And Shecaniah the son of Jehiel, of the sons of Elam, addressed Ezra: (A)“We have broken faith with our God and have married foreign women from the peoples of the land, but even now there is hope for Israel in spite of this. Therefore (B)let us make a covenant with our God to put away all these wives and (C)their children, according to the counsel of my lord[a] and of (D)those who tremble at the commandment of our God, and let it be done (E)according to the Law. Arise, for it is your task, and we are with you; (F)be strong and do it.” Then Ezra arose and made the leading priests and Levites and all Israel (G)take an oath that they would do as had been said. So they took the oath.

Then Shekaniah son of Jehiel, one of the descendants of Elam,(A) said to Ezra, “We have been unfaithful(B) to our God by marrying foreign women from the peoples around us. But in spite of this, there is still hope for Israel.(C) Now let us make a covenant(D) before our God to send away(E) all these women and their children, in accordance with the counsel of my lord and of those who fear the commands of our God. Let it be done according to the Law. Rise up; this matter is in your hands. We will support you, so take courage and do it.”

So Ezra rose up and put the leading priests and Levites and all Israel under oath(F) to do what had been suggested. And they took the oath.
