What shall I do with you, (A)O (B)Ephraim?
    What shall I do with you, O (C)Judah?
Your love is (D)like a morning cloud,
    (E)like the dew that goes early away.
Therefore I have hewn them by the prophets;
    I have slain them (F)by the words of my mouth,
    and my judgment goes forth as the light.
For (G)I desire steadfast love[a] and not sacrifice,
    (H)the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

But (I)like Adam they (J)transgressed the covenant;
    (K)there they dealt faithlessly with me.
(L)Gilead is a city of evildoers,
    (M)tracked with blood.
As robbers (N)lie in wait for a man,
    so the priests band together;
they murder on the way to (O)Shechem;
    they commit villainy.
10 In the house of Israel I have seen a horrible thing;
    (P)Ephraim's whoredom is there; (Q)Israel is defiled.

    they were unfaithful(I) to me there.
Gilead is a city of evildoers,(J)

As marauders lie in ambush for a victim,(K)
    so do bands of priests;
they murder(L) on the road to Shechem,
    carrying out their wicked schemes.(M)
10 I have seen a horrible(N) thing in Israel:
    There Ephraim is given to prostitution,
    Israel is defiled.(O)
