15 Mahalalel lived sixty-five years, and begot Jared. 16 After he begot Jared, Mahalalel lived eight hundred and thirty years, and had sons and daughters. 17 So all the days of Mahalalel were eight hundred and ninety-five years; and he died.

18 Jared lived one hundred and sixty-two years, and begot (A)Enoch. 19 After he begot Enoch, Jared lived eight hundred years, and had sons and daughters. 20 So all the days of Jared were nine hundred and sixty-two years; and he died.

21 Enoch lived sixty-five years, and begot Methuselah. 22 After he begot Methuselah, Enoch (B)walked with God three hundred years, and had sons and daughters. 23 So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. 24 And (C)Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God (D)took him.

25 Methuselah lived one hundred and eighty-seven years, and begot Lamech. 26 After he begot Lamech, Methuselah lived seven hundred and eighty-two years, and had sons and daughters. 27 So all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred and sixty-nine years; and he died.

28 Lamech lived one hundred and eighty-two years, and had a son. 29 And he called his name (E)Noah,[a] saying, “This one will comfort us concerning our work and the toil of our hands, because of the ground (F)which the Lord has cursed.” 30 After he begot Noah, Lamech lived five hundred and ninety-five years, and had sons and daughters. 31 So all the days of Lamech were seven hundred and seventy-seven years; and he died.

32 And Noah was five hundred years old, and Noah begot (G)Shem, Ham, (H)and Japheth.

The Wickedness and Judgment of Man

Now it came to pass, (I)when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they (J)took wives for themselves of all whom they chose.

And the Lord said, (K)“My Spirit shall not (L)strive[b] with man forever, (M)for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.” There were [c]giants on the earth in those (N)days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.

Then [d]the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every (O)intent[e] of the thoughts of his heart was only evil [f]continually. And (P)the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and (Q)He was grieved in His (R)heart. So the Lord said, “I will (S)destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.” But Noah (T)found grace in the eyes of the Lord.

Noah Pleases God

This is the genealogy of Noah. (U)Noah was a just man, [g]perfect in his generations. Noah (V)walked with God. 10 And Noah begot three sons: (W)Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

11 The earth also was corrupt (X)before God, and the earth was (Y)filled with violence. 12 So God (Z)looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for (AA)all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.

The Ark Prepared(AB)

13 And God said to Noah, (AC)“The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through them; (AD)and behold, (AE)I will destroy them with the earth. 14 Make yourself an ark of gopherwood; make [h]rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and outside with pitch. 15 And this is how you shall make it: The length of the ark shall be three hundred [i]cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. 16 You shall make a window for the ark, and you shall finish it to a cubit from above; and set the door of the ark in its side. You shall make it with lower, second, and third decks. 17 (AF)And behold, I Myself am bringing (AG)floodwaters on the earth, to destroy from under heaven all flesh in which is the breath of life; everything that is on the earth shall (AH)die. 18 But I will establish My (AI)covenant with you; and (AJ)you shall go into the ark—you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you. 19 And of every living thing of all flesh you shall bring (AK)two of every sort into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female. 20 Of the birds after their kind, of animals after their kind, and of every creeping thing of the earth after its kind, two of every kind (AL)will come to you to keep them alive. 21 And you shall take for yourself of all food that is eaten, and you shall gather it to yourself; and it shall be food for you and for them.”

22 (AM)Thus Noah did; (AN)according to all that (AO)God commanded him, so he did.

Wickedness in the World

When human beings began to increase in number on the earth(M) and daughters were born to them, the sons of God(N) saw that the daughters(O) of humans were beautiful,(P) and they married(Q) any of them they chose. Then the Lord said, “My Spirit(R) will not contend with[b] humans forever,(S) for they are mortal[c];(T) their days will be a hundred and twenty years.”

The Nephilim(U) were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans(V) and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.(W)

The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth,(X) and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.(Y) The Lord regretted(Z) that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth(AA) the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.(AB) But Noah(AC) found favor in the eyes of the Lord.(AD)

Noah and the Flood

This is the account(AE) of Noah and his family.

Noah was a righteous man, blameless(AF) among the people of his time,(AG) and he walked faithfully with God.(AH) 10 Noah had three sons: Shem,(AI) Ham and Japheth.(AJ)

11 Now the earth was corrupt(AK) in God’s sight and was full of violence.(AL) 12 God saw how corrupt(AM) the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways.(AN) 13 So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy(AO) both them and the earth.(AP) 14 So make yourself an ark of cypress[d] wood;(AQ) make rooms in it and coat it with pitch(AR) inside and out. 15 This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide and thirty cubits high.[e] 16 Make a roof for it, leaving below the roof an opening one cubit[f] high all around.[g] Put a door in the side of the ark and make lower, middle and upper decks. 17 I am going to bring floodwaters(AS) on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish.(AT) 18 But I will establish my covenant with you,(AU) and you will enter the ark(AV)—you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you. 19 You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you.(AW) 20 Two(AX) of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal and of every kind(AY) of creature that moves along the ground will come to you to be kept alive.(AZ) 21 You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you and for them.”

22 Noah did everything just as God commanded him.(BA)

Increasing Corruption on Earth

When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose. Then the Lord said, (H)“My Spirit shall not abide in[d] man forever, (I)for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.” The Nephilim[e] were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown.

(J)The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every (K)intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And (L)the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it (M)grieved him to his heart. So the Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.” But Noah (N)found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

Noah and the Flood

These are the generations of Noah. (O)Noah was a righteous man, (P)blameless in his generation. Noah (Q)walked with God. 10 And Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

11 Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 And God (R)saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, (S)for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth. 13 And God said to Noah, (T)“I have determined to make an end of all flesh,[f] for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold, I will destroy them with the earth. 14 Make yourself an ark of gopher wood.[g] Make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch. 15 This is how you are to make it: the length of the ark 300 cubits,[h] its breadth 50 cubits, and its height 30 cubits. 16 Make a roof[i] for the ark, and finish it to a cubit above, and set the door of the ark in its side. Make it with lower, second, and third decks. 17 (U)For behold, I will bring a flood of waters upon the earth to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life under heaven. Everything that is on the earth shall die. 18 But (V)I will establish my covenant with you, and you shall come into the ark, you, your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with you. 19 And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every sort into the ark to keep them alive with you. They shall be male and female. 20 Of the birds according to their kinds, and of the animals according to their kinds, of every creeping thing of the ground, according to its kind, two of every sort shall come in to you to keep them alive. 21 Also take with you every sort of food that is eaten, and store it up. It shall serve as food for you and for them.” 22 (W)Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him.

32 When Noah was 500 years old, he had Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Giants in the Land

1-2 When the human race began to increase, with more and more daughters being born, the sons of God noticed that the daughters of men were beautiful. They looked them over and picked out wives for themselves.

Then God said, “I’m not going to breathe life into men and women endlessly. Eventually they’re going to die; from now on they can expect a life span of 120 years.”

This was back in the days (and also later) when there were giants in the land. The giants came from the union of the sons of God and the daughters of men. These were the mighty men of ancient lore, the famous ones.

Noah and His Sons

5-7 God saw that human evil was out of control. People thought evil, imagined evil—evil, evil, evil from morning to night. God was sorry that he had made the human race in the first place; it broke his heart. God said, “I’ll get rid of my ruined creation, make a clean sweep: people, animals, snakes and bugs, birds—the works. I’m sorry I made them.”

But Noah was different. God liked what he saw in Noah.

9-10 This is the story of Noah: Noah was a good man, a man of integrity in his community. Noah walked with God. Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

11-12 As far as God was concerned, the Earth had become a sewer; there was violence everywhere. God took one look and saw how bad it was, everyone corrupt and corrupting—life itself corrupt to the core.

13 God said to Noah, “It’s all over. It’s the end of the human race. The violence is everywhere; I’m making a clean sweep.

14-16 “Build yourself a ship from teakwood. Make rooms in it. Coat it with pitch inside and out. Make it 450 feet long, seventy-five feet wide, and forty-five feet high. Build a roof for it and put in a window eighteen inches from the top; put in a door on the side of the ship; and make three decks, lower, middle, and upper.

17 “I’m going to bring a flood on the Earth that will destroy everything alive under Heaven. Total destruction.

18-21 “But I’m going to establish a covenant with you: You’ll board the ship, and your sons, your wife and your sons’ wives will come on board with you. You are also to take two of each living creature, a male and a female, on board the ship, to preserve their lives with you: two of every species of bird, mammal, and reptile—two of everything so as to preserve their lives along with yours. Also get all the food you’ll need and store it up for you and them.”

22 Noah did everything God commanded him to do.
