Judgment on the Whole Earth in the Day of the Lord

¹⁶ ‘This is what the Lord says: I am going to bring disaster^(A) on this place and its people, according to everything written in the book^(B) the king of Judah has read. ¹⁷ Because they have forsaken^(C) me and burned incense to other gods and aroused my anger by all the idols their hands have made,^[a] my anger will burn against this place and will not be quenched.’

²⁷ “Say this to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: As surely as I live, those who are left in the ruins will fall by the sword, those out in the country I will give to the wild animals to be devoured, and those in strongholds and caves will die of a plague.^{(A) 28} I will make the land a desolate waste, and her proud strength will come to an end, and the mountains^(B) of Israel will become desolate so that no one will cross them.^{(C) 29} Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I have made the land a desolate^(D) waste because of all the detestable things they have done.’^(E)

²⁹ Also tell Jehoiakim king of Judah, ‘This is what the Lord says: You burned that scroll and said, “Why did you write on it that the king of Babylon would certainly come and destroy this land and wipe from it^(A) both man and beast?”^(B)

²² I am going to give the order, declares the Lord, and I will bring them back to this city. They will fight against it, take^(A) it and burn^(B) it down. And I will lay waste^(C) the towns of Judah so no one can live there.”

⁸ “‘But like the bad^(A) figs, which are so bad they cannot be eaten,’ says the Lord, ‘so will I deal with Zedekiah^(B) king of Judah, his officials^(C) and the survivors^(D) from Jerusalem, whether they remain in this land or live in Egypt.^{(E) 9} I will make them abhorrent^(F) and an offense to all the kingdoms of the earth, a reproach and a byword,^(G) a curse^[a](H) and an object of ridicule, wherever I banish^(I) them. ¹⁰ I will send the sword,^(J) famine^(K) and plague^(L) against them until they are destroyed from the land I gave to them and their ancestors.^(M)’”

⁹ This is what the Lord Almighty says:

¹¹ Then I said, “For how long, Lord?”^(A)
