Isaiah 9:17-20

New American Standard Bible

¹⁷Therefore the Lord does ^(A)not rejoice over their young men,
^(B)Nor does He have compassion on their ^[a]orphans or their widows;
For every one of them is ^(C)godless and an ^(D)evildoer,
And every ^(E)mouth is speaking foolishness.
^(F)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away,
And His hand is still stretched out.

¹⁸^(G)For wickedness burns like a fire;
It consumes briars and thorns;
It also sets the thickets of the forest aflame
And they roll upward in a column of smoke.
¹⁹By the ^(H)wrath of the Lord of armies the ^(I)land is burned,
And the ^(J)people are like fuel for the fire;
No ^(K)one spares his brother.
²⁰^[b]They devour what is on the right hand but are still ^(L)hungry,
And ^[c]they eat what is on the left hand, but they are not satisfied;
Each of them eats the ^(M)flesh of his own arm.

¹⁷Therefore the Lord will take no pleasure in the young men,^(A)
nor will he pity^(B) the fatherless and widows,
for everyone is ungodly^(C) and wicked,^(D)
every mouth speaks folly.^(E)

Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,
his hand is still upraised.^(F)

¹⁸Surely wickedness burns like a fire;^(G)
    it consumes briers and thorns,^(H)
it sets the forest thickets ablaze,^(I)
    so that it rolls upward in a column of smoke.
¹⁹By the wrath^(J) of the Lord Almighty
    the land will be scorched^(K)
and the people will be fuel for the fire;^(L)
    they will not spare one another.^(M)
²⁰On the right they will devour,
    but still be hungry;^(N)
on the left they will eat,^(O)
    but not be satisfied.
