¶ Lè sa a, Adan kouche ak Ev, madanm li. Madanm li vin ansent. Li fè yon pitit gason, li rele l' Kayen, epi li di. Avèk konkou Bondye, mwen gen yon gason.

Apre sa, li fè Abèl, frè Kayen. Abèl te gadò mouton, Kayen menm te travay latè.

¶ Kèk tan apre sa, Kayen pran nan rekòt li, li ofri bay Seye a.

Abèl menm, bò pa l', pran sa ki pi gra nan premye pitit mouton l' yo, li ofri bay Seyè a. Seyè a te kontan ofrann Abèl la.

Men, li pa t' asepte ofrann Kayen an.

Vwala, antan yo nan jaden an, Kayen vire sou frè li, li touye li.

¶ Seyè a mande Kayen. Kote Abèl, frè ou la? Kayen reponn. Mwen pa konnen. Eske ou te mete m' veye l'?

10 Bondye di l' konsa. Kisa ou fè konsa? San Abèl, frè ou, ki koule atè a, ap rele tankou yon vwa moun. Li rive jouk nan zòrèy mwen. L'ap mande revanj.

11 Koulye a, tè ki te louvri bouch li pou l' te bwè san frè ou ou te fè koule a, menm tè sa a ap tounen yon madichon pou ou.

12 Lè w'a travay latè, li p'ap ba ou sa l' te dwe ba ou. W'ap tounen yon vakabon k'ap plede mache toupatou sou latè san rete.

13 ¶ Kayen di Seyè a: Chatiman an twòp pou mwen. Mwen p'ap ka sipòte l'.

14 Men ou mete m' deyò sou tè sa a koulye a, se kache pou m' al kache pou ou pa wè m'. M'ap tounen yon vakabon k'ap plede mache toupatou sou latè san rete. Nenpòt moun ki jwenn mwen va touye m'.

15 Seyè a di: Non. Paske, si yon moun touye Kayen, y'ap fè l' peye sa sèt fwa. Se konsa, li mete yon siy sou Kayen pou moun pa touye l' si yo jwenn li.

16 ¶ Apre sa, Kayen wete kò l' devan Seyè a, li al rete nan yon peyi yo rele Nòd, lòt bò jaden Edenn lan, sou kote solèy leve a.

17 Kayen kouche avèk madanm li. Madanm li vin ansent, li fè yon ti gason yo rele Enòk. Apre sa, Kayen bati yon vil, li rele l' Enòk. Li ba l' menm non ak pitit gason l' lan.

Mwen touye yon moun paske li leve men li sou mwen. Mwen touye yon jenn gason paske li mete san m' deyò.

24 Si yon moun touye Kayen y'ap fè l' peye sa sèt fwa. Men, si yon moun touye m', mwen menm Lemèk, y'ap fè l' peye sa swasanndisèt fwa.

25 ¶ Adan te kouche ak madanm li ankò. Madanm li fè yon ti gason. Madanm lan di: Bondye ban m' yon lòt gason pou ranplase Abèl Kayen te touye a.

¶ Men lis non pitit pitit Adan yo: Lè Bondye kreye moun, li te fè yo pòtre avè l'.

Li kreye yo gason ak fi. Li beni yo. Jou li kreye yo a, li rele yo moun.

Adan te gen santrantan (130 an) lè li vin gen yon pitit gason ki te sanble avè l' tèt koupe, li rele l' Sèt.

Apre nesans Sèt, Adan viv witsanzan (800 an). Li te vin gen anpil lòt pitit gason ak pitit fi.

Lè Adan mouri li te gen nèfsantrantan (930 an).

¶ Sèt te gen sansenkan (105 an) lè li vin gen yon pitit gason yo te rele Enòk.

Apre nesans Enòk, Sèt viv witsansetan (807 an). Li te vin gen anpil lòt pitit gason ak pitit fi.

Lè Sèt mouri, li te gen nèfsandouzan (912 an).

Enòk te gen katrevendizan lè li vin gen yon pitit gason yo rele Kenan.

10 Apre nesans Kenan, Enòk viv witsankenzan (815 an). Li te vin gen anpil lòt pitit gason ak pitit fi.

11 Lè Enòk mouri, li te gen nèfsansenkan (905 an).

12 Kenan te gen swasanndizan lè li vin gen yon pitit gason yo rele Malaleyèl.

13 Apre nesans Malaleyèl, Kenan viv witsankarantan (840 an). Li te vin gen anpil lòt pitit gason ak pitit fi.

14 Lè Kenan mouri, li te gen nèfsandizan (910 an).

15 Malaleyèl te gen swasannsenkan lè li vin gen yon pitit gason yo rele Jerèd.

16 Apre nesans Jerèd, Malaleyèl viv witsantrantan (830 an). Li te vin gen anpil lòt pitit gason ak pitit fi.

17 Lè Malaleyèl mouri, li te gen witsankatrevenkenzan (895 an).

18 Jerèd te gen sanswanndezan (162 an) lè li vin gen yon pitit gason yo rele Enòk.

19 Apre nesans Enòk, Jerèd viv witsanzan (800 an). Li te vin gen anpil lòt pitit gason ak pitit fi.

20 Lè Jerèd mouri, li te gen nèfsanswasanndezan (962 an).

21 ¶ Enòk te gen swasannsenkan lè li vin gen yon pitit gason yo rele Metouchela.

22 Apre nesans Metouchela, Enòk te mache byen ak Bondye pandan twasanzan (300 an). Li te vin gen anpil lòt pitit gason ak pitit fi.

23 -

24 Enòk te pase tout vi l' ap mache byen ak Bondye. Li te gen twasanswasannsenkan (365 an) lè l' disparèt, paske Bondye te pran l' avè l'.

25 ¶ Metouchela te gen sankatrevensètan (187 an) lè li vin gen yon pitit gason yo rele Lemèk.

26 Apre nesans Lemèk, Metouchela viv sètsankatrevendezan (782 an). Li te vin gen anpil lòt pitit gason ak pitit fi.

27 Lè Metouchela mouri, li te gen nèfsanswantnevan (969 an).

28 ¶ Lemèk te gen sankatrevendezan (182 an) lè li vin gen yon pitit gason.

29 Li rele l' Noe. Li di konsa: Pitit sa a va soulaje nou anba tout travay di n'ap fè, anba gwo travay nou blije fè avèk men nou paske Seyè a te madichonnen tè a.

30 Apre nesans Noe, Lemèk viv senksankatrevenkenzan (595 an). Li te vin gen anpil lòt pitit gason ak pitit fi.

31 Lè Lemèk mouri, li te gen sètsanswasanndisetan (777 an).

32 Noe te gen senksanzan (500 an) lè li vin gen twa pitit gason: Sèm, Kam ak Jafè.

Se sanventan (120 an) sèlman pou yo viv.

¶ Men, Noe te fè Bondye plezi.

Men pitit pitit Noe yo. Nan tout moun ki t'ap viv lè sa a, Noe te sèl moun ki t'ap mache dwat devan Bondye, ki pa t' nan anyen ki mal. Li t'ap mache byen ak Bondye.

10 Li te gen twa pitit gason: Sèm, Kam ak Jafè.

11 ¶ Men, tout lòt moun yo te fin pouri devan Bondye.

W'a fè anpil ti chanm ladan l'. W'a badijonnen l' byen badijonnen anndan kou deyò avèk goudwon.

15 Men ki jan pou ou fè l': Batiman an va gen katsansenkant (450) pye longè, swasannkenz pye lajè, ak karannsenk pye wotè.

16 W'a mete yon twati sou batiman an. W'a kite yon espas dizwit pous ant twati a ak rebò a. W'a louvri yon sèl pòt sou kote batiman an. W'a mete yon etaj anba, yon etaj nan mitan, yon etaj anwo.

18 Men, m'ap fè yon kontra avè ou.

Wa fè yo antre nan batiman an ansanm ak ou pou yo pa mouri.

Cain and Abel

Adam[a] made love to his wife(A) Eve,(B) and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain.[b](C) She said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth[c] a man.” Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.(D)

Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil.(E) In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering(F) to the Lord.(G) And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions(H) from some of the firstborn of his flock.(I) The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering,(J) but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.

Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry?(K) Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door;(L) it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.(M)

Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.”[d] While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.(N)

Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”(O)

“I don’t know,(P)” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”

10 The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.(Q) 11 Now you are under a curse(R) and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you.(S) You will be a restless wanderer(T) on the earth.(U)

13 Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is more than I can bear. 14 Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence;(V) I will be a restless wanderer on the earth,(W) and whoever finds me will kill me.”(X)

15 But the Lord said to him, “Not so[e]; anyone who kills Cain(Y) will suffer vengeance(Z) seven times over.(AA)” Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. 16 So Cain went out from the Lord’s presence(AB) and lived in the land of Nod,[f] east of Eden.(AC)

17 Cain made love to his wife,(AD) and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city,(AE) and he named it after his son(AF) Enoch. 18 To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.

19 Lamech married(AG) two women,(AH) one named Adah and the other Zillah. 20 Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock. 21 His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play stringed instruments(AI) and pipes.(AJ) 22 Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged(AK) all kinds of tools out of[g] bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain’s sister was Naamah.

23 Lamech said to his wives,

“Adah and Zillah, listen to me;
wives of Lamech, hear my words.
I have killed(AL) a man for wounding me,
a young man for injuring me.
24 If Cain is avenged(AM) seven times,(AN)
    then Lamech seventy-seven times.(AO)

25 Adam made love to his wife(AP) again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth,[h](AQ) saying, “God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.”(AR) 26 Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh.(AS)

At that time people began to call on[i] the name of the Lord.(AT)

From Adam to Noah

This is the written account(AU) of Adam’s family line.(AV)

When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image;(AZ) and he named him Seth.(BA) After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Adam lived a total of 930 years, and then he died.(BB)

When Seth had lived 105 years, he became the father[k] of Enosh.(BC) After he became the father of Enosh, Seth lived 807 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Seth lived a total of 912 years, and then he died.

32 After Noah was 500 years old,(BO) he became the father of Shem,(BP) Ham and Japheth.(BQ)

Wickedness in the World

When human beings began to increase in number on the earth(BR) and daughters were born to them, the sons of God(BS) saw that the daughters(BT) of humans were beautiful,(BU) and they married(BV) any of them they chose. Then the Lord said, “My Spirit(BW) will not contend with[m] humans forever,(BX) for they are mortal[n];(BY) their days will be a hundred and twenty years.”

The Nephilim(BZ) were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans(CA) and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.(CB)

The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth,(CC) and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.(CD) The Lord regretted(CE) that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth(CF) the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.(CG) But Noah(CH) found favor in the eyes of the Lord.(CI)

Noah and the Flood

This is the account(CJ) of Noah and his family.

Noah was a righteous man, blameless(CK) among the people of his time,(CL) and he walked faithfully with God.(CM) 10 Noah had three sons: Shem,(CN) Ham and Japheth.(CO)

11 Now the earth was corrupt(CP) in God’s sight and was full of violence.(CQ) 12 God saw how corrupt(CR) the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways.(CS) 13 So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy(CT) both them and the earth.(CU) 14 So make yourself an ark of cypress[o] wood;(CV) make rooms in it and coat it with pitch(CW) inside and out. 15 This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide and thirty cubits high.[p] 16 Make a roof for it, leaving below the roof an opening one cubit[q] high all around.[r] Put a door in the side of the ark and make lower, middle and upper decks. 17 I am going to bring floodwaters(CX) on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish.(CY) 18 But I will establish my covenant with you,(CZ) and you will enter the ark(DA)—you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you. 19 You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you.(DB) 20 Two(DC) of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal and of every kind(DD) of creature that moves along the ground will come to you to be kept alive.(DE) 21 You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you and for them.”

22 Noah did everything just as God commanded him.(DF)

And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord.

And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord.

And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering:

But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

And the Lord said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?

If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

And the Lord said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?

10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.

11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;

12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.

13 And Cain said unto the Lord, My punishment is greater than I can bear.

14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.

15 And the Lord said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the Lord set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.

16 And Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.

18 And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech.

19 And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.

20 And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.

21 And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.

22 And Zillah, she also bare Tubalcain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubalcain was Naamah.

23 And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.

24 If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.

25 And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.

26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the Lord.

This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him;

Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.

And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, and after his image; and called his name Seth:

And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters:

And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died.

And Seth lived an hundred and five years, and begat Enos:

And Seth lived after he begat Enos eight hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters:

And all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years: and he died.

And Enos lived ninety years, and begat Cainan:

10 And Enos lived after he begat Cainan eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters:

11 And all the days of Enos were nine hundred and five years: and he died.

12 And Cainan lived seventy years and begat Mahalaleel:

13 And Cainan lived after he begat Mahalaleel eight hundred and forty years, and begat sons and daughters:

14 And all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years: and he died.

15 And Mahalaleel lived sixty and five years, and begat Jared:

16 And Mahalaleel lived after he begat Jared eight hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters:

17 And all the days of Mahalaleel were eight hundred ninety and five years: and he died.

18 And Jared lived an hundred sixty and two years, and he begat Enoch:

19 And Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:

20 And all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years: and he died.

21 And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah:

22 And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:

23 And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years:

24 And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

25 And Methuselah lived an hundred eighty and seven years, and begat Lamech.

26 And Methuselah lived after he begat Lamech seven hundred eighty and two years, and begat sons and daughters:

27 And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years: and he died.

28 And Lamech lived an hundred eighty and two years, and begat a son:

29 And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the Lord hath cursed.

30 And Lamech lived after he begat Noah five hundred ninety and five years, and begat sons and daughters:

31 And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy and seven years: and he died.

32 And Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,

That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.

But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.

These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.

10 And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.

12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.

13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

14 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.

15 And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits.

16 A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.

17 And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.

18 But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee.

19 And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female.

20 Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive.

21 And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them.

22 Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.

¶ Jezi te fèt lavil Betleyèm nan peyi Jide, sou tan wa Ewòd. Apre li te fèt, kèk nèg save ki konn etidye zetwal yo soti nan peyi solèy leve, yo rive lavil Jerizalèm.

Yo t'ap mande: Kote wa jwif ki fenk fèt la? Nou wè zetwal li parèt depi nan peyi nou an, nou vin adore li.

Yo reponn li: Se lavil Betleyèm nan peyi Jide li gen pou l' fèt.

Se li menm ki va kondi moun Izrayèl yo, pèp mwen an.

Se konsa, Ewòd fè nèg save yo vin jwenn li an kachèt.

Li t'ap mache devan yo. Zetwal la kontinye konsa jouk li rive sou tèt kay kote ti pitit la te ye a. Epi l' rete.

10 Lè yo te wè zetwal la, yo pa t' manke kontan.

11 Yo antre nan kay la, yo wè ti pitit la ansanm ak Mari, manman li. Yo mete ajenou devan l', yo adore l'. Apre sa, yo louvri sak yo, yo ba li anpil kado: te gen lò, lansan ak lami.

18 Yo tande yon rèl nan lavil Rama. Yo tande kriye ak gwo anmwe. Se Rachèl k'ap kriye pou pitit li yo. Li pa vle pesonn ba li kouraj, paske pitit li yo mouri.

21 Lamenm Jozèf leve, li pran ti pitit la ansanm ak manman l', li tounen nan peyi Izrayèl la.

22 Men, lè Jozèf vin konnen se Akelayis ki t'ap gouvènen peyi Jide a nan plas Ewòd, papa l', Jozèf te pè ale la. Bondye pale avè l' ankò nan dòmi. Lè sa a, li pati, li ale nan peyi Galile.

23 Li vin rete nan yon vil yo rele Nazarèt. Se konsa, pawòl pwofèt yo te di a rive vre: y'a rele l' moun Nazarèt.

The Magi Visit the Messiah

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea,(A) during the time of King Herod,(B) Magi[a] from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?(C) We saw his star(D) when it rose and have come to worship him.”

When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. “In Bethlehem(E) in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written:

“‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
    are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for out of you will come a ruler
who will shepherd my people Israel.’[b](F)

Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”

After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.(G) Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts(H) of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned(I) in a dream(J) not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

The Escape to Egypt

13 When they had gone, an angel(K) of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream.(L) “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”(M)

14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled(N) what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”[c](O)

16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:(P)

18 “A voice is heard in Ramah,
    weeping and great mourning,
Rachel(Q) weeping for her children
    and refusing to be comforted,
    because they are no more.”[d](R)

The Return to Nazareth

19 After Herod died, an angel(S) of the Lord appeared in a dream(T) to Joseph in Egypt 20 and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.”(U)

21 So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream,(V) he withdrew to the district of Galilee,(W) 23 and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth.(X) So was fulfilled(Y) what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.(Z)

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,

Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.

And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,

And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.

Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.

And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.

When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.

10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh.

12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

13 And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.

14 When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:

15 And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.

16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men.

17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying,

18 In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.

19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

20 Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child's life.

21 And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.

22 But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee:

23 And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.
