24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 (A)not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and (B)so much the more as you see (C)the Day approaching.

The Just Live by Faith

26 For (D)if we sin willfully (E)after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there (F)no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and (G)fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. 28 Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three (H)witnesses. 29 (I)Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, (J)counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, (K)and insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know Him who said, (L)“Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” [a]says the Lord. And again, (M)“The Lord will judge His people.” 31 (N)It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

32 But (O)recall the former days in which, after you were [b]illuminated, you endured a great struggle with sufferings: 33 partly while you were made (P)a spectacle both by reproaches and tribulations, and partly while (Q)you became companions of those who were so treated; 34 for you had compassion on [c]me (R)in my chains, and (S)joyfully accepted the plundering of your [d]goods, knowing that (T)you have a better and an enduring possession for yourselves [e]in heaven. 35 Therefore do not cast away your confidence, (U)which has great reward. 36 (V)For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, (W)you may receive the promise:

37 “For (X)yet a little while,
And (Y)He[f] who is coming will come and will not [g]tarry.
38 Now (Z)the[h] just shall live by faith;
But if anyone draws back,
My soul has no pleasure in him.”

39 But we are not of those (AA)who draw back to [i]perdition, but of those who (AB)believe to the saving of the soul.

By Faith We Understand

11 Now faith is the [j]substance of things hoped for, the [k]evidence (AC)of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.

By faith we understand that (AD)the [l]worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.

Faith at the Dawn of History(AE)

By faith (AF)Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still (AG)speaks.

By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, (AH)“and was not found, because God had taken him”; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God. But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

By faith (AI)Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, (AJ)prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of (AK)the righteousness which is according to faith.

Faithful Abraham(AL)

By faith (AM)Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, (AN)dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, (AO)the heirs with him of the same promise; 10 for he waited for (AP)the city which has foundations, (AQ)whose builder and maker is God.

11 By faith (AR)Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and (AS)she[m] bore a child when she was past the age, because she judged Him (AT)faithful who had promised. 12 Therefore from one man, and him as good as (AU)dead, were born as many as the (AV)stars of the sky in multitude—innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore.

The Heavenly Hope

13 These all died in faith, (AW)not having received the (AX)promises, but (AY)having seen them afar off [n]were assured of them, embraced them and (AZ)confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 14 For those who say such things (BA)declare plainly that they seek a homeland. 15 And truly if they had called to mind (BB)that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed (BC)to be called their God, for He has (BD)prepared a city for them.

The Faith of the Patriarchs(BE)

17 By faith Abraham, (BF)when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, 18 [o]of whom it was said, (BG)“In Isaac your seed shall be called,” 19 concluding that God (BH)was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense.

24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds,(A) 25 not giving up meeting together,(B) as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another(C)—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.(D)

26 If we deliberately keep on sinning(E) after we have received the knowledge of the truth,(F) no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire(G) that will consume the enemies of God. 28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.(H) 29 How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God(I) underfoot,(J) who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant(K) that sanctified them,(L) and who has insulted the Spirit(M) of grace?(N) 30 For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”[a](O) and again, “The Lord will judge his people.”[b](P) 31 It is a dreadful thing(Q) to fall into the hands(R) of the living God.(S)

32 Remember those earlier days after you had received the light,(T) when you endured in a great conflict full of suffering.(U) 33 Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution;(V) at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated.(W) 34 You suffered along with those in prison(X) and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions.(Y) 35 So do not throw away your confidence;(Z) it will be richly rewarded.

36 You need to persevere(AA) so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.(AB) 37 For,

“In just a little while,
he who is coming(AC) will come
    and will not delay.”[c](AD)

38 And,

“But my righteous[d] one will live by faith.(AE)
    And I take no pleasure
in the one who shrinks back.”[e](AF)

39 But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.

Faith in Action

11 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for(AG) and assurance about what we do not see.(AH) This is what the ancients were commended for.(AI)

By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command,(AJ) so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was commended(AK) as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings.(AL) And by faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead.(AM)

By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.”[f](AN) For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him(AO) must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen,(AP) in holy fear built an ark(AQ) to save his family.(AR) By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith.(AS)

By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance,(AT) obeyed and went,(AU) even though he did not know where he was going. By faith he made his home in the promised land(AV) like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents,(AW) as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise.(AX) 10 For he was looking forward to the city(AY) with foundations,(AZ) whose architect and builder is God.(BA) 11 And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age,(BB) was enabled to bear children(BC) because she[g] considered him faithful(BD) who had made the promise. 12 And so from this one man, and he as good as dead,(BE) came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore.(BF)

13 All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised;(BG) they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance,(BH) admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth.(BI) 14 People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. 15 If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return.(BJ) 16 Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one.(BK) Therefore God is not ashamed(BL) to be called their God,(BM) for he has prepared a city(BN) for them.

17 By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice.(BO) He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, 18 even though God had said to him, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.”[h](BP) 19 Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead,(BQ) and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death.
