle christenen die vanuit Asia hier zijn gekomen, mij in de steek hebben gelaten, zelfs Fygelus en Hermogenes. 16 Ik vraag de Here of Hij Onesiforus en zijn gezin wil zegenen, omdat die mij vaak heeft bezocht om mij moed in te spreken. Zijn bezoeken waren voor mij een verfrissing, hij schaamde zich er niet voor met een gevangene bevriend te zijn. 17 Integendeel: toen hij in Rome aankwam, heeft hij overal naar mij gezocht en mij ten slotte gevonden. 18 Ik bid dat de Here hem een bijzondere zegen geeft op de grote dag waarop Christus terugkeert. En jij, Timotheüs, weet maar al te goed hoe hij mij in Efeze heeft geholpen.

Thanksgiving
3 I thank God,(G) whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience,(H) as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers.(I) 4 Recalling your tears,(J) I long to see you,(K) so that I may be filled with joy. 5 I am reminded of your sincere faith,(L) which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice(M) and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.
Appeal for Loyalty to Paul and the Gospel
6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.(N) 7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid,(O) but gives us power,(P) love and self-discipline. 8 So do not be ashamed(Q) of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner.(R) Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel,(S) by the power of God. 9 He has saved(T) us and called(U) us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done(V) but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, 10 but it has now been revealed(W) through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus,(X) who has destroyed death(Y) and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 11 And of this gospel(Z) I was appointed(AA) a herald and an apostle and a teacher.(AB) 12 That is why I am suffering as I am. 90 Deze psalm is een gebed van Mozes, de vriend van God.
Here,
van generatie op generatie
hebben wij onze hulp en kracht bij U gezocht.
2 Al voordat U de bergen schiep,
was U God.
Voordat U de aarde schiep,
was U God.
Vanuit de eeuwigheid van oudsher
tot in de eeuwigheid in de verre toekomst,
bent U God.
3 U laat de mens sterven
en vergaan tot stof.
U zegt:
‘Word weer stof, mensenkinderen.’
4 Duizend jaar
betekenen niets voor U,
zij zijn voor U
als wat een dag is voor ons,
voor U zijn ze
in een oogwenk voorbij.
5 Jaren gaan aan U voorbij
als een kort moment van insluimeren
bij het ontwaken ʼs morgens,
als gras dat snel groeit.
6 ʼs Morgens groeit en bloeit het nog
en ʼs avonds verdort het alweer.
7 Precies zo vergaat het ons
als uw toorn over ons komt.
Deze vernietigt ons.
8 U ziet onze zonden scherp voor U.
Onze meest verborgen zonden
komen bij U aan het licht.
9 Zo eindigt ons leven
onder uw boosheid.
De jaren van ons leven
gaan als een zucht voorbij.
10 Onze gemiddelde leeftijd
is zeventig jaar.
Alleen de zeer sterke mensen
worden tachtig jaar.
Alles waarop wij trots waren,
blijkt toch alleen maar moeite en verdriet
met zich mee te brengen.
Het leven vliegt voorbij
en voor we het weten
zijn we gestorven.
11 Wie kent de kracht van uw toorn
en de omvang van uw ergernis?
12 O God, leer ons zo te leven
dat wij ons uiteindelijk
de wijsheid eigen maken.
13 Kom toch terug, Here!
Hoe lang moet het nog duren?
Heb toch medelijden met uw dienaren.
14 Laat ons ʼs morgens vroeg al
uw goedheid en liefde mogen ervaren,
dan zullen wij juichen
en elke dag met blijdschap beleven.
15 Geef ons blijdschap naar de mate
waarin wij moeite en verdriet hebben gekend.
Zovele jaren waren vol zorg en verdrukking.
16 Laat uw dienaren uw werken zien,
ik bid dat hun kinderen
uw majesteit mogen aanschouwen.
17 Here, onze God,
stort uw liefdevolle vriendelijkheid over ons uit.
Zegen het werk dat wij doen.
Ja, wij bidden U om uw zegen
over alles wat wij ondernemen.
91 Wie schuilt bij God, de Allerhoogste,
kan rustig slapen,
want de Almachtige beschermt hem.
2 Ik getuig daarvan en zeg tegen de Here:
U bent mijn toevlucht,
bij U ben ik veilig en geborgen.
U bent mijn God
en ik vertrouw alleen op U.
3 Hij beschermt u tegen verraderlijke vallen
en houdt vreselijke ziekten ver van u.
4 Onder zijn vleugels vindt u
bescherming en een toevluchtsoord.
Zijn trouw is uw schild
en weert de aanvallen van de tegenstander.
5 U hoeft niet te vrezen
voor de angsten van de nacht,
noch voor de scherpe aanvallen overdag.
6 En ook niet voor de pest,
die zich in de duisternis verspreidt
of voor de vernietiging
die in de middag toeslaat.
7 Al sneuvelen duizend mensen aan uw linkerkant
of tienduizend rechts van u,
u wordt gered.
8 U zult het zelf zien,
de straf treft alleen de ongelovigen.
9 U, Here, bent mijn toevluchtsoord.
U hebt God, de Allerhoogste,
als beschermer gekozen.
10 Tegenslag zal u niet treffen
en ziekten zullen ver van u blijven.
11 Hij zal zijn engelen bevelen
voor u te zorgen en u te beschermen,
waar u ook gaat.
12 Zij zullen u op handen dragen
en u zult niet struikelen.
13 Zelfs als u een leeuw tegenkomt
of op een adder trapt,
gebeurt er niets.
14 De Here zegt:
Ik zal hem verlossen,
omdat hij zoveel van Mij houdt.
Ik zal hem beschermen,
omdat hij Mij kent en mijn naam eert.
15 Als hij Mij roept,
zal Ik hem antwoord geven.
Als hij het moeilijk heeft,
zal Ik bij hem zijn.
Ik zal hem bevrijden
en in ere herstellen.
16 Ik zal hem een lang leven geven
en hem mijn grootheid tonen.

Psalm 90
A prayer of Moses the man of God.
1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place(A)
throughout all generations.
2 Before the mountains were born(B)
or you brought forth the whole world,
from everlasting to everlasting(C) you are God.(D)
3 You turn people back to dust,
saying, “Return to dust, you mortals.”(E)
4 A thousand years in your sight
are like a day that has just gone by,
or like a watch in the night.(F)
5 Yet you sweep people away(G) in the sleep of death—
they are like the new grass of the morning:
6 In the morning it springs up new,
but by evening it is dry and withered.(H)
7 We are consumed by your anger
and terrified by your indignation.
8 You have set our iniquities before you,
our secret sins(I) in the light of your presence.(J)
9 All our days pass away under your wrath;
we finish our years with a moan.(K)
10 Our days may come to seventy years,(L)
or eighty,(M) if our strength endures;
yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow,(N)
for they quickly pass, and we fly away.(O)
11 If only we knew the power of your anger!
Your wrath(P) is as great as the fear that is your due.(Q)
12 Teach us to number our days,(R)
that we may gain a heart of wisdom.(S)
13 Relent, Lord! How long(T) will it be?
Have compassion on your servants.(U)
14 Satisfy(V) us in the morning with your unfailing love,(W)
that we may sing for joy(X) and be glad all our days.(Y)
15 Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us,
for as many years as we have seen trouble.
16 May your deeds be shown to your servants,
your splendor to their children.(Z)
17 May the favor[a] of the Lord our God rest on us;
establish the work of our hands for us—

Psalm 91
1 Whoever dwells in the shelter(AB) of the Most High
will rest in the shadow(AC) of the Almighty.[b]
2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge(AD) and my fortress,(AE)
my God, in whom I trust.”
3 Surely he will save you
from the fowler’s snare(AF)
and from the deadly pestilence.(AG)
4 He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;(AH)
his faithfulness will be your shield(AI) and rampart.
5 You will not fear(AJ) the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday.
7 A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
8 You will only observe with your eyes
and see the punishment of the wicked.(AK)
9 If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”
and you make the Most High your dwelling,
10 no harm(AL) will overtake you,
no disaster will come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels(AM) concerning you
to guard you in all your ways;(AN)
12 they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.(AO)
13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra;
