Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a burning coal in his hand, which he had taken from the (A)altar with tongs. He (B)touched my mouth with it and said, “Behold, this has touched your lips; and (C)your guilt is taken away and atonement is made for your sin.”

Isaiah’s Commission

Then I heard the (D)voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then (E)I said, “Here am I. Send me!” And He said, “Go, and tell this people:

‘Keep on (F)listening, but do not understand;
And keep on looking, but do not gain knowledge.’
10 (G)Make the hearts of this people [a](H)insensitive,
Their ears [b]dull,
And their eyes [c]blind,
(I)So that they will not see with their eyes,
Hear with their ears,
Understand with their hearts,
And return and be healed.”

  1. Isaiah 6:10 Hebrew; Septuagint ‘You will be ever hearing, but never understanding; / you will be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’ / 10 This people’s heart has become calloused; / they hardly hear with their ears, / and they have closed their eyes

Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar:

And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.

Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.

And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.

10 Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.
