The Tower of Babel

11 Now the whole world had one language^(A) and a common speech.

¹⁸ In that day^(A) five cities^(B) in Egypt will speak the language of Canaan and swear allegiance^(C) to the Lord Almighty. One of them will be called the City of the Sun.^[a](D)

⁴ All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit^(A) and began to speak in other tongues^[a](B) as the Spirit enabled them.

⁵ Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing^(C) Jews from every nation under heaven. ⁶ When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. ⁷ Utterly amazed,^(D) they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans?^{(E) 8} Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? ⁹ Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia,^(F) Pontus^(G) and Asia,^{[b](H) 10} Phrygia^(I) and Pamphylia,^(J) Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene;^(K) visitors from Rome ¹¹ (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” ¹² Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”

¹³ Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”^(L)

²⁰ This is what the Lord Almighty says: “Many peoples and the inhabitants of many cities will yet come, ²¹ and the inhabitants of one city will go to another and say, ‘Let us go at once to entreat^(A) the Lord and seek^(B) the Lord Almighty. I myself am going.’ ²² And many peoples and powerful nations will come to Jerusalem to seek the Lord Almighty and to entreat him.”^(C)

²³ This is what the Lord Almighty says: “In those days ten people from all languages and nations will take firm hold of one Jew by the hem of his robe and say, ‘Let us go with you, because we have heard that God is with you.’”^(D)

¹¹ “Many nations will be joined with the Lord in that day and will become my people.^(A) I will live among you and you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me to you.^(B)
