Isaiah 58
King James Version
58 Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.
2 Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God.
3 Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours.
4 Behold, ye fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high.
5 Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the Lord?
6 Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?
7 Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?
8 Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy reward.
9 Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity;
10 And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noon day:
11 And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.
12 And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.
13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:
14 Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

Observances of Fasts
58 “Cry aloud, do not hold back;
Lift up your voice like a trumpet,
And declare to My people their transgression
And to the house of Jacob their sins.

“Yet they seek Me day by day and delight [superficially] to know My ways,
As [if they were in reality] a nation that has done righteousness
And has not abandoned (turned away from) the ordinance of their God.
They ask of Me righteous judgments,
They delight in the nearness of God.
3
‘Why have we fasted,’ they say, ‘and You do not see it?
Why have we humbled ourselves and You do not notice?’
Hear this [O Israel], on the day of your fast [when you should be grieving for your sins] you find something you desire [to do],
And you force your hired servants to work [instead of stopping all work, as the law teaches].(A)

“The facts are that you fast only for strife and brawling and to strike with the fist of wickedness.
You do not fast as you do today to make your voice heard on high.
5
“Is a fast such as this what I have chosen, a day for a man to humble himself [with sorrow in his soul]?
Is it only to bow down his head like a reed
And to make sackcloth and ashes as a bed [pretending to have a repentant heart]?
Do you call this a fast and a day pleasing to the Lord?

“[Rather] is this not the fast which I choose,
To undo the bonds of wickedness,
To tear to pieces the ropes of the yoke,
To let the oppressed go free
And break apart every [enslaving] yoke?(B)

“Is it not to divide your bread with the hungry
And bring the homeless poor into the house;
When you see the naked, that you cover him,
And not to hide yourself from [the needs of] your own flesh and blood?
8
“Then your light will break out like the dawn,
And your healing (restoration, new life) will quickly spring forth;
Your righteousness will go before you [leading you to peace and prosperity],
The glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.(C)

“Then you will call, and the Lord will answer;
You will cry for help, and He will say, ‘Here I am.’
If you take away from your midst the yoke [of oppression],
The finger pointed in scorn [toward the oppressed or the godly], and [every form of] wicked (sinful, unjust) speech,(D)

And if you offer yourself to [assist] the hungry
And satisfy the [a]need of the afflicted,
Then your light will rise in darkness
And your gloom will become like midday.
11
“And the Lord will continually guide you,
And satisfy your soul in scorched and dry places,
And give strength to your bones;
And you will be like a watered garden,
And like a spring of water whose waters do not fail.
12
“And your people will rebuild the ancient ruins;
You will raise up and restore the age-old foundations [of buildings that have been laid waste];
You will be called Repairer of the Breach,
Restorer of Streets [b]with Dwellings.
Keeping the Sabbath
13
“If you turn back your foot from [[c]unnecessary travel on] the Sabbath,
From doing your own pleasure on My holy day,
And call the Sabbath a [spiritual] delight, and the holy day of the Lord honorable,
And honor it, not going your own way
Or [d]engaging in your own pleasure
Or speaking your own [idle] words,

Then you will take pleasure in the Lord,
And I will make you ride on the high places of the earth,
And I will feed you with the [promised] heritage of Jacob your father;
For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”(E)

- Isaiah 58:13 The ancient rabbis established strict limits for travel on the Sabbath, excepting unintentional violations and religious errands. This verse became a rabbinic proof text to rule on whether a person who had put one foot beyond the Sabbath limit for his city could reenter the city. But the Hebrew text may not refer to travel at all; turn back your foot from the Sabbath can be interpreted as an idiom referring to keeping oneself from violating the Sabbath in other ways.

58 «Clama a voz en cuello(A), no te detengas.
Alza tu voz como trompeta,
Declara a Mi pueblo su transgresión
Y a la casa de Jacob sus pecados(B).
2 Con todo me buscan día tras día y se deleitan en conocer Mis caminos(C),
Como nación que hubiera hecho justicia(D),
Y no hubiera abandonado la ley de su Dios(E).
Me piden juicios justos,
Se deleitan en la cercanía de Dios(F).
3 Dicen: “¿Por qué hemos ayunado(G), y Tú no lo ves?
¿Por qué nos hemos humillado, y Tú no haces caso[a]?”.
Pero en el día de su ayuno buscan su conveniencia(H)
Y oprimen a todos sus trabajadores.
4 Ayunan para discusiones y riñas,
Y para herir con un puño malvado(I).
No ayunen como hoy,
Para que se oiga en lo alto su voz(J).
5 ¿Es ese el ayuno que Yo escogí para que un día se humille el hombre?
¿Es acaso para que incline su cabeza como un junco,
Y para que se acueste[b] en cilicio y ceniza(K)?
¿Llamarán a esto ayuno y día acepto al Señor(L)?
6 ¿No es este el ayuno que Yo escogí:
Desatar las ligaduras de impiedad(M),
Soltar las coyundas del yugo,
Dejar ir libres a los oprimidos(N),
Y romper[c] todo yugo(O)?
7 ¿No es para que compartas tu pan con[d] el hambriento(P),
Y recibas en casa a los pobres sin hogar(Q);
Para que cuando veas al desnudo lo cubras(R),
Y no te escondas de tu semejante[e](S)?
8 Entonces tu luz despuntará como la aurora(T),
Y tu recuperación brotará con rapidez(U).
Delante de ti irá tu justicia(V);
Y la gloria del Señor será tu retaguardia(W).
9 Entonces invocarás, y el Señor responderá(X);
Clamarás, y Él dirá: “Aquí estoy”.
Si quitas de en medio de ti el yugo(Y),
El amenazar con[f] el dedo(Z) y el hablar iniquidad(AA),
10 Y si te ofreces[g] a ayudar al hambriento,
Y sacias el deseo[h] del afligido(AB),
Entonces surgirá tu luz en las tinieblas,
Y tu oscuridad será como el mediodía(AC).
11 El Señor te guiará continuamente(AD),
Saciará tu deseo[i](AE) en los lugares áridos
Y dará vigor a tus huesos(AF).
Serás como huerto regado(AG)
Y como manantial cuyas aguas nunca faltan[j](AH).
12 Los tuyos reedificarán las ruinas antiguas(AI).
Tú levantarás los cimientos de generaciones pasadas(AJ),
Y te llamarán reparador de brechas(AK),
Restaurador de calles[k] donde habitar.
13 »Si por causa del día de reposo(AL) apartas tu pie
Para no hacer lo que te plazca en Mi día santo,
Y llamas al día de reposo delicia, al día santo del Señor(AM), honorable,
Y lo honras, no siguiendo tus caminos(AN),
Ni buscando tu placer,
Ni hablando de tus propios asuntos(AO),
14 Entonces te deleitarás en el Señor(AP),
Y Yo te haré cabalgar sobre las alturas de la tierra(AQ),
