God’s Day of Vengeance and Redemption

63 Who is this coming from Edom,(A)
    from Bozrah,(B) with his garments stained crimson?(C)
Who is this, robed in splendor,
    striding forward in the greatness of his strength?(D)

“It is I, proclaiming victory,
    mighty to save.”(E)

Why are your garments red,
    like those of one treading the winepress?(F)

“I have trodden the winepress(G) alone;
    from the nations no one was with me.
I trampled(H) them in my anger
    and trod them down in my wrath;(I)
their blood spattered my garments,(J)
    and I stained all my clothing.
It was for me the day of vengeance;(K)
    the year for me to redeem had come.
I looked, but there was no one(L) to help,
    I was appalled that no one gave support;
so my own arm(M) achieved salvation for me,
    and my own wrath sustained me.(N)
I trampled(O) the nations in my anger;
    in my wrath I made them drunk(P)
    and poured their blood(Q) on the ground.”

There I will put them on trial(C)
    for what they did to my inheritance, my people Israel,
because they scattered(D) my people among the nations
    and divided up my land.

Footnotes

  1. Joel 3:2 Jehoshaphat means the Lord judges; also in verse 12.

12 “Let the nations be roused;
    let them advance into the Valley of Jehoshaphat,(A)
for there I will sit
    to judge(B) all the nations on every side.
13 Swing the sickle,(C)
    for the harvest(D) is ripe.
Come, trample the grapes,(E)
    for the winepress(F) is full
    and the vats overflow—
so great is their wickedness!”

14 Multitudes,(G) multitudes
    in the valley(H) of decision!
For the day of the Lord(I) is near
    in the valley of decision.(J)
15 The sun and moon will be darkened,
    and the stars no longer shine.(K)
16 The Lord will roar(L) from Zion
    and thunder from Jerusalem;(M)
    the earth and the heavens will tremble.(N)
But the Lord will be a refuge(O) for his people,
    a stronghold(P) for the people of Israel.
