9 The burden of the Devar Hashem against Eretz Chadrach, and Damascus its menuchah (resting place); for toward Hashem shall be the eyes of man as of Kol Shivtei Yisroel (all the tribes of Israel).

²And Chamat at its border; Tzor and Tzidon, though it be very wise.

³And Tzor did build herself a matzor (stronghold), and heaped up kesef like the dust, and fine gold like the mire of the streets.

⁴Hinei, Adonoi will cause it to be taken, and He will strike her power on the yam; and she shall be devoured with eish.

⁵Ashkelon shall see it, and fear; Azah (Gaza) also shall see it, and tremble greatly, and Ekron; for her hope shall be put to shame; and Melech shall perish out of Azah (Gaza), and Ashkelon shall not be inhabited.

⁶And mamzer shall dwell in Ashdod, and I will cut off the ga’on (pride) of the Pelishtim (Philistines).

⁷And I will take away his dahm out of his mouth, and his abominations from between his teeth; but he will also remain to Eloheinu, and he shall be as a tribe prince in Yehudah, and Ekron like the Yevusi (Jebusite).

⁸And I will encamp about Mine Bais against military power, because of him that goes maurading to and fro; and no oppressor shall pass through them any more; for now I am keeping watch with Mine eyes.

⁹Rejoice greatly, O Bat Tziyon; shout, O Bat Yerushalayim; hinei, thy Melech cometh unto thee, tzaddik, and having Salvation; ani (lowly, meek), and riding upon a chamor, even upon a colt the foal of a donkey. [Mt 21:5; Yn 12:15]

¹⁰And I will cut off the chariot from Ephrayim, and the war horse from Yerushalayim, and the battle bow shall be cut off. He shall proclaim shalom unto the Goyim; and His [Moshiach’s] dominion shall be from yam even to yam, and from the [Euphrates] river even to the ends of ha’aretz.

¹¹As for thee also, by the dahm of thy Brit I release thy prisoners out of the pit wherein is no mayim [T.N. Notice the blood of the Covenent is essential to Israel’s Orthodox faith].

¹²Return to the stronghold, ye prisoners of tikvah (hope); even today do I proclaim that I will repay double unto thee;

¹³I will bend Yehudah as I bend My keshet (bow), fill it with Ephrayim, and I will rouse thy banim, O Tziyon, against thy banim, O Yavan (Greece), and make thee like the cherev (sword) of a gibbor (mighty man).

¹⁴And Hashem shall be seen over them, and his arrow shall go forth as the lightning; and Adonoi Hashem shall sound the shofar, and shall march forth with storms of the south.

¹⁵Hashem Tzva’os shall shield them; and they shall devour, and subdue with sling stones; and they shall drink, and shall roar as through yayin; and they shall be full like a bowl, like the corners of the mizbe’ach.

¹⁶And Hashem Eloheihem shall save them in Yom HaHu as the tzon of His people; for they shall be as the jewels of a crown, sparkling in His land.

¹⁷For how great is its goodness, and how great is its beauty! Grain shall make the bochurim thrive, and tirosh, the betulot.

Judgment on Israel’s Enemies

9 A prophecy:^(A)

The word of the Lord is against the land of Hadrak
    and will come to rest on Damascus^(B)—
for the eyes of all people and all the tribes of Israel
    are on the Lord—^[a]
²and on Hamath^(C) too, which borders on it,
    and on Tyre^(D) and Sidon,^(E) though they are very skillful.
³Tyre has built herself a stronghold;
    she has heaped up silver like dust,
    and gold like the dirt of the streets.^(F)
⁴But the Lord will take away her possessions
    and destroy^(G) her power on the sea,
    and she will be consumed by fire.^(H)
⁵Ashkelon^(I) will see it and fear;
    Gaza will writhe in agony,
    and Ekron too, for her hope will wither.
Gaza will lose her king
    and Ashkelon will be deserted.
⁶A mongrel people will occupy Ashdod,
    and I will put an end^(J) to the pride of the Philistines.
⁷I will take the blood from their mouths,
    the forbidden food from between their teeth.
Those who are left will belong to our God^(K)
    and become a clan in Judah,
    and Ekron will be like the Jebusites.^(L)
⁸But I will encamp^(M) at my temple
    to guard it against marauding forces.^(N)
Never again will an oppressor overrun my people,
    for now I am keeping watch.^(O)

The Coming of Zion’s King

⁹Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!^(P)
    Shout,^(Q) Daughter Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,^(R)
    righteous and victorious,^(S)
lowly and riding on a donkey,^(T)
    on a colt, the foal of a donkey.^(U)
¹⁰I will take away the chariots from Ephraim
    and the warhorses from Jerusalem,
    and the battle bow will be broken.^(V)
He will proclaim peace^(W) to the nations.
    His rule will extend from sea to sea
    and from the River^[b] to the ends of the earth.^(X)
¹¹As for you, because of the blood of my covenant^(Y) with you,
    I will free your prisoners^(Z) from the waterless pit.^(AA)
¹²Return to your fortress,^(AB) you prisoners of hope;
    even now I announce that I will restore twice^(AC) as much to you.
¹³I will bend Judah as I bend my bow^(AD)
    and fill it with Ephraim.^(AE)
I will rouse your sons, Zion,
    against your sons, Greece,^(AF)
    and make you like a warrior’s sword.^(AG)

The Lord Will Appear

¹⁴Then the Lord will appear over them;^(AH)
    his arrow will flash like lightning.^(AI)
The Sovereign Lord will sound the trumpet;^(AJ)
    he will march in the storms^(AK) of the south,
¹⁵    and the Lord Almighty will shield^(AL) them.
They will destroy
    and overcome with slingstones.^(AM)
They will drink and roar as with wine;^(AN)
    they will be full like a bowl^(AO)
    used for sprinkling^[c] the corners^(AP) of the altar.
¹⁶The Lord their God will save his people on that day^(AQ)
    as a shepherd saves his flock.
They will sparkle in his land
    like jewels in a crown.^(AR)
¹⁷How attractive and beautiful they will be!
    Grain will make the young men thrive,
    and new wine the young women.

9 The oracle of the word of the Lord is against the land of Hadrach
    and ^(A)Damascus is its resting place.
For the Lord has an eye on mankind
    and on all the tribes of Israel,^[a]
²^(B)and on Hamath also, which borders on it,
    ^(C)Tyre and ^(D)Sidon, though ^(E)they are very wise.
³Tyre has built herself ^(F)a rampart
    and ^(G)heaped up silver like dust,
    and fine gold like the mud of the streets.
⁴But behold, the Lord will strip her of her possessions
    and strike down ^(H)her power on the sea,
    and ^(I)she shall be devoured by fire.

⁵^(J)Ashkelon shall see it, and be afraid;
    Gaza too, and shall writhe in anguish;
    Ekron also, because its hopes are confounded.
The king shall perish from Gaza;
    Ashkelon shall be uninhabited;
⁶^(K)a mixed people^[b] shall dwell in Ashdod,
    and I will cut off the pride of Philistia.
⁷I will take away ^(L)its blood from its mouth,
    and ^(M)its abominations from between its teeth;
^(N)it too shall be a remnant for our God;
    it shall be like ^(O)a clan in Judah,
    and Ekron shall be like the Jebusites.
⁸Then ^(P)I will encamp at my house as a guard,
    ^(Q)so that none shall march to and fro;
^(R)no oppressor shall again march over them,
    ^(S)for now I see with my own eyes.

The Coming King of Zion

⁹^(T)Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
    Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!
^(U)Behold, ^(V)your king is coming to you;
    righteous and having salvation is he,
^(W)humble and mounted on a donkey,
    on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
¹⁰^(X)I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim
    and ^(Y)the war horse from Jerusalem;
and the battle bow shall be cut off,
    and ^(Z)he shall speak peace to the nations;
^(AA)his rule shall be from sea to sea,
    and from ^(AB)the River^[c] to the ends of the earth.
¹¹As for you also, because of ^(AC)the blood of my covenant with you,
    ^(AD)I will set your prisoners free from ^(AE)the waterless pit.
¹²Return to your stronghold, O ^(AF)prisoners of hope;
    today I declare that ^(AG)I will restore to you double.
¹³For ^(AH)I have bent Judah as my bow;
    I have made Ephraim its arrow.
I will stir up your sons, O Zion,

The Lord Will Save His People

¹⁴Then the Lord will appear over them,
    and ^(AJ)his arrow will go forth like lightning;
^(AK)the Lord God will sound the trumpet
    and will march forth in ^(AL)the whirlwinds ^(AM)of the south.
¹⁵The Lord of hosts ^(AN)will protect them,
    and ^(AO)they shall devour, ^(AP)and tread down the sling stones,
and ^(AQ)they shall drink and roar as if drunk with wine,
    and be full like a bowl,
    drenched ^(AR)like the corners of the altar.

¹⁶On that day the Lord their God will save them,
    as ^(AS)the flock of his people;
for ^(AT)like the jewels of a crown
    they shall shine on his land.
¹⁷^(AU)For how great is his goodness, and how great his beauty!
    ^(AV)Grain shall make the young men flourish,
    and new wine the young women.

¹The burden of the word of the Lord in the land of ^[a]Hadrach: and Damascus shall be his ^[b]rest: when the ^[c]eyes of man, even of all the tribes of Israel shall be toward the Lord.

²And Hamath also shall border ^[d]thereby: Tyre also and Sidon, though they be ^[e]very wise.

³For Tyre did build herself a stronghold, and heaped up silver as the dust, and gold as the mire of the streets.

⁴Behold, the Lord will spoil her, and he will smite her ^[f]power in the sea, and she shall be devoured with fire.

⁵Ashkelon shall see it, and fear, and Gaza also shall be very sorrowful, and Ekron: for her countenance shall be ashamed, and the king shall perish from Gaza, and Ashkelon shall not be inhabited.

⁶And the ^[g]stranger shall dwell in Ashdod, and I will cut off the pride of the Philistines.

⁷And I will take away his blood out of his mouth, and his abominations from between his ^[h]teeth: but he that remaineth, even he shall be for our God, and he shall be as a prince in Judah, but ^[i]Ekron shall be as a Jebusite.

⁸And I will camp about ^[j]mine House against the army, against him that passeth by, and against him that returneth, and no oppressor shall come upon them anymore: for now ^[k]have I seen with mine eyes.

⁹Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion: shout for joy, O daughter Jerusalem: behold, thy king cometh unto thee: ^[l]he is just, and saved himself, poor and riding upon an ^[m]ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

¹⁰And I will cut off the ^[n]chariots from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem: the bow of the battle shall be broken, and he shall speak peace unto the heathen, and his dominion shall be from ^[o]sea unto sea, and from the ^[p]River to the end of the land.

¹¹^[q]Thou also shall be saved through the blood of thy covenant. I have loosed thy ^[r]prisoners out of the pit wherein is no water.

¹²Turn you to the ^[s]stronghold, ye ^[t]prisoners of hope: even today do I declare, that I will render the ^[u]double unto thee.

¹³For Judah have I bent as a ^[v]bow for me: Ephraim’s hand have I filled, and I have raised up thy sons, O Zion, against thy sons, O Greece, and have made thee as a giant’s sword.

¹⁴And the Lord shall be seen over them, and his arrow shall go forth as the lightning: and the Lord God shall blow the trumpet, and shall come forth with the whirlwinds of the South.

¹⁵The Lord of hosts shall defend them, and they shall devour them, ^[w]and subdue them with sling stones, and they shall drink, and make a noise as through wine, and they shall be filled like bowls, and as the horns of the Altar.

¹⁶And the Lord their God shall deliver them in that day as the flock of his people: for they shall be as the ^[x]stones of the crown lifted up upon his land.

¹⁷For how great is his goodness! and how great is his beauty! corn shall make the young men cheerful, and new wine the maids.

Zechariah 9:10 No power of man or creature shall be able to let this kingdom of Christ, and he shall peaceably govern them by his word.
Zechariah 9:10 That is, from the red sea, to the sea, called Syriacum: and by these places which the Jews knew, he meant an infinite space and compass over the whole world.

Zechariah 9:11 Meaning, Jerusalem, or the Church which is saved by the blood of Christ whereof the blood of the sacrifices was a figure, and is here called the covenant of the Church, because God made it with his Church: and left it with them for the love that he bare unto them.
Zechariah 9:11 God showeth that he will deliver his Church out of all dangers, seem they never so great.
Zechariah 9:12 That is, into the holy land where the city and the Temple are, where God will defend you.
Zechariah 9:12 Meaning the faithful, which seemed to be in danger of their enemies on every side, and yet lived in hope that God would restore them to liberty.
Zechariah 9:12 That is, double benefits and prosperity, in respect of that which your fathers enjoined from David’s time to the captivity.
Zechariah 9:13 I will make Judah and Ephraim, that is, my whole Church, victorious against all enemies, which he here meaneth by the Greecians.
Zechariah 9:15 He promiseth that the Jews shall destroy their enemies, and have abundance and excess of all things, as there is abundance on the altar when the sacrifice is offered: Which things are not to move them to intemperancy, but to sobriety, and a thankful remembrance of God’s great liberality.
Zechariah 9:16 The faithful shall be preserved, and reverenced of all, that the very enemies shall be compelled to esteem them: for God’s glory shall shine in them, as Josephus declareth of Alexander the great when he met Jadi the high Priest.
