Hananiah’s Falsehood and Doom

28 And ^(A)it happened in the same year, at the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the ^(B)fourth year and in the fifth month, that Hananiah the son of ^(C)Azur the prophet, who was from Gibeon, spoke to me in the house of the Lord in the presence of the priests and of all the people, saying, ²“Thus speaks the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, saying: ‘I have broken ^(D)the yoke of the king of Babylon. ³^(E)Within two full years I will bring back to this place all the vessels of the Lord’s house, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon ^(F)took away from this place and carried to Babylon. ⁴And I will bring back to this place ^[a]Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, with all the captives of Judah who went to Babylon,’ says the Lord, ‘for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.’ ”

⁵Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and in the presence of all the people who stood in the house of the Lord, ⁶and the prophet Jeremiah said, ^(G)“Amen! The Lord do so; the Lord perform your words which you have prophesied, to bring back the vessels of the Lord’s house and all who were carried away captive, from Babylon to this place. ⁷Nevertheless hear now this word that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people: ⁸The prophets who have been before me and before you of old prophesied against many countries and great kingdoms—of war and disaster and pestilence. ⁹As for ^(H)the prophet who prophesies of ^(I)peace, when the word of the prophet comes to pass, the prophet will be known as one whom the Lord has truly sent.”

¹⁰Then Hananiah the prophet took the ^(J)yoke off the prophet Jeremiah’s neck and broke it. ¹¹And Hananiah spoke in the presence of all the people, saying, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Even so I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon ^(K)from the neck of all nations within the space of two full years.’ ” And the prophet Jeremiah went his way.

¹²Now the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, after Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke from the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, saying, ¹³“Go and tell Hananiah, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord: “You have broken the yokes of wood, but you have made in their place yokes of iron.” ¹⁴For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: ^(L)“I have put a yoke of iron on the neck of all these nations, that they may serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; and they shall serve him. ^(M)I have given him the beasts of the field also.” ’ ”

¹⁵Then the prophet Jeremiah said to Hananiah the prophet, “Hear now, Hananiah, the Lord has not sent you, but ^(N)you make this people trust in a ^(O)lie. ¹⁶Therefore thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, I will cast you from the face of the earth. This year you shall ^(P)die, because you have taught ^(Q)rebellion against the Lord.’ ”

¹⁷So Hananiah the prophet died the same year in the seventh month.

Jeremiah’s Letter to the Captives

29 Now these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem to the remainder of the elders who were ^(R)carried away captive—to the priests, the prophets, and all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon. ²(This happened after ^(S)Jeconiah^[b] the king, the ^(T)queen mother, the ^[c]eunuchs, the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, the craftsmen, and the smiths had departed from Jerusalem.) ³The letter was sent by the hand of Elasah the son of ^(U)Shaphan, and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent to Babylon, to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, saying,

⁴Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, to all who were carried away captive, whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem to Babylon:

⁵Build houses and dwell in them; plant gardens and eat their fruit. ⁶Take wives and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons and give your daughters to husbands, so that they may bear sons and daughters—that you may be increased there, and not diminished. ⁷And seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, ^(V)and pray to the Lord for it; for in its peace you will have peace. ⁸For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Do not let your prophets and your diviners who are in your midst ^(W)deceive you, nor listen to your dreams which you cause to be dreamed. ⁹For they prophesy ^(X)falsely to you in My name; I have not sent them, says the Lord.

¹⁰For thus says the Lord: After ^(Y)seventy years are completed at Babylon, I will visit you and perform My good word toward you, and cause you to ^(Z)return to this place. ¹¹For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. ¹²Then you will ^(AA)call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will ^(AB)listen to you. ¹³And ^(AC)you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me ^(AD)with all your heart. ¹⁴^(AE)I will be found by you, says the Lord, and I will bring you back from your captivity; ^(AF)I will gather you from all the nations and from all the places where I have driven you, says the Lord, and I will bring you to the place from which I cause you to be carried away captive.

¹⁵Because you have said, “The Lord has raised up prophets for us in Babylon”— ¹⁶^(AG)therefore thus says the Lord concerning the king who sits on the throne of David, concerning all the people who dwell in this city, and concerning your brethren who have not gone out with you into captivity— ¹⁷thus says the Lord of hosts: Behold, I will send on them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them like ^(AH)rotten figs that cannot be eaten, they are so bad. ¹⁸And I will pursue them with the sword, with famine, and with pestilence; and I ^(AI)will deliver them to trouble among all the kingdoms of the earth—to be ^(AJ)a curse, an astonishment, a hissing, and a reproach among all the nations where I have driven them, ¹⁹because they have not heeded My words, says the Lord, which ^(AK)I sent to them by My servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them; neither would you heed, says the Lord. ²⁰Therefore hear the word of the Lord, all you of the captivity, whom I have sent from Jerusalem to Babylon.

²¹Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, concerning Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, who prophesy a ^(AL)lie to you in My name: Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he shall slay them before your eyes. ²²^(AM)And because of them a curse shall be taken up by all the captivity of Judah who are in Babylon, saying, “The Lord make you like Zedekiah and Ahab, ^(AN)whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire”; ²³because ^(AO)they have done disgraceful things in Israel, have committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives, and have spoken lying words in My name, which I have not commanded them. Indeed I ^(AP)know, and am a witness, says the Lord.

²⁴You shall also speak to Shemaiah the Nehelamite, saying, ²⁵Thus speaks the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, saying: You have sent letters in your name to all the people who are at Jerusalem, ^(AQ)to Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, and to all the priests, saying, ²⁶“The Lord has made you priest instead of Jehoiada the priest, so that there should be ^(AR)officers in the house of the Lord over every man who is ^(AS)demented and considers himself a prophet, that you should ^(AT)put him in prison and in the stocks. ²⁷Now therefore, why have you not rebuked Jeremiah of Anathoth who makes himself a prophet to you? ²⁸For he has sent to us in Babylon, saying, ‘This captivity is long; build houses and dwell in them, and plant gardens and eat their fruit.’ ”

²⁹Now Zephaniah the priest read this letter in the hearing of Jeremiah the prophet. ³⁰Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying: ³¹Send to all those in captivity, saying, Thus says the Lord concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite: Because Shemaiah has prophesied to you, ^(AU)and I have not sent him, and he has caused you to trust in a ^(AV)lie— ³²therefore thus says the Lord: Behold, I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his ^[d]family: he shall not have anyone to dwell among this people, nor shall he see the good that I will do for My people, says the Lord, ^(AW)because he has taught rebellion against the Lord.

Restoration of Israel and Judah

30 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying, ²“Thus speaks the Lord God of Israel, saying: ‘Write in a book for yourself all the words that I have spoken to you. ³For behold, the days are coming,’ says the Lord, ‘that ^(AX)I will bring back from captivity My people Israel and Judah,’ says the Lord. ^(AY)‘And I will cause them to return to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it.’ ”

⁴Now these are the words that the Lord spoke concerning Israel and Judah.

⁵“For thus says the Lord:

‘We have heard a voice of trembling,
Of ^[e]fear, and not of peace.
⁶Ask now, and see,
Whether a ^[f]man is ever in ^[g]labor with child?
So why do I see every man with his hands on his loins
^(AZ)Like a woman in labor,
And all faces turned pale?
⁷^(BA)Alas! For that day is great,
^(BB)So that none is like it;
And it is the time of Jacob’s trouble,
But he shall be saved out of it.

⁸‘For it shall come to pass in that day,’
Says the Lord of hosts,
‘That I will break his yoke from your neck,
And will burst your bonds;
Foreigners shall no more enslave them.
⁹But they shall serve the Lord their God,
And ^(BC)David their king,
Whom I will ^(BD)raise up for them.

¹⁰‘Therefore ^(BE)do not fear, O My servant Jacob,’ says the Lord,
‘Nor be dismayed, O Israel;
For behold, I will save you from afar,
And your seed ^(BF)from the land of their captivity.
Jacob shall return, have rest and be quiet,
And no one shall make him afraid.
¹¹For I am with ^(BG)you,’ says the Lord, ‘to save you;
^(BH)Though I make a full end of all nations where I have scattered you,
^(BI)Yet I will not make a complete end of you.
But I will correct you ^(BJ)in justice,
And will not let you go altogether unpunished.’

¹²“For thus says the Lord:

^(BK)‘Your affliction is incurable,
Your wound is severe.
¹³There is no one to plead your cause,
That you may be bound up;
^(BL)You have no healing medicines.
¹⁴^(BM)All your lovers have forgotten you;
They do not seek you;
For I have wounded you with the wound ^(BN)of an enemy,
With the chastisement ^(BO)of a cruel one,
For the multitude of your iniquities,
^(BP)Because your sins have increased.
¹⁵Why ^(BQ)do you cry about your affliction?
Your sorrow is incurable.
Because of the multitude of your iniquities,
Because your sins have increased,
I have done these things to you.

¹⁶‘Therefore all those who devour you ^(BR)shall be devoured;
And all your adversaries, every one of them, shall go into ^(BS)captivity;
Those who plunder you shall become ^(BT)plunder,
And all who prey upon you I will make a ^(BU)prey.
¹⁷^(BV)For I will restore health to you
And heal you of your wounds,’ says the Lord,
‘Because they called you an outcast saying:
“This is Zion;
No one seeks her.” ’

¹⁸“Thus says the Lord:

‘Behold, I will bring back the captivity of Jacob’s tents,
And ^(BW)have mercy on his dwelling places;
The city shall be built upon its own ^[h]mound,
And the palace shall remain according to its own plan.
¹⁹Then ^(BX)out of them shall proceed thanksgiving
And the voice of those who make merry;
^(BY)I will multiply them, and they shall not diminish;
I will also glorify them, and they shall not be small.
²⁰Their children also shall be ^(BZ)as before,
And their congregation shall be established before Me;
And I will punish all who oppress them.
²¹Their nobles shall be from among them,
^(CA)And their governor shall come from their midst;
Then I will ^(CB)cause him to draw near,
And he shall approach Me;
For who is this who pledged his heart to approach Me?’ says the Lord.
²²‘You shall be ^(CC)My people,
And I will be your God.’ ”

²³Behold, the ^(CD)whirlwind of the Lord
Goes forth with fury,
A ^[i]continuing whirlwind;
It will fall violently on the head of the wicked.
²⁴The fierce anger of the Lord will not return until He has done it,
And until He has performed the intents of His heart.

^(CE)In the latter days you will consider it.

The Remnant of Israel Saved

31 “At ^(CF)the same time,” says the Lord, ^(CG)“I will be the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall be My people.”

²Thus says the Lord:

“The people who survived the sword
Found grace in the wilderness—
Israel, when ^(CH)I went to give him rest.”

³The Lord has appeared ^[j]of old to me, saying:
“Yes, ^(CI)I have loved you with ^(CJ)an everlasting love;
Therefore with lovingkindness I have ^(CK)drawn you.
⁴Again ^(CL)I will build you, and you shall be rebuilt,
O virgin of Israel!
You shall again be adorned with your ^(CM)tambourines,
And shall go forth in the dances of those who rejoice.
⁵^(CN)You shall yet plant vines on the mountains of Samaria;
The planters shall plant and ^[k]eat them as ordinary food.
⁶For there shall be a day
When the watchmen will cry on Mount Ephraim,
^(CO)‘Arise, and let us go up to Zion,
To the Lord our God.’ ”

⁷For thus says the Lord:

^(CP)“Sing with gladness for Jacob,
And shout among the chief of the nations;
Proclaim, give praise, and say,
‘O Lord, save Your people,
The remnant of Israel!’
⁸Behold, I will bring them ^(CQ)from the north country,
And ^(CR)gather them from the ends of the earth,
Among them the blind and the lame,
The woman with child
And the one who labors with child, together;
A great throng shall return there.
⁹^(CS)They shall come with weeping,
And with supplications I will lead them.
I will cause them to walk ^(CT)by the rivers of waters,
In a straight way in which they shall not stumble;
For I am a Father to Israel,
And Ephraim is My ^(CU)firstborn.

¹⁰“Hear the word of the Lord, O nations,
And declare it in the ^[l]isles afar off, and say,
‘He who scattered Israel ^(CV)will gather him,
And keep him as a shepherd does his flock.’
¹¹For ^(CW)the Lord has redeemed Jacob,
And ransomed him ^(CX)from the hand of one stronger than he.
¹²Therefore they shall come and sing in ^(CY)the height of Zion,
Streaming to ^(CZ)the goodness of the Lord—
For wheat and new wine and oil,
For the young of the flock and the herd;
Their souls shall be like a ^(DA)well-watered garden,
^(DB)And they shall sorrow no more at all.

¹³“Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance,
And the young men and the old, together;
For I will turn their mourning to joy,
Will comfort them,
And make them rejoice rather than sorrow.
¹⁴I will ^[m]satiate the soul of the priests with abundance,
And My people shall be satisfied with My goodness, says the Lord.”

Mercy on Ephraim

¹⁵Thus says the Lord:

^(DC)“A voice was heard in ^(DD)Ramah,
Lamentation and bitter ^(DE)weeping,
Rachel weeping for her children,
Refusing to be comforted for her children,
Because ^(DF)they are no more.”

¹⁶Thus says the Lord:

“Refrain your voice from ^(DG)weeping,
And your eyes from tears;
For your work shall be rewarded, says the Lord,
And they shall come back from the land of the enemy.
¹⁷There is ^(DH)hope in your future, says the Lord,
That your children shall come back to their own border.

¹⁸“I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself:
‘You have ^(DI)chastised me, and I was chastised,
Like an untrained bull;
^(DJ)Restore me, and I will return,
For You are the Lord my God.
¹⁹Surely, ^(DK)after my turning, I repented;
And after I was instructed, I struck myself on the thigh;
I was ^(DL)ashamed, yes, even humiliated,
Because I bore the reproach of my youth.’
²⁰Is Ephraim My dear son?
Is he a pleasant child?
For though I spoke against him,
I earnestly remember him still;
^(DM)Therefore My ^[n]heart yearns for him;
^(DN)I will surely have mercy on him, says the Lord.

²¹“Set up signposts,
Make landmarks;
^(DO)Set your heart toward the highway,
The way in which you went.
^[o]Turn back, O virgin of Israel,
Turn back to these your cities.
²²How long will you ^(DP)gad about,
O you ^(DQ)backsliding daughter?
For the Lord has created a new thing in the earth—
A woman shall encompass a man.”

Future Prosperity of Judah

²³Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “They shall again use this speech in the land of Judah and in its cities, when I bring back their captivity: ^(DR)‘The Lord bless you, O home of justice, and ^(DS)mountain of holiness!’ ²⁴And there shall dwell in Judah itself, and ^(DT)in all its cities together, farmers and those going out with flocks. ²⁵For I have ^[p]satiated the weary soul, and I have replenished every sorrowful soul.”

²⁶After this I awoke and looked around, and my sleep was ^(DU)sweet to me.

²⁷“Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, that ^(DV)I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man and the seed of beast. ²⁸And it shall come to pass, that as I have ^(DW)watched over them ^(DX)to pluck up, to break down, to throw down, to destroy, and to afflict, so I will watch over them ^(DY)to build and to plant, says the Lord. ²⁹^(DZ)In those days they shall say no more:

‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes,
And the children’s teeth are set on edge.’

³⁰^(EA)But every one shall die for his own iniquity; every man who eats the sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge.

A New Covenant

³¹“Behold, the ^(EB)days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— ³²not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that ^(EC)I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, ^[q]though I was a husband to them, says the Lord. ³³^(ED)But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: ^(EE)I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their ^[r]hearts; ^(EF)and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. ³⁴No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for ^(EG)they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For ^(EH)I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”

³⁵Thus says the Lord,
^(EI)Who gives the sun for a light by day,
The ordinances of the moon and the stars for a light by night,
Who disturbs ^(EJ)the sea,
And its waves roar
^(EK)(The Lord of hosts is His name):

³⁶“If ^(EL)those ordinances depart
From before Me, says the Lord,
Then the seed of Israel shall also cease
From being a nation before Me forever.”

³⁷Thus says the Lord:

^(EM)“If heaven above can be measured,
And the foundations of the earth searched out beneath,
I will also ^(EN)cast off all the seed of Israel
For all that they have done, says the Lord.

³⁸“Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, that the city shall be built for the Lord ^(EO)from the Tower of Hananel to the Corner Gate. ³⁹^(EP)The surveyor’s line shall again extend straight forward over the hill Gareb; then it shall turn toward Goath. ⁴⁰And the whole valley of the dead bodies and of the ashes, and all the fields as far as the Brook Kidron, ^(EQ)to the corner of the Horse Gate toward the east, ^(ER)shall be holy to the Lord. It shall not be plucked up or thrown down anymore forever.”

Hebrews 2

Do Not Neglect Salvation

2 Therefore we must give ^[a]the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. ²For if the word ^(A)spoken through angels proved steadfast, and ^(B)every transgression and disobedience received a just ^[b]reward, ³^(C)how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, ^(D)which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was ^(E)confirmed to us by those who heard Him, ⁴^(F)God also bearing witness ^(G)both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and ^(H)gifts^[c] of the Holy Spirit, ^(I)according to His own will?

The Son Made Lower than Angels^(J)

⁵For He has not put ^(K)the world to come, of which we speak, in subjection to angels. ⁶But one testified in a certain place, saying:

^(L)“What is man that You are mindful of him,
Or the son of man that You take care of him?
⁷You have made him ^[d]a little lower than the angels;
You have crowned him with glory and honor,
^[e]And set him over the works of Your hands.
⁸^(M)You have put all things in subjection under his feet.”

For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now ^(N)we do not yet see all things put under him. ⁹But we see Jesus, ^(O)who was made ^[f]a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death ^(P)crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death ^(Q)for everyone.

Bringing Many Sons to Glory

¹⁰For it was fitting for Him, ^(R)for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation ^(S)perfect through sufferings. ¹¹For ^(T)both He who ^[g]sanctifies and those who are being sanctified ^(U)are all of one, for which reason ^(V)He is not ashamed to call them brethren, ¹²saying:

^(W)“I will declare Your name to My brethren;
In the midst of the assembly I will sing praise to You.”

¹³And again:

^(X)“I will put My trust in Him.”

And again:

^(Y)“Here am I and the children whom God has given Me.”

¹⁴Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He ^(Z)Himself likewise shared in the same, ^(AA)that through death He might destroy him who had the power of ^(AB)death, that is, the devil, ¹⁵and release those who ^(AC)through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. ¹⁶For indeed He does not ^[h]give aid to angels, but He does ^[i]give aid to the seed of Abraham. ¹⁷Therefore, in all things He had ^(AD)to be made like His brethren, that He might be ^(AE)a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. ¹⁸^(AF)For in that He Himself has suffered, being ^[j]tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.
