Ko ta ratou whakarite kingi ehara i te mea naku, ko ta ratou whakarite rangatira ehara i te mea i mohiotia e ahau: kua hanga e ratou ta ratou hiriwa, ko ta ratou koura hei whakapakoko ma ratou, he mea e hatepea ai ratou.

Kua horomia a Iharaira: kua rite ratou inaianei i roto i nga tauiwi ki te oko kihai i manakohia.

Kua riro hoki ratou ki Ahiria, ano he kaihe mohoao, he moke, ko ia anake: kua utua e Eparaima etahi hei whaiaipo.

12 Ahakoa tuhituhia e ahau mana taku ture kia tekau mano nga tikanga, kei te kiia aua mea he mea rere ke.

Kua tae mai nga ra o te tirotiro, kua tae mai nga ra whakautu; ka mohio a Iharaira: he wairangi te poropiti, he haurangi te tangata i te wairua, he nui hoki no tou kino, he nui no te mauahara.

11 Tena ko Eparaima, ka rere a manu atu to ratou kororia: kahore he mea e whanau, kahore he tamaiti i te kopu, a kahore he haputanga.

12 Ahakoa whakatupu noa ratou i a ratou tamariki, ka kore i ahau, a kore iho he tangata e mahue: ina, aue te mate mo ratou ua mahue ratou i ahau!

Kua wehe rua o ratou ngakau, akuanei ka kitea to ratou he: ka wahia e ia a ratou aata, ka pahuatia a ratou whakapakoko.

11  I a Iharaira e tamariki ana i aroha ahau ki a ia i reira, a karangatia ana e ahau taku tama i Ihipa.

Me pehea koe ka hoatu whakarere ai e ahau, e Eparaima, me pehea ka tukua ai koe e ahau, e Iharaira? Me pehea ka meinga ai koe e ahau kia rite ki Arema? me pehea ka waiho ai koe kia rite ki Tepoimi? kua puta ke toku ngakau i roto i ahau, ngiha tah i ano oku konohinohitanga.

10 Ka whaia e ratou a Ihowa, a ka hamama ia ano he raiona: ka hamama hoki ia, a ka haere wiri mai nga tamariki i te hauauru.

11 Ka rere wiri mai ratou i Ihipa ano he manu, i te whenua o Ahiria ano he kukupa: ka whakanohoia ano hoki ratou e ahau ki o ratou whare, e ai ta Ihowa.

I roto i te kopu i hopukia e ia tona tuakana ki te rekereke; a i a ia ka tangata i kaha ia ki te Atua;

Ae ra, i kaha ia ki te anahera, a taea ana e ia: i tangi ia, i inoi ki a ia: i tutaki ia ki a ia ki Peteere, a korero ana ia ki a tatou i reira;

I mea ano a Eparaima, He pono kua whai taonga ahau, kua kitea e ahau he rawa moku: i aku mahi katoa e kore e kitea e ratou he kino, ara he hara ki ahau.

Na ko Ihowa ahau, ko tou Atua, no te whenua o Ihipa mai ra ano; tenei ake ka meinga ano koe e ahau kia noho teneti; kia pera me to nga ra o te hakari nui.

10 Kua korero ano ahau ki nga poropiti, a kua whakamahangia e ahau nga whakakitenga; na te mahi minita a nga poropiti i korero ai ahau i nga kupu whakarite.

11 Ko te hara ranei a Kireara? ina, he mea teka kau ratou; e patu kau ana ratou ki Kirikara hei whakahere: ae ra, he rite a ratou aata ki nga puranga i nga moa o nga mara.

12 I rere ano a Hakopa ki te mara a Arame, a mahi ana a Iharaira hei utu wahine; hei utu wahine i tiaki hipi ai ia.

13 I kawea mai ano e Ihowa, ara e te poropiti, a Iharaira i Ihipa, na te poropiti ano ia i ora ai.

14 I whakapataritari a Eparaima ki a ia, kawa rawa: mo reira ka waiho e ia tona toto i runga i a ia, ka meinga ano tona ingoa kino e tona ariki kia hoki atu ki a ia.

13  I te korerotanga a Eparaima, tera te tuiri; i whakanui ake ia i a ia i roto i a Iharaira: engari, kei tona henga i roto i a Paara, ka mate ia.

Na inaianei kua neke ake to ratou hara, kua hanga e ratou ta ratou hiriwa hei whakapakoko whakarewa ma ratou, hei whakapakoko e rite ana ki ta ratou i matau ai, a ko taua mea katoa he mahi na nga kaimahi: e korerotia ana aua mea e ratou, Me kihi e nga tangata e mea patunga tapu ana, nga kuao kau.

11 Kua hoatu e ahau he kingi ki a koe i ahau e riri ana, a kua tangohia atu ia e ahau i ahau e aritarita ana.

12 Ko te he o Eparaima, takai rawa; ko tona hara, rongoa rawa.

14  Hoki mai, e Iharaira, ki a Ihowa, ki tou Atua: kua taka hoki koe i tou he.

Tikina etahi kupu ma koutou, tahuri mai hoki ki a Ihowa: mea atu ki a ia, Whakakahoretia katoatia atu te he, kia manako mai ki te mea pai: a ka hoatu e matou ano he puru te whakahere, ara o matou ngutu.

E kore matou e ora i a Ahuru; e kore matou e eke hoiho, a heoi ano a matou kianga atu ki te mahi a o matou ringa, Ko koutou o matou atua: e arohaina ana hoki te pani e koe.

Ka rongoatia e ahau to ratou tahuri ke, ka aroha ahau ki a ratou, he mea utukore: no te mea kua tahuri toku riri i a ia.

Ka kitea ki ahau he hua mou.

Ko wai te mea whakaaro nui hei matau ki enei mea? ko wai te mea tupato e mohiotia ai? tika tonu hoki nga ara a Ihowa, a ka haere te hunga tika i reira, ka taka ia te hunga he i reira.

Israel to Reap the Whirlwind

“Put the trumpet(A) to your lips!
    An eagle(B) is over the house of the Lord
because the people have broken my covenant(C)
    and rebelled against my law.(D)
Israel cries out to me,
    ‘Our God, we acknowledge you!’
But Israel has rejected what is good;
    an enemy will pursue him.(E)
They set up kings without my consent;
    they choose princes without my approval.(F)
With their silver and gold
    they make idols(G) for themselves
    to their own destruction.
Samaria, throw out your calf-idol!(H)
    My anger burns against them.
How long will they be incapable of purity?(I)
    They are from Israel!
This calf—a metalworker has made it;
    it is not God.(J)
It will be broken in pieces,
    that calf(K) of Samaria.(L)

“They sow the wind
    and reap the whirlwind.(M)
The stalk has no head;
    it will produce no flour.(N)
Were it to yield grain,
    foreigners would swallow it up.(O)
Israel is swallowed up;(P)
    now she is among the nations
    like something no one wants.(Q)
For they have gone up to Assyria(R)
    like a wild donkey(S) wandering alone.
    Ephraim has sold herself to lovers.(T)
10 Although they have sold themselves among the nations,
    I will now gather them together.(U)
They will begin to waste away(V)
    under the oppression of the mighty king.

11 “Though Ephraim built many altars for sin offerings,
    these have become altars for sinning.(W)
12 I wrote for them the many things of my law,
    but they regarded them as something foreign.(X)
13 Though they offer sacrifices as gifts to me,
    and though they eat(Y) the meat,
    the Lord is not pleased with them.(Z)
Now he will remember(AA) their wickedness
    and punish their sins:(AB)
    They will return to Egypt.(AC)
14 Israel has forgotten(AD) their Maker(AE)
    and built palaces;
    Judah has fortified many towns.
But I will send fire on their cities
    that will consume their fortresses.”(AF)

Punishment for Israel

Do not rejoice, Israel;
    do not be jubilant(AG) like the other nations.
For you have been unfaithful(AH) to your God;
    you love the wages of a prostitute(AI)
    at every threshing floor.
Threshing floors and winepresses will not feed the people;
    the new wine(AJ) will fail them.
They will not remain(AK) in the Lord’s land;
    Ephraim will return to Egypt(AL)
    and eat unclean food in Assyria.(AM)
They will not pour out wine offerings(AN) to the Lord,
    nor will their sacrifices please(AO) him.
Such sacrifices will be to them like the bread of mourners;(AP)
    all who eat them will be unclean.(AQ)
This food will be for themselves;
    it will not come into the temple of the Lord.(AR)

What will you do(AS) on the day of your appointed festivals,(AT)
    on the feast days of the Lord?
Even if they escape from destruction,
    Egypt will gather them,(AU)
    and Memphis(AV) will bury them.(AW)
Their treasures of silver(AX) will be taken over by briers,
    and thorns(AY) will overrun their tents.
The days of punishment(AZ) are coming,
    the days of reckoning(BA) are at hand.
    Let Israel know this.
Because your sins(BB) are so many
    and your hostility so great,
the prophet is considered a fool,(BC)
    the inspired person a maniac.(BD)
The prophet, along with my God,
    is the watchman over Ephraim,[a]
yet snares(BE) await him on all his paths,
    and hostility in the house of his God.(BF)
They have sunk deep into corruption,(BG)
    as in the days of Gibeah.(BH)
God will remember(BI) their wickedness
    and punish them for their sins.(BJ)

10 “When I found Israel,
    it was like finding grapes in the desert;
when I saw your ancestors,
    it was like seeing the early fruit(BK) on the fig(BL) tree.
But when they came to Baal Peor,(BM)
    they consecrated themselves to that shameful idol(BN)
    and became as vile as the thing they loved.
11 Ephraim’s glory(BO) will fly away like a bird(BP)
    no birth, no pregnancy, no conception.(BQ)
12 Even if they rear children,
    I will bereave(BR) them of every one.
Woe(BS) to them
    when I turn away from them!(BT)
13 I have seen Ephraim,(BU) like Tyre,
    planted in a pleasant place.(BV)
But Ephraim will bring out
    their children to the slayer.”(BW)

14 Give them, Lord
    what will you give them?
Give them wombs that miscarry
    and breasts that are dry.(BX)

15 “Because of all their wickedness in Gilgal,(BY)
    I hated them there.
Because of their sinful deeds,(BZ)
    I will drive them out of my house.
I will no longer love them;(CA)
    all their leaders are rebellious.(CB)
16 Ephraim(CC) is blighted,
    their root is withered,
    they yield no fruit.(CD)
Even if they bear children,
    I will slay(CE) their cherished offspring.”

17 My God will reject(CF) them
    because they have not obeyed(CG) him;
    they will be wanderers among the nations.(CH)

10 Israel was a spreading vine;(CI)
    he brought forth fruit for himself.
As his fruit increased,
    he built more altars;(CJ)
as his land prospered,(CK)
    he adorned his sacred stones.(CL)
Their heart is deceitful,(CM)
    and now they must bear their guilt.(CN)
The Lord will demolish their altars(CO)
    and destroy their sacred stones.(CP)

Then they will say, “We have no king
    because we did not revere the Lord.
But even if we had a king,
    what could he do for us?”
They make many promises,
    take false oaths(CQ)
    and make agreements;(CR)
therefore lawsuits spring up
    like poisonous weeds(CS) in a plowed field.
The people who live in Samaria fear
    for the calf-idol(CT) of Beth Aven.[b](CU)
Its people will mourn over it,
    and so will its idolatrous priests,(CV)
those who had rejoiced over its splendor,
    because it is taken from them into exile.(CW)
It will be carried to Assyria(CX)
    as tribute(CY) for the great king.(CZ)
Ephraim will be disgraced;(DA)
    Israel will be ashamed(DB) of its foreign alliances.
Samaria’s king will be destroyed,(DC)
    swept away like a twig on the surface of the waters.
The high places(DD) of wickedness[c](DE) will be destroyed—
    it is the sin of Israel.
Thorns(DF) and thistles will grow up
    and cover their altars.(DG)
Then they will say to the mountains, “Cover us!”(DH)
    and to the hills, “Fall on us!”(DI)

“Since the days of Gibeah,(DJ) you have sinned,(DK) Israel,
    and there you have remained.[d]
Will not war again overtake
    the evildoers in Gibeah?
10 When I please, I will punish(DL) them;
    nations will be gathered against them
    to put them in bonds for their double sin.
11 Ephraim is a trained heifer
    that loves to thresh;
so I will put a yoke(DM)
    on her fair neck.
I will drive Ephraim,
    Judah must plow,
    and Jacob must break up the ground.
12 Sow(DN) righteousness(DO) for yourselves,
    reap the fruit of unfailing love,
and break up your unplowed ground;(DP)
    for it is time to seek(DQ) the Lord,
until he comes
    and showers his righteousness(DR) on you.
13 But you have planted wickedness,
    you have reaped evil,(DS)
    you have eaten the fruit of deception.(DT)
Because you have depended on your own strength
    and on your many warriors,(DU)
14 the roar of battle will rise against your people,
    so that all your fortresses will be devastated(DV)
as Shalman(DW) devastated Beth Arbel on the day of battle,
    when mothers were dashed to the ground with their children.(DX)
15 So will it happen to you, Bethel,
    because your wickedness is great.
When that day dawns,
    the king of Israel will be completely destroyed.(DY)

God’s Love for Israel

11 “When Israel was a child,(DZ) I loved(EA) him,
    and out of Egypt I called my son.(EB)
But the more they were called,
    the more they went away from me.[e](EC)
They sacrificed to the Baals(ED)
    and they burned incense to images.(EE)
It was I who taught Ephraim to walk,
    taking them by the arms;(EF)
but they did not realize
    it was I who healed(EG) them.
I led them with cords of human kindness,
    with ties of love.(EH)
To them I was like one who lifts
    a little child to the cheek,
    and I bent down to feed(EI) them.(EJ)

“Will they not return to Egypt(EK)
    and will not Assyria(EL) rule over them
    because they refuse to repent?(EM)
A sword(EN) will flash in their cities;
    it will devour(EO) their false prophets
    and put an end to their plans.
My people are determined to turn(EP) from me.(EQ)
    Even though they call me God Most High,
    I will by no means exalt them.

“How can I give you up,(ER) Ephraim?(ES)
    How can I hand you over, Israel?
How can I treat you like Admah?
    How can I make you like Zeboyim?(ET)
My heart is changed within me;
    all my compassion(EU) is aroused.(EV)
I will not carry out my fierce anger,(EW)
    nor will I devastate(EX) Ephraim again.
For I am God, and not a man(EY)
    the Holy One(EZ) among you.
    I will not come against their cities.
10 They will follow the Lord;
    he will roar(FA) like a lion.(FB)
When he roars,
    his children will come trembling(FC) from the west.(FD)
11 They will come from Egypt,
    trembling like sparrows,
    from Assyria,(FE) fluttering like doves.(FF)
I will settle them in their homes,”(FG)
    declares the Lord.

Israel’s Sin

12 Ephraim has surrounded me with lies,(FH)
    Israel with deceit.
And Judah is unruly against God,
    even against the faithful(FI) Holy One.[f](FJ)

12 [g]Ephraim(FK) feeds on the wind;(FL)
    he pursues the east wind all day
    and multiplies lies and violence.(FM)
He makes a treaty with Assyria(FN)
    and sends olive oil to Egypt.(FO)
The Lord has a charge(FP) to bring against Judah;(FQ)
    he will punish(FR) Jacob[h] according to his ways
    and repay him according to his deeds.(FS)
In the womb he grasped his brother’s heel;(FT)
    as a man he struggled(FU) with God.
He struggled with the angel and overcame him;
    he wept and begged for his favor.
He found him at Bethel(FV)
    and talked with him there—
the Lord God Almighty,
    the Lord is his name!(FW)
But you must return(FX) to your God;
    maintain love and justice,(FY)
    and wait for your God always.(FZ)

The merchant uses dishonest scales(GA)
    and loves to defraud.
Ephraim boasts,(GB)
    “I am very rich; I have become wealthy.(GC)
With all my wealth they will not find in me
    any iniquity or sin.”

“I have been the Lord your God
    ever since you came out of Egypt;(GD)
I will make you live in tents(GE) again,
    as in the days of your appointed festivals.
10 I spoke to the prophets,
    gave them many visions
    and told parables(GF) through them.”(GG)

11 Is Gilead wicked?(GH)
    Its people are worthless!
Do they sacrifice bulls in Gilgal?(GI)
    Their altars will be like piles of stones
    on a plowed field.(GJ)
12 Jacob fled to the country of Aram[i];(GK)
    Israel served to get a wife,
    and to pay for her he tended sheep.(GL)
13 The Lord used a prophet to bring Israel up from Egypt,(GM)
    by a prophet he cared for him.(GN)
14 But Ephraim has aroused his bitter anger;
    his Lord will leave on him the guilt of his bloodshed(GO)
    and will repay him for his contempt.(GP)

The Lord’s Anger Against Israel

13 When Ephraim spoke, people trembled;(GQ)
    he was exalted(GR) in Israel.
    But he became guilty of Baal worship(GS) and died.
Now they sin more and more;
    they make(GT) idols for themselves from their silver,(GU)
cleverly fashioned images,
    all of them the work of craftsmen.(GV)
It is said of these people,
    “They offer human sacrifices!
    They kiss[j](GW) calf-idols!(GX)
Therefore they will be like the morning mist,
    like the early dew that disappears,(GY)
    like chaff(GZ) swirling from a threshing floor,(HA)
    like smoke(HB) escaping through a window.

“But I have been the Lord your God
    ever since you came out of Egypt.(HC)
You shall acknowledge(HD) no God but me,(HE)
    no Savior(HF) except me.
I cared for you in the wilderness,(HG)
    in the land of burning heat.
When I fed them, they were satisfied;
    when they were satisfied, they became proud;(HH)
    then they forgot(HI) me.(HJ)
So I will be like a lion(HK) to them,
    like a leopard I will lurk by the path.
Like a bear robbed of her cubs,(HL)
    I will attack them and rip them open;
like a lion(HM) I will devour them—
    a wild animal will tear them apart.(HN)

“You are destroyed, Israel,
    because you are against me,(HO) against your helper.(HP)
10 Where is your king,(HQ) that he may save you?
    Where are your rulers in all your towns,
of whom you said,
    ‘Give me a king and princes’?(HR)
11 So in my anger I gave you a king,(HS)
    and in my wrath I took him away.(HT)
12 The guilt of Ephraim is stored up,
    his sins are kept on record.(HU)
13 Pains as of a woman in childbirth(HV) come to him,
    but he is a child without wisdom;
when the time(HW) arrives,
    he doesn’t have the sense to come out of the womb.(HX)

14 “I will deliver this people from the power of the grave;(HY)
    I will redeem them from death.(HZ)
Where, O death, are your plagues?
    Where, O grave, is your destruction?(IA)

“I will have no compassion,
15     even though he thrives(IB) among his brothers.
An east wind(IC) from the Lord will come,
    blowing in from the desert;
his spring will fail
    and his well dry up.(ID)
His storehouse will be plundered(IE)
    of all its treasures.
16 The people of Samaria(IF) must bear their guilt,(IG)
    because they have rebelled(IH) against their God.
They will fall by the sword;(II)
    their little ones will be dashed(IJ) to the ground,
    their pregnant women(IK) ripped open.”[k]

Repentance to Bring Blessing

14 [l]Return,(IL) Israel, to the Lord your God.
    Your sins(IM) have been your downfall!(IN)
Take words with you
    and return to the Lord.
Say to him:
    “Forgive(IO) all our sins
and receive us graciously,(IP)
    that we may offer the fruit of our lips.[m](IQ)
Assyria cannot save us;(IR)
    we will not mount warhorses.(IS)
We will never again say ‘Our gods’(IT)
    to what our own hands have made,(IU)
    for in you the fatherless(IV) find compassion.”

“I will heal(IW) their waywardness(IX)
    and love them freely,(IY)
    for my anger has turned away(IZ) from them.
I will be like the dew(JA) to Israel;
    he will blossom like a lily.(JB)
Like a cedar of Lebanon(JC)
    he will send down his roots;(JD)
    his young shoots will grow.
His splendor will be like an olive tree,(JE)
    his fragrance like a cedar of Lebanon.(JF)
People will dwell again in his shade;(JG)
    they will flourish like the grain,
they will blossom(JH) like the vine—
    Israel’s fame will be like the wine(JI) of Lebanon.(JJ)
Ephraim, what more have I[n] to do with idols?(JK)
    I will answer him and care for him.
I am like a flourishing juniper;(JL)
    your fruitfulness comes from me.”

Who is wise?(JM) Let them realize these things.
    Who is discerning? Let them understand.(JN)
The ways of the Lord are right;(JO)
    the righteous walk(JP) in them,
    but the rebellious stumble in them.
