Na ka mohio a Arama ki a Iwi, ki tana wahine; a ka hapu ia, a ka whanau a Kaina; na ka mea ia, Kua whakawhiwhia mai ahau e Ihowa ki tetahi tangata.

Na ka whanau ano tona teina, a Apera. Na he kaiwhangai hipi a Apera, ko Kaina ia he kaingaki whenua.

Me Apera hoki, i kawea e ia etahi o nga whanau matamua o tana kahui, o o ratou ngako hoki. A ka aro a Ihowa ki a Apera, ki tana whakahere:

Kihai ia i aro ki a Kaina, ki tana whakahere. A he nui rawa te riri o Kaina, a whakapoururu ana tona mata.

Na ka mea a Ihowa ki a Kaina, He aha koe i riri ai? a he aha i whakapoururu ai tou mata?

11 Na ka kanga koe i runga i te whenua, i hamama nei tona waha hei rerenga atu mo te toto o tou teina i whakahekea nei e tou ringa;

25 A i mohio ano a Arama ki tana wahine; ka whanau tana tama, a huaina iho tona ingoa ko Heta; i mea hoki ia, Ka rite mai nei i te Atua tetahi atu uri moku hei whakakapi mo Apera i patua nei e Kaina.

26 Me Heta ano hoki, i whanau tana tama; a huaina ana tona ingoa ko Enoha: no reira i timata ai te tangata te karanga ki te ingoa o Ihowa.

Ko te pukapuka tenei o nga whakatupuranga o Arama. I te ra i hanga ai te tangata e te Atua, i hanga ia e ia kia rite ki te Atua;

I hanga raua he tane, he wahine; a i manaakitia raua e ia, i huaina hoki to raua ingoa ko Arama, i te ra i hanga ai raua.

A ka kotahi rau ka toru tekau nga tau i ora ai a Arama, na ka whanau tana tama, nona te ahua, rite tonu ki a ia; a huaina ana tona ingoa ko Heta:

A ko nga ra o Arama i muri i te whanautanga o Heta e waru rau tau: a ka whanau he tama, he tamahine mana:

Na ko nga ra katoa i ora ai a Arama e iwa rau e toru tekau tau: a ka mate ia.

A kotahi rau e rima nga tau i ora ai a Heta, ka whanau tana tama, a Enoha:

A e waru rau e whitu nga tau i ora ai a Heta i muri iho i te whanautanga o tana tama, o Enoha, a ka whanau he tama, he tamahine mana:

Na ko nga ra katoa o Heta e iwa rau kotahi tekau ma rua tau: a ka mate ia.

A ka iwa tekau nga tau i ora ai a Enoha, na ka whanau tana tama a Kenana:

10 A e waru rau kotahi tekau ma rima nga tau i ora ai a Enoha i muri iho i te whanautanga o tana tama, o Kenana, a ka whanau he tama, he tamahine mana:

11 Na ko nga ra katoa o Enoha e iwa rau ma rima tau: a ka mate.

12 A ka whitu tekau nga tau i ora ai a Kenana, ka whanau tana tama, a Maharareere:

13 A e waru rau e wha tekau nga tau i ora ai a Kenana i muri iho i te whanautanga o tana tama, o Maharareere, a ka whanau he tama, he tamahine mana:

15 A ka ono tekau ma rima nga tau i ora ai a Maharareere, na ka whanau tana tama, a Iarere:

16 A e waru rau e toru tekau nga tau i ora ai a Maharareere i muri i te whanautanga o tana tama, o Iarere, a ka whanau he tama, he tamahine mana:

17 A e waru rau e iwa tekau ma rima tau nga ra katoa o Maharareere: a ka mate.

18 A kotahi rau e ono tekau ma rua nga tau i ora ai a Iarere, a ka whanau tana tama, a Enoka:

19 A e waru rau nga tau i ora ai a Iarere i muri iho i te whanautanga o tana tama, o Enoka, a ka whanau he tama, he tamahine mana:

22 A e toru rau nga tau i haereere tahi ai a Enoka i te Atua i muri iho i te whanautanga o tana tama, o Matuhara, a ka whanau he tama, he tamahine mana:

23 A e toru rau e ono tekau ma rima tau nga ra katoa o Enoka.

24 A i haereere tahi a Enoka i te Atua: a kua kahore ia: na te Atua hoki ia i tango.

25 A kotahi rau e waru tekau ma whitu nga tau i ora ai a Matuhara, na ka whanau tana tama, a Rameka:

26 A e whitu rau e waru tekau ma rua nga tau i ora ai a Matuhara i muri iho i te whanautanga o tana tama, o Rameka, a ka whanau he tama, he tamahine mana:

29 A huaina ana e ia tona ingoa ko Noa; i mea hoki ia, Ma tenei e whakahauora o tatou ngakau i a tatou mahi, i te ruha hoki o o tatou ringa, i te oneone kua oti nei te kanga e Ihowa.

30 A e rima rau e iwa tekau ma rima nga tau i ora ai a Rameka i muri i te whanautanga o tana tama, o Noa, a ka whanau he tama, he tamahine mana:

31 A ko nga ra katoa o Rameka e whitu rau e whitu tekau ma whitu: a ka mate ia.

32 A ka rima rau nga tau o Noa, na ka whanau nga tama a Noa, ko Hema, ko Hama, ko Iapeta.

Ko Noa ia i manakohia e Ihowa.

Ko nga whakatupuranga enei o Noa: ko Noa he tangata tika, he ngakau tapatahi i ona whakatupuranga: i haereere tahi a Noa i te Atua.

10 A whanau ake nga tama a Noa tokotoru, ko Hema, ko Hama, ko Iapeta.

21 Tangohia mai hoki mau etahi o nga kai katoa e kainga ana, me amene mai ki a koe; a hei ka tena mau, ma ratou hoki.

22 Na ka meatia e Noa; rite tonu ki nga mea katoa i whakahaua mai e te Atua ki a ia tana i mea ai.

Cain and Abel

Adam[a] made love to his wife(A) Eve,(B) and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain.[b](C) She said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth[c] a man.” Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.(D)

Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil.(E) In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering(F) to the Lord.(G) And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions(H) from some of the firstborn of his flock.(I) The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering,(J) but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.

Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry?(K) Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door;(L) it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.(M)

Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.”[d] While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.(N)

Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”(O)

“I don’t know,(P)” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”

10 The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.(Q) 11 Now you are under a curse(R) and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you.(S) You will be a restless wanderer(T) on the earth.(U)

13 Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is more than I can bear. 14 Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence;(V) I will be a restless wanderer on the earth,(W) and whoever finds me will kill me.”(X)

15 But the Lord said to him, “Not so[e]; anyone who kills Cain(Y) will suffer vengeance(Z) seven times over.(AA)” Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. 16 So Cain went out from the Lord’s presence(AB) and lived in the land of Nod,[f] east of Eden.(AC)

17 Cain made love to his wife,(AD) and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city,(AE) and he named it after his son(AF) Enoch. 18 To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.

19 Lamech married(AG) two women,(AH) one named Adah and the other Zillah. 20 Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock. 21 His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play stringed instruments(AI) and pipes.(AJ) 22 Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged(AK) all kinds of tools out of[g] bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain’s sister was Naamah.

23 Lamech said to his wives,

“Adah and Zillah, listen to me;
wives of Lamech, hear my words.
I have killed(AL) a man for wounding me,
a young man for injuring me.
24 If Cain is avenged(AM) seven times,(AN)
    then Lamech seventy-seven times.(AO)

25 Adam made love to his wife(AP) again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth,[h](AQ) saying, “God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.”(AR) 26 Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh.(AS)

At that time people began to call on[i] the name of the Lord.(AT)

From Adam to Noah

This is the written account(AU) of Adam’s family line.(AV)

When God created mankind, he made them in the likeness of God.(AW) He created them(AX) male and female(AY) and blessed them. And he named them “Mankind”[j] when they were created.

When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image;(AZ) and he named him Seth.(BA) After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Adam lived a total of 930 years, and then he died.(BB)

When Seth had lived 105 years, he became the father[k] of Enosh.(BC) After he became the father of Enosh, Seth lived 807 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Seth lived a total of 912 years, and then he died.

When Enosh had lived 90 years, he became the father of Kenan.(BD) 10 After he became the father of Kenan, Enosh lived 815 years and had other sons and daughters. 11 Altogether, Enosh lived a total of 905 years, and then he died.

12 When Kenan had lived 70 years, he became the father of Mahalalel.(BE) 13 After he became the father of Mahalalel, Kenan lived 840 years and had other sons and daughters. 14 Altogether, Kenan lived a total of 910 years, and then he died.

15 When Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he became the father of Jared.(BF) 16 After he became the father of Jared, Mahalalel lived 830 years and had other sons and daughters. 17 Altogether, Mahalalel lived a total of 895 years, and then he died.

18 When Jared had lived 162 years, he became the father of Enoch.(BG) 19 After he became the father of Enoch, Jared lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 20 Altogether, Jared lived a total of 962 years, and then he died.

21 When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah.(BH) 22 After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked faithfully with God(BI) 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23 Altogether, Enoch lived a total of 365 years. 24 Enoch walked faithfully with God;(BJ) then he was no more, because God took him away.(BK)

25 When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he became the father of Lamech.(BL) 26 After he became the father of Lamech, Methuselah lived 782 years and had other sons and daughters. 27 Altogether, Methuselah lived a total of 969 years, and then he died.

28 When Lamech had lived 182 years, he had a son. 29 He named him Noah[l](BM) and said, “He will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our hands caused by the ground the Lord has cursed.(BN) 30 After Noah was born, Lamech lived 595 years and had other sons and daughters. 31 Altogether, Lamech lived a total of 777 years, and then he died.

32 After Noah was 500 years old,(BO) he became the father of Shem,(BP) Ham and Japheth.(BQ)

Wickedness in the World

When human beings began to increase in number on the earth(BR) and daughters were born to them, the sons of God(BS) saw that the daughters(BT) of humans were beautiful,(BU) and they married(BV) any of them they chose. Then the Lord said, “My Spirit(BW) will not contend with[m] humans forever,(BX) for they are mortal[n];(BY) their days will be a hundred and twenty years.”

The Nephilim(BZ) were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans(CA) and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.(CB)

The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth,(CC) and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.(CD) The Lord regretted(CE) that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth(CF) the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.(CG) But Noah(CH) found favor in the eyes of the Lord.(CI)

Noah and the Flood

This is the account(CJ) of Noah and his family.

Noah was a righteous man, blameless(CK) among the people of his time,(CL) and he walked faithfully with God.(CM) 10 Noah had three sons: Shem,(CN) Ham and Japheth.(CO)

11 Now the earth was corrupt(CP) in God’s sight and was full of violence.(CQ) 12 God saw how corrupt(CR) the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways.(CS) 13 So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy(CT) both them and the earth.(CU) 14 So make yourself an ark of cypress[o] wood;(CV) make rooms in it and coat it with pitch(CW) inside and out. 15 This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide and thirty cubits high.[p] 16 Make a roof for it, leaving below the roof an opening one cubit[q] high all around.[r] Put a door in the side of the ark and make lower, middle and upper decks. 17 I am going to bring floodwaters(CX) on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish.(CY) 18 But I will establish my covenant with you,(CZ) and you will enter the ark(DA)—you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you. 19 You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you.(DB) 20 Two(DC) of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal and of every kind(DD) of creature that moves along the ground will come to you to be kept alive.(DE) 21 You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you and for them.”

22 Noah did everything just as God commanded him.(DF)

A, no te rongonga o Kingi Herora, ka ohorere ratou ko Hiruharama katoa.

A ko koe, e Peterehema, whenua o Hura, ehara rawa i te iti rawa i roto i nga kawana o Hura: e puta mai hoki i a koe he kawana, hei hepara mo taku iwi, mo Iharaira.

17 Katahi ka rite ta Heremaia poropiti i korero ai, i mea ai,

18 I rangona he reo ki Rama, he uhunga, he tangi, he aue nui, ko Rahera e tangi ana ki ana tamariki, a kihai i pai kia whakamarietia, no te mea kua kahore ratou.

22 Otira ka rongo ia ko Arakerauha te kingi o Huria i muri i tona matua, i a Herora, ka wehi ki te haere ki reira: otiia i whakamaharatia ia e te Atua, he mea moemoea, a haere ana ki nga wahi o Kariri;

23 A ka tae, a ka noho ki tetahi pa, ko Nahareta te ingoa; i rite ai ta nga poropiti i mea ai, Me hua ia he tangata no Nahareta.

The Magi Visit the Messiah

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea,(A) during the time of King Herod,(B) Magi[a] from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?(C) We saw his star(D) when it rose and have come to worship him.”

When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. “In Bethlehem(E) in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written:

“‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
    are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for out of you will come a ruler
who will shepherd my people Israel.’[b](F)

Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”

After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.(G) Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts(H) of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned(I) in a dream(J) not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

The Escape to Egypt

13 When they had gone, an angel(K) of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream.(L) “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”(M)

14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled(N) what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”[c](O)

16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:(P)

18 “A voice is heard in Ramah,
    weeping and great mourning,
Rachel(Q) weeping for her children
    and refusing to be comforted,
    because they are no more.”[d](R)

The Return to Nazareth

19 After Herod died, an angel(S) of the Lord appeared in a dream(T) to Joseph in Egypt 20 and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.”(U)

21 So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream,(V) he withdrew to the district of Galilee,(W) 23 and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth.(X) So was fulfilled(Y) what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.(Z)
