25 А Авраам іще взяв жінку, а ймення їй Кетура.
2 А вона породила йому Зімрана, і Йокшана, і Мадана, і Мідіяна, і Їшбака, і Шуаха.
3 А Йокшан породив був Шеву та Дедана. А сини Деданові були: ашшури, і летуші, і леуми.
4 А сини Мідіянові: Ефа, і Ефер, і Ханох, і Авіда, і Елдаа, усі вони сини Кетури.
5 І віддав Авраам усе, що мав, Ісакові.
6 А синам наложниць, що були в Авраама, дав Авраам подарунки, і відіслав їх від Ісака, сина свого, коли сам ще живий був, на схід, до краю східнього.
7 А оце дні літ Авраамового життя, які він прожив: сто літ, і сімдесят літ, і п'ять літ.
8 І спочив та й умер Авраам у старощах добрих, старий і нажившись. І він прилучився до своєї рідні.
9 І поховали його Ісак та Ізмаїл, сини його, у печері Махпелі, на полі Ефрона, сина Цохара хіттеянина, що навпроти Мамре,
10 поле, що його Авраам був купив від синів Хетових, там був похований Авраам і Сарра, жінка його.
11 І сталося по Авраамовій смерті, і поблагословив Бог Ісака, сина його. І осів Ісак при криниці Лахай-Рої.
12 А оце нащадки Ізмаїла, Авраамового сина, що його породила Авраамові єгиптянка Аґар, невільниця Саррина.
13 І оце імена синів Ізмаїла, за їхніми іменами й за нащадками їх: перворідний Ізмаїлів Невайот, і Кедар, і Адбеїл, і Мівсам,
14 І Мішма, і Дума, і Масса,
15 Хадад, і Тема, Єтур, Нафіш, і Кедма.
16 Оце вони, сини Ізмаїлові, і їхні ймення за дворами їх і за їх кочовищами, дванадцять начальників для їхніх племен.
17 А оце літа життя Ізмаїлового: сто літ, і тридцять літ, і сім літ. І спочив та й умер він, і був узятий до своєї рідні.
18 І розложилися вони від Хавіли аж до Шуру, що навпроти Єгипту, як іти до Ашшуру. І він оселився перед усіма своїми братами.
19 А оце оповість про Ісака, Авраамового сина. Авраам породив Ісака.
20 І був Ісак віку сорока літ, як він узяв собі за жінку Ревеку, дочку Бетуїла арамеянина, з Падану арамейського, сестру арамеянина Лавана.
21 І молився Ісак до Господа про жінку свою, бо неплідна була. І Господь був ублаганий ним, і завагітніла Ревека, жінка його.
22 І кидалися діти в утробі її. І сказала вона: Коли так, то для чого я це переношу? І пішла запитатися Господа.
23 І промовив до неї Господь: Два племена в утробі твоїй, і два народи з твого нутра будуть виділені, і стане сильніший народ від народу, і старший молодшому буде служити.
24 І сповнились дні її, щоб родити, і ось близнюки в утробі її.
25 І вийшов перший червонуватий, увесь він немов плащ волосяний. І назвали ймення йому: Ісав.
26 А потім вийшов його брат, а рука його трималася п'яти Ісава. І назвав ім'я йому: Яків. А Ісак був віку шостидесяти літ, коли народились вони.
27 І виросли хлопці. І став Ісав чоловіком, що знався на вловах, чоловіком поля, а Яків чоловіком мирним, що в наметах сидів.
28 І полюбив Ісак Ісава, бо здобич мисливська його йому смакувала, а Ревека любила Якова.
29 І зварив був Ісак їжу, а з поля прибув Ісав, і змучений був.
30 І сказав Ісав до Якова: Нагодуй мене отим червоним, червоним отим, бо змучений я. Тому то назвали ймення йому: Едом.
31 А Яків сказав: Продай же нині мені своє перворідство.
32 І промовив Ісав: Ось я умираю, то нащо ж мені оте перворідство?
33 А Яків сказав: Присягни ж мені нині. І той присягнув йому, і продав перворідство своє Якову.
34 І Яків дав Ісавові хліба й сочевичного варива. А той з'їв, і випив, і встав та й пішов. І знехтував Ісав перворідство своє.
26 І настав був голод у Краю, окрім голоду першого, що був за днів Авраамових. І пішов Ісак до Авімелеха, царя филистимського, до Ґерару.
2 І явився йому Господь і сказав: Не ходи до Єгипту, оселися в землі, про яку Я скажу тобі.
3 Оселися хвилево в землі тій, і Я буду з тобою, і тебе поблагословлю, бо тобі та нащадкам твоїм дам усі оці землі. І Я виконаю присягу, що нею поклявся був Авраамові, батьку твоєму.
4 І розмножу нащадків твоїх, немов зорі на небі, і потомству твоєму Я дам усі оці землі. І поблагословляться в потомстві твоїм усі народи землі,
5 через те, що Авраам послухав Мого голосу, і виконував те, що виконувати Я звелів: заповіді Мої, постанови й закони Мої.
6 І осів Ісак у Ґерарі.
7 І питалися люди тієї місцевости про жінку його. А він відказав: Вона сестра моя, бо боявся сказати: Вона жінка моя, щоб не вбили мене люди тієї місцевости через Ревеку, бо вродлива з обличчя вона.
8 І сталося, коли він там довго жив, і дивився Авімелех, цар филистимський, через вікно, та й побачив, ось Ісак забавляється з Ревекою, жінкою своєю.
9 І покликав Авімелех Ісака та й сказав: Тож оце вона жінка твоя! А як ти сказав був: Вона сестра моя? Ісак же йому відповів: Бо сказав, щоб не вмерти мені через неї!
10 І сказав Авімелех: Що ж то нам учинив ти? Один із народу був мало не ліг із твоєю жінкою, і ти гріх би спровадив на нас!
11 І наказав Авімелех усьому народові, говорячи: Хто доторкнеться цього чоловіка та жінки його, той певно буде забитий.
12 І посіяв Ісак у землі тій, і зібрав того року стокротно, і Господь поблагословив був його.
13 І забагатів оцей чоловік, і багатів усе більше, аж поки не став сильно багатий.
14 І була в нього отара овець та кіз, і череда товару, і багато рабів. І заздрили йому филистимляни.
15 І всі криниці, що їх повикопували раби батька його, за днів батька його Авраама, филистимляни позатикали, і понаповнювали їх землею.
16 І сказав Авімелех Ісакові: Іди ти від нас, бо зробився ти значно сильніший за нас!
17 І пішов Ісак звідти, і в долині Ґерару розтаборився, та й осів там.
18 І знову Ісак повикопував криниці на воду, що їх повикопували були за днів батька його Авраама, а позатикали були їх филистимляни по Авраамовій смерті. І він назвав їм імення, як імення, що батько його був їм назвав.
19 І копали Ісакові раби в долині, і знайшли там криницю живої води.
20 І сварилися пастухи ґерарські з пастухами Ісаковими, кажучи: Це наша вода! І він назвав ім'я для тієї криниці: Есек, бо сварилися з ним.
21 І викопали вони іншу криницю, і сварилися також за неї. І він назвав для неї ім'я: Ситна.
22 І він пересунувся звідти, і викопав іншу криницю, і не сварились за неї. І він назвав для неї ім'я: Реховот, і сказав: Тепер нам поширив Господь, і в Краю ми розмножимось.
23 А звідти піднявся він до Беер-Шеви.
24 І явився йому Господь тієї ночі й сказав: Я Бог Авраама, батька твого; не бійся, бо Я з тобою! І поблагословлю Я тебе, і розмножу нащадків твоїх ради Авраама, Мойого раба.
25 І він збудував там жертівника, і покликав Господнє Ймення. І поставив він там намета свого, а раби Ісакові криницю там викопали.
26 І прийшов до нього з Ґерару Авімелех, і Ахуззат, товариш його, і Піхол, головний начальник війська його.
27 І сказав їм Ісак: Чого ви до мене прийшли? Ви ж зненавиділи мене, і вислали мене від себе.
28 А ті відказали: Ми бачимо справді, що з тобою Господь. І ми сказали: Нехай буде клятва поміж нами, поміж нами й поміж тобою, і складімо умову з тобою,
29 що не вчиниш нам злого, як і ми не торкнулись до тебе, і як ми робили з тобою тільки добро, і тебе відіслали з миром. Ти тепер благословенний від Господа!
30 І він учинив для них гостину, і вони їли й пили.
31 А рано вони повставали, і присягли один одному. І відіслав їх Ісак, і вони пішли від нього з миром.
32 І сталося того дня, і прийшли Ісакові раби, і розказали йому про криницю, яку вони викопали. І сказали йому: Ми воду знайшли!
33 І він назвав її: Шів'а, чому ймення міста того Беер-Шева аж до сьогоднішнього дня.
34 І був Ісав віку сорока літ, і взяв жінку Єгудиту, дочку хіттеянина Беері, і Босмату, дочку хіттеянина Елона.
35 І вони стали гіркотою духа для Ісака й Ревеки.

Авраамові нащадки від Кетури
25 Авраам одружився знову і взяв собі жінку на ім’я Кетура. 2 Вона народила йому Зимрана, Йокшана, Медана, Мидіана, Ішбака та Шуа. 3 Йокшан був батьком Шеби й Дадана. Нащадками Дедана були люди Ашура[a], летуші та леуми. 4 Мидіан мав синів Ефу, Ефера, Ханоха, Авіда і Елдаа. Усі вони були нащадками Кетури.
Смерть Авраама
5 І віддав Авраам усе, що мав, Ісааку. 6 Він також роздав подарунки синам своїх наложниць, і ще за свого життя відіслав їх від свого сина Ісаака у східні землі[b].
7 Прожив Авраам сто сімдесят п’ять років. 8 Авраам зітхнув востаннє й помер у доброму старому віці, після довгого щасливого життя і приєднався до свого народу[c]. 9 Авраамові сини Ісаак та Ізмаїл поховали його в печері Махпела на полі, що належало Ефронові, Зогаровому синові, хиттитові, на схід від Мамре. 10 То було поле, що його Авраам придбав у хиттитів. Там і поховали його разом з жінкою Саррою.
11 Після Авраамової смерті Бог благословив сина його Ісаака. Ісаак оселився поблизу Беер-Лахай-Роя.
Ізмаїлові нащадки
12 Ось родовід Ізмаїла, сина Авраама і єгиптянки Аґар, Сарриної служниці. 13 Такі були імена його синів в порядку їх народження: первістком Ізмаїла був Невайот, за ним Кедар, Авдеел, Мівсам, 14 Мішма, Дума, Масса, 15 Хадад, Тема, Єтур, Нафис та Кедема.
16 Оце сини Ізмаїла, їхні імена, за їхніми селищами й поселеннями. І кожен з дванадцяти став князем у своєму племені.
17 Проживши сто тридцять сім років, Ізмаїл помер і приєднався до свого народу. 18 Ізмаїлові нащадки розселилися від Хавіли до Шура, що на схід від Єгипту по шляху до Ассирії, і часто нападали на своїх сусідів, нащадків братів Ізмаїлових[d].
Ісаакова сім’я
19 Ось родовід Ісаака, Авраамового сина. Авраам був Ісааковим батьком. 20 Коли Ісаакові було сорок років, він узяв собі жінку Ревекку, дочку арамеянина Бетуїла арамійського з Паддан-Арама, сестру Лавана арамійського. 21 Ісаак молився Господу за свою жінку, оскільки вона була неплідна. Господь почув його молитви і його Ревекка завагітніла.
22 Діти штовхалися у неї в животі. І вона питала: «Що це зі мною?» Тоді пішла вона спитатися в Господа. 23 І мовив їй Господь:
«Два племені у череві твоєму,
народи розділилися вже там.
Один міцніший буде за другого,
і старший меншому служитиме».
24 Коли час прийшов, Ревекка народила близнят, двох хлопчиків. 25 Перший народився геть червоний і шкіра його була вкрита волоссям, то й нарекли його Ісавом[e]. 26 За ним народився його брат, міцно тримаючись своєю ручкою за Ісавову п’яту. Його нарекли Яковом[f]. Ісаакові той час було шістдесят років.
27 Хлопчики виросли. Ісав став вправним мисливцем і любив блукати в степу. Яків був тихим, домашнім чоловіком. 28 Ісаак полюбив Ісава, бо до вподоби йому була дичина, яку той приносив. Та Ревекка любила Якова.
29 Якось, коли Яків готував поїсти, Ісав прийшов з полювання виснажений. 30 Ісав і каже Якову: «Дай мені отій червоній страви, бо я виснажений». Через це його називали Едомом[g].
31 Та Яків відповів йому: «Продай мені спочатку своє первородство»[h].
32 Ісав відповів: «Поглянь, я помираю з голоду. Що мені право первородства!» 33 Але Яків наполягав: «Спершу присягни, що поступишся мені своїм первородством!» Тож Ісав присягнув і продав Якову своє право первородства. 34 Тоді Яків дав Ісаву хліба і юшки. Той поїв, попив, а потім устав та й вийшов геть, показавши тим, який він байдужий до свого первородства.
Господнє одкровення Ісааку
26 Настав голод, ще й не такий, як був за життя Авраама. Тож пішов Ісаак до Авімелеха, царя филистимського, в Ґерар.
2 Господь явився йому і промовив: «Не ходи до Єгипту. Лишайся на землі, яку Я вкажу тобі. 3 Живи на цій землі чужинцем, а Я буду з тобою і благословлю тебе, бо Я віддам тобі й твоїм нащадкам усі ці землі. І виконаю Я тоді клятву, якою присягнув твоєму батькові Аврааму. 4 І примножу Я рід твій, і твоїх нащадків буде, як тих зірок у небі. Я віддам їм усі ці землі, і всі народи на землі благословенні будуть через твоїх нащадків. 5 Я зроблю так за те, що Авраам, твій батько, слухав Моє слово і робив так, як Я велів. Він дотримувався Моїх заповідей, законів, Мого вчення».
6 Тож Ісаак залишився в Ґерарі.
Пригода з Ревеккою в Ґерарі
7 Місцеві чоловіки почали розпитувати його про жінку. Ісаак їм відповідав: «Це моя сестра». Він боявся казати, що вона його дружина, думаючи: «Ревекка дуже вродлива, і чоловіки можуть убити мене, щоб заволодіти нею».
8 Ісаак уже жив там довгий час. От одного разу Авімелех, цар филистимський, глянув у вікно і побачив, як Ісаак тішиться зі своєю жінкою Ревеккою. 9 Авімелех покликав Ісаака й каже: «Вона твоя жінка! Як же ти міг сказати, що вона твоя сестра?»
Ісаак йому відповів: «Я боявся, що загину через неї».
10 Тоді Авімелех сказав: «Що ж ти зробив з нами? Адже будь-хто з чоловіків міг лягти з твоєю жінкою, і кара тоді впала б на нас». 11 І дав тоді Авімелех своєму народові такий наказ: «Якщо хтось торкнеться пальцем цього чоловіка чи його жінки, того покарано буде на смерть».
Ісаак стає багатим
12 Того року Ісаак посіяв хліб на тій землі й зібрав гарний врожай. Господь благословив його. 13 Й Ісаак розбагатів. Він усе багатів і багатів, аж доки не став дуже багатий. 14 У нього було багато овець, великої худоби, рабів, і филистимляни почали заздрити йому. 15 Вони позасипали землею всі криниці, що викопали ще слуги Ісаакового батька, Авраама. 16 І сказав тоді Авімелех Ісаакові: «Йди геть від нас, бо став ти значно дужчий за нас».
Вигнання Ісаака
17 Ісаак пішов звідти. Він поставив свої намети в долині Ґерар і став там жити. 18 Він знову повідкопував криниці, що їх було вирито ще за життя його батька Авраама. Бо то филистимляни позасипали їх землею після смерті Авраама. І назвав їх Ісаак так само, як і його батько називав.
19 Ісаакові слуги, копаючи в долині, знайшли живе джерело. 20 Але ґерарські пастухи почали сперечатися із Ісааковими, кажучи: «Це наша вода». І назвав тоді Ісаак ту криницю Есек[i], оскільки вони сварилися з ним.
21 Тоді Ісаакові слуги викопали ще одну криницю. Та місцеві жителі знову почали сваритися за неї. І назвав тоді Ісаак цю криницю Сітна[j].
22 Ісаак пішов звідти й викопав ще одну криницю. І ніхто вже не сварився за неї. І назвав тоді її Ісаак Реговот[k], сказавши: «Нарешті Господь дав і нам простір. Тож будемо множитися й жити на цій землі».
Угода з Авімелехом
23 Ісаак пішов звідти до Беершеби. 24 Тієї ночі Господь явився йому і мовив: «Я Бог твого батька Авраама. Не бійся нічого, бо Я з тобою. Я благословлю тебе і зроблю твій рід численним в ім’я Авраама, Мого слуги».
25 Ісаак спорудив там вівтар, покликав ім’я Господа й поставив свої намети поруч. А слуги його викопали криницю. 26 Прийшов тоді до нього з Ґерара Авімелех зі своїм радником Ахуззатом, а також із воєначальником Фіколом. 27 Ісак спитав їх: «Чого ви до мене прийшли? Ви ж мене ненавидите, ви ж вигнали мене зі своєї землі».
28 А вони відповідають: «Тепер ми ясно бачимо, що Господь з тобою. То ми й подумали, чому б нам не поклястися один перед одним і не укласти Угоду з тобою. 29 Обіцяй, що не заподієш лиха нам, як і ми не заподіяли тобі. Нічого, крім добра, не вчинили ми тобі, лиш відіслали з миром. І тепер тебе Господь благословив».
30 То Ісаак влаштував для них гостину, і вони їли й пили. 31 Вранці вони повставали раненько й дали обіцянку один одному. Ісаак відіслав їх, і ті пішли собі з миром. 32 Того ж дня Ісаакові слуги прийшли до нього й сповістили, що вони викопали криницю, словами: «Ми знайшли воду!» 33 І назвав Ісаак ту криницю Шеба[l]. Тому й місто зветься Беершебою дотепер.
Одруження Ісава
34 Коли Ісаву було сорок років, він одружився з Юдит, дочкою хиттита Беері та Басемат, дочки хиттита Елона. 35 І стали вони джерелом гіркоти для Ісаака й Ревекки.

The Death of Abraham(A)
25 Abraham had taken another wife, whose name was Keturah. 2 She bore him Zimran,(B) Jokshan, Medan, Midian,(C) Ishbak and Shuah.(D) 3 Jokshan was the father of Sheba(E) and Dedan;(F) the descendants of Dedan were the Ashurites, the Letushites and the Leummites. 4 The sons of Midian were Ephah,(G) Epher, Hanok, Abida and Eldaah. All these were descendants of Keturah.
5 Abraham left everything he owned to Isaac.(H) 6 But while he was still living, he gave gifts to the sons of his concubines(I) and sent them away from his son Isaac(J) to the land of the east.(K)
7 Abraham lived a hundred and seventy-five years.(L) 8 Then Abraham breathed his last and died at a good old age,(M) an old man and full of years; and he was gathered to his people.(N) 9 His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him(O) in the cave of Machpelah(P) near Mamre,(Q) in the field of Ephron(R) son of Zohar the Hittite,(S) 10 the field Abraham had bought from the Hittites.[a](T) There Abraham was buried with his wife Sarah. 11 After Abraham’s death, God blessed his son Isaac,(U) who then lived near Beer Lahai Roi.(V)
Ishmael’s Sons(W)
12 This is the account(X) of the family line of Abraham’s son Ishmael, whom Sarah’s slave, Hagar(Y) the Egyptian, bore to Abraham.(Z)
13 These are the names of the sons of Ishmael, listed in the order of their birth: Nebaioth(AA) the firstborn of Ishmael, Kedar,(AB) Adbeel, Mibsam, 14 Mishma, Dumah,(AC) Massa, 15 Hadad, Tema,(AD) Jetur,(AE) Naphish and Kedemah. 16 These were the sons of Ishmael, and these are the names of the twelve tribal rulers(AF) according to their settlements and camps.(AG) 17 Ishmael lived a hundred and thirty-seven years. He breathed his last and died, and he was gathered to his people.(AH) 18 His descendants(AI) settled in the area from Havilah to Shur,(AJ) near the eastern border of Egypt, as you go toward Ashur. And they lived in hostility toward[b] all the tribes related to them.(AK)
Jacob and Esau
19 This is the account(AL) of the family line of Abraham’s son Isaac.
Abraham became the father of Isaac, 20 and Isaac was forty years old(AM) when he married Rebekah(AN) daughter of Bethuel(AO) the Aramean from Paddan Aram[c](AP) and sister of Laban(AQ) the Aramean.(AR)
21 Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was childless.(AS) The Lord answered his prayer,(AT) and his wife Rebekah became pregnant. 22 The babies jostled each other within her, and she said, “Why is this happening to me?” So she went to inquire of the Lord.(AU)
23 The Lord said to her,
“Two nations(AV) are in your womb,
and two peoples from within you will be separated;
one people will be stronger than the other,
and the older will serve the younger.(AW)”
24 When the time came for her to give birth,(AX) there were twin boys in her womb.(AY) 25 The first to come out was red,(AZ) and his whole body was like a hairy garment;(BA) so they named him Esau.[d](BB) 26 After this, his brother came out,(BC) with his hand grasping Esau’s heel;(BD) so he was named Jacob.[e](BE) Isaac was sixty years old(BF) when Rebekah gave birth to them.
27 The boys grew up, and Esau became a skillful hunter,(BG) a man of the open country,(BH) while Jacob was content to stay at home among the tents. 28 Isaac, who had a taste for wild game,(BI) loved Esau, but Rebekah loved Jacob.(BJ)
29 Once when Jacob was cooking some stew,(BK) Esau came in from the open country,(BL) famished. 30 He said to Jacob, “Quick, let me have some of that red stew!(BM) I’m famished!” (That is why he was also called Edom.[f])(BN)
31 Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright.(BO)”
32 “Look, I am about to die,” Esau said. “What good is the birthright to me?”
33 But Jacob said, “Swear(BP) to me first.” So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright(BQ) to Jacob.
34 Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew.(BR) He ate and drank, and then got up and left.
So Esau despised his birthright.
Isaac and Abimelek(BS)
26 Now there was a famine in the land(BT)—besides the previous famine in Abraham’s time—and Isaac went to Abimelek king of the Philistines(BU) in Gerar.(BV) 2 The Lord appeared(BW) to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt;(BX) live in the land where I tell you to live.(BY) 3 Stay in this land for a while,(BZ) and I will be with you(CA) and will bless you.(CB) For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands(CC) and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham.(CD) 4 I will make your descendants(CE) as numerous as the stars in the sky(CF) and will give them all these lands,(CG) and through your offspring[g] all nations on earth will be blessed,[h](CH) 5 because Abraham obeyed me(CI) and did everything I required of him, keeping my commands, my decrees(CJ) and my instructions.(CK)” 6 So Isaac stayed in Gerar.(CL)
7 When the men of that place asked him about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,(CM)” because he was afraid to say, “She is my wife.” He thought, “The men of this place might kill me on account of Rebekah, because she is beautiful.”
8 When Isaac had been there a long time, Abimelek king of the Philistines(CN) looked down from a window and saw Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah. 9 So Abimelek summoned Isaac and said, “She is really your wife! Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’?(CO)”
Isaac answered him, “Because I thought I might lose my life on account of her.”
10 Then Abimelek said, “What is this you have done to us?(CP) One of the men might well have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.”
11 So Abimelek gave orders to all the people: “Anyone who harms(CQ) this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”(CR)
12 Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold,(CS) because the Lord blessed him.(CT) 13 The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy.(CU) 14 He had so many flocks and herds and servants(CV) that the Philistines envied him.(CW) 15 So all the wells(CX) that his father’s servants had dug in the time of his father Abraham, the Philistines stopped up,(CY) filling them with earth.
16 Then Abimelek said to Isaac, “Move away from us;(CZ) you have become too powerful for us.(DA)”
17 So Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar,(DB) where he settled. 18 Isaac reopened the wells(DC) that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and he gave them the same names his father had given them.
19 Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water there. 20 But the herders of Gerar quarreled(DD) with those of Isaac and said, “The water is ours!”(DE) So he named the well Esek,[i] because they disputed with him. 21 Then they dug another well, but they quarreled(DF) over that one also; so he named it Sitnah.[j] 22 He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehoboth,[k](DG) saying, “Now the Lord has given us room(DH) and we will flourish(DI) in the land.”
23 From there he went up to Beersheba.(DJ) 24 That night the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham.(DK) Do not be afraid,(DL) for I am with you;(DM) I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants(DN) for the sake of my servant Abraham.”(DO)
25 Isaac built an altar(DP) there and called on the name of the Lord.(DQ) There he pitched his tent, and there his servants dug a well.(DR)
26 Meanwhile, Abimelek had come to him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his personal adviser and Phicol the commander of his forces.(DS) 27 Isaac asked them, “Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?(DT)”
28 They answered, “We saw clearly that the Lord was with you;(DU) so we said, ‘There ought to be a sworn agreement between us’—between us and you. Let us make a treaty(DV) with you 29 that you will do us no harm,(DW) just as we did not harm you but always treated you well and sent you away peacefully. And now you are blessed by the Lord.”(DX)
30 Isaac then made a feast(DY) for them, and they ate and drank. 31 Early the next morning the men swore an oath(DZ) to each other. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they went away peacefully.
32 That day Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well(EA) they had dug. They said, “We’ve found water!” 33 He called it Shibah,[l] and to this day the name of the town has been Beersheba.[m](EB)
Jacob Takes Esau’s Blessing
34 When Esau was forty years old,(EC) he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and also Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite.(ED) 35 They were a source of grief to Isaac and Rebekah.(EE)

30 And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.

32 And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?
33 And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.

2 And the Lord appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:
3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;
4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;
5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.
6 And Isaac dwelt in Gerar:
7 And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon.
8 And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife.
9 And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife; and how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said unto him, Because I said, Lest I die for her.
10 And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? one of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us.
11 And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.
12 Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the Lord blessed him.
13 And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great:
14 For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants: and the Philistines envied him.
15 For all the wells which his father's servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with earth.
16 And Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go from us; for thou art much mightier than we.
17 And Isaac departed thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.
18 And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them.
19 And Isaac's servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water.
20 And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaac's herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they strove with him.
21 And they digged another well, and strove for that also: and he called the name of it Sitnah.
22 And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the Lord hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.
23 And he went up from thence to Beersheba.
24 And the Lord appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham's sake.
25 And he builded an altar there, and called upon the name of the Lord, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac's servants digged a well.
26 Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath one of his friends, and Phichol the chief captain of his army.
27 And Isaac said unto them, Wherefore come ye to me, seeing ye hate me, and have sent me away from you?
28 And they said, We saw certainly that the Lord was with thee: and we said, Let there be now an oath betwixt us, even betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee;
29 That thou wilt do us no hurt, as we have not touched thee, and as we have done unto thee nothing but good, and have sent thee away in peace: thou art now the blessed of the Lord.
30 And he made them a feast, and they did eat and drink.
31 And they rose up betimes in the morning, and sware one to another: and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.
32 And it came to pass the same day, that Isaac's servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had digged, and said unto him, We have found water.
33 And he called it Shebah: therefore the name of the city is Beersheba unto this day.
34 And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite:
35 Which were a grief of mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah.
