³ And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant^(A) in my household^(B) will be my heir.”

⁴ Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.^(C)” ⁵ He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars^(D)—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring^[a] be.”^(E)

⁶ Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.^(F)

Abraham Justified by Faith

4 What then shall we say^(A) that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh,^(B) discovered in this matter? ² If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about—but not before God.^{(C) 3} What does Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”^[a](D)
