and He said to him, ‘(A)Go from your country and your relatives, and come to the land which I will show you.’ (B)Then he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in [a]Haran. And (C)from there, after his father died, God had him move to this country in which you are now living. But He gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot of ground, and yet, (D)He promised that He would give it to him as a possession, and to his descendants after him, even though he had no child. But (E)God spoke to this effect, that his descendants would be strangers in a land that was not theirs, and [b]they would enslave and mistreat them for four hundred years. And whatever nation to which they are enslaved I Myself will judge,’ said God, ‘and (F)after that they will come out and [c]serve Me in this place.’ And He (G)gave him [d]the covenant of circumcision; and so (H)Abraham fathered Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day; and (I)Isaac fathered Jacob, and (J)Jacob, the twelve (K)patriarchs.

“The patriarchs (L)became jealous of Joseph and sold him into Egypt. Yet God was with him, 10 and rescued him from all his afflictions, and (M)granted him favor and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and he made him governor over Egypt and his entire household.

11 “Now (N)a famine came over all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction with it, and our fathers [e]could find no food. 12 But (O)when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our fathers there the first time. 13 And on the second visit, (P)Joseph [f]made himself known to his brothers, and (Q)Joseph’s family was revealed to Pharaoh. 14 Then (R)Joseph sent word and invited his father Jacob and all his relatives to come to him, (S)seventy-five [g](T)people in all. 15 And (U)Jacob went down to Egypt, and he and our fathers died there. 16 And they were brought back from there to [h](V)Shechem and laid in the tomb which Abraham had purchased for a sum of money from the sons of [i]Hamor in [j]Shechem.

17 “But as the (W)time of the promise which God had assured to Abraham was approaching, (X)the people increased and multiplied in Egypt, 18 until (Y)another king arose over Egypt who did not know Joseph. 19 It was he who (Z)shrewdly took advantage of our nation and mistreated our fathers in order that they would (AA)abandon their infants in the Nile, so that they would not survive. 20 At this time (AB)Moses was born; and he was beautiful to God. He was nurtured for three months in his father’s home. 21 And after he had been put outside, (AC)Pharaoh’s daughter [k]took him away and nurtured him as her own son. 22 Moses was educated in all (AD)the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was proficient in [l]speaking and action. 23 But when he was approaching the age of forty, (AE)it entered his [m]mind to visit his countrymen, the sons of Israel. 24 And when he saw one of them being treated unjustly, he defended and took vengeance for the oppressed man by fatally striking the Egyptian. 25 And he thought that his brothers understood that God was granting them [n]deliverance [o]through him; but they did not understand. 26 (AF)And on the following day he appeared to them as they were fighting each other, and he tried to reconcile them to peace, by saying, ‘Men, you are brothers, why are you injuring each other?’ 27 But the one who was injuring his neighbor pushed him away, saying, ‘(AG)Who made you a ruler and judge over us? 28 (AH)You do not intend to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday, do you?’ 29 At this remark, (AI)Moses fled and became a stranger in the land of [p]Midian, where he (AJ)fathered two sons.

30 “After forty years had passed, (AK)an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in the flame of a burning thorn bush. 31 When Moses saw it, he was astonished at the sight; and as he approached to look more closely, the voice of the Lord came: 32 (AL)I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob.’ Moses shook with fear and did not dare to look closely. 33 (AM)But the Lord said to him, ‘[q](AN)Remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground. 34 (AO)I have certainly seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their groaning, and I have come down to rescue them; and (AP)now come, I will send you to Egypt.’

35 “This Moses whom they (AQ)disowned, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’ is the one whom God [r]sent to be both a ruler and a deliverer with the [s]help of the angel who appeared to him in the thorn bush. 36 (AR)This man led them out, performing (AS)wonders and [t]signs in the land of Egypt and in the Red Sea, and in the (AT)wilderness for forty years.

‘Leave your country and your people,’ God said, ‘and go to the land I will show you.’[a](A)

“So he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Harran. After the death of his father, God sent him to this land where you are now living.(B) He gave him no inheritance here,(C) not even enough ground to set his foot on. But God promised him that he and his descendants after him would possess the land,(D) even though at that time Abraham had no child. God spoke to him in this way: ‘For four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated.(E) But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves,’ God said, ‘and afterward they will come out of that country and worship me in this place.’[b](F) Then he gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision.(G) And Abraham became the father of Isaac and circumcised him eight days after his birth.(H) Later Isaac became the father of Jacob,(I) and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs.(J)

“Because the patriarchs were jealous of Joseph,(K) they sold him as a slave into Egypt.(L) But God was with him(M) 10 and rescued him from all his troubles. 17 “As the time drew near for God to fulfill his promise to Abraham, the number of our people in Egypt had greatly increased.(W) 18 Then ‘a new king, to whom Joseph meant nothing, came to power in Egypt.’[c](X) 19 He dealt treacherously with our people and oppressed our ancestors by forcing them to throw out their newborn babies so that they would die.(Y)

20 “At that time Moses was born, and he was no ordinary child.[d] For three months he was cared for by his family.(Z) 21 When he was placed outside, Pharaoh’s daughter took him and brought him up as her own son.(AA) 22 Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians(AB) and was powerful in speech and action.

23 “When Moses was forty years old, he decided to visit his own people, the Israelites. 24 He saw one of them being mistreated by an Egyptian, so he went to his defense and avenged him by killing the Egyptian. 25 Moses thought that his own people would realize that God was using him to rescue them, but they did not. 26 The next day Moses came upon two Israelites who were fighting. He tried to reconcile them by saying, ‘Men, you are brothers; why do you want to hurt each other?’

27 “But the man who was mistreating the other pushed Moses aside and said, ‘Who made you ruler and judge over us?(AC) 28 Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’[e] 29 When Moses heard this, he fled to Midian, where he settled as a foreigner and had two sons.(AD)

30 “After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to Moses in the flames of a burning bush in the desert near Mount Sinai. 31 When he saw this, he was amazed at the sight. As he went over to get a closer look, he heard the Lord say:(AE) 32 ‘I am the God of your fathers,(AF) the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.’[f] Moses trembled with fear and did not dare to look.(AG)

33 “Then the Lord said to him, ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.(AH) 34 I have indeed seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their groaning and have come down to set them free. Now come, I will send you back to Egypt.’[g](AI)

35 “This is the same Moses they had rejected with the words, ‘Who made you ruler and judge?’(AJ) He was sent to be their ruler and deliverer by God himself, through the angel who appeared to him in the bush. 36 He led them out of Egypt(AK) and performed wonders and signs(AL) in Egypt, at the Red Sea(AM) and for forty years in the wilderness.(AN)

And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee.

Then came he out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell.

And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.

And God spake on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into bondage, and entreat them evil four hundred years.

And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this place.

And he gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs.

And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him,

10 And delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

11 Now there came a dearth over all the land of Egypt and Chanaan, and great affliction: and our fathers found no sustenance.

12 But when Jacob heard that there was corn in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first.

13 And at the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren; and Joseph's kindred was made known unto Pharaoh.

14 Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to him, and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls.

15 So Jacob went down into Egypt, and died, he, and our fathers,

16 And were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulchre that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the father of Sychem.

17 But when the time of the promise drew nigh, which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,

18 Till another king arose, which knew not Joseph.

19 The same dealt subtilly with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live.

20 In which time Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father's house three months:

21 And when he was cast out, Pharaoh's daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.

22 And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.

23 And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.

24 And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian:

25 For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not.

26 And the next day he shewed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another?

27 But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?

28 Wilt thou kill me, as thou diddest the Egyptian yesterday?

29 Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons.

30 And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.

31 When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the Lord came unto him,

32 Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold.

33 Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground.

34 I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.

35 This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush.

36 He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.
