A Call to Repentance
1 In the eighth month of the second year of (A)Darius, the word of the Lord came to (B)Zechariah the prophet, the son of Berechiah, the son of (C)Iddo saying, 2 “The Lord was very (D)angry with your fathers. 3 Therefore say to them, ‘This is what the Lord of armies says: “(E)Return to Me,” declares the Lord of armies, “[a]that I may return to you,” says the Lord of armies. 4 “Do not be (F)like your fathers, to whom the (G)former prophets proclaimed, saying, ‘This is what the Lord of armies says: “(H)Return now from your evil ways and from your evil deeds.”’ But they did (I)not listen or pay attention to Me,” declares the Lord. 5 “Your (J)fathers, where are they? And the (K)prophets, do they live forever? 6 But did My words and My statutes, which I commanded My servants the prophets, not [b](L)overtake your fathers? Then they repented and said, ‘(M)Just as the Lord of armies planned to do to us in accordance with our ways and our deeds, so He has dealt with us.’”’”
Patrol of the Earth
7 On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, that is, the month Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to Zechariah the prophet, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo, [c]as follows: 8 I saw at night, and behold, a man was riding on a (N)red horse, and he was standing among the (O)myrtle trees which were in the ravine, with red, [d]sorrel, and (P)white horses behind him. 9 Then I said, “What are these, my (Q)lord?” And the (R)angel who was speaking with me said to me, “I will show you what these are.” 10 And the man who was standing among the myrtle trees responded and said, “These are the ones whom the Lord has sent to [e](S)patrol the earth.” 11 So they responded to the angel of the Lord who was (T)standing among the myrtle trees and said, “We have [f]patrolled the earth, and behold, (U)all the earth is [g]still and quiet.”
12 Then the angel of the Lord said, “Lord of armies, (V)how long will You (W)take no pity on Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, with which You have been (X)indignant for these (Y)seventy years?” 13 And the Lord responded to the (Z)angel who was speaking with me with [h]gracious words, (AA)comforting words. 14 So the angel who was speaking with me said to me, “(AB)Proclaim, saying, ‘This is what the Lord of armies says: “I am (AC)exceedingly jealous for Jerusalem and Zion. 15 But I am very (AD)angry with the nations who are (AE)carefree; for while I was only a little angry, they [i](AF)furthered the disaster.” 16 Therefore the Lord says this: “I will (AG)return to Jerusalem with compassion; My (AH)house will be built in it,” declares the Lord of armies, “and a measuring (AI)line will be stretched over Jerusalem.”’ 17 Again, proclaim, saying, ‘This is what the Lord of armies says: “My (AJ)cities will again overflow with prosperity, and the Lord will again (AK)comfort Zion and again (AL)choose Jerusalem.”’”
18 [j]Then I raised my eyes and looked, and behold, there were four horns. 19 So I said to the angel who was speaking with me, “What are these?” And he said to me, “These are the (AM)horns that have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.” 20 Then the Lord showed me four (AN)craftsmen. 21 And I said, “What are these coming to do?” And he said, “These are the (AO)horns that have scattered Judah so that no one lifts up his head; but these craftsmen have come to frighten them, to (AP)throw down the horns of the nations who have lifted up their horns against the land of Judah in order to scatter it.”

1 Nell'ottavo mese dell'anno secondo del regno di Dario, fu rivolta questa parola del Signore al profeta Zaccaria figlio di Barachia, figlio di Iddò: 2 «Il Signore si è molto sdegnato contro i vostri padri. 3 Tu dunque riferirai loro: Così parla il Signore degli eserciti: Convertitevi a me - oracolo del Signore degli eserciti - e io mi rivolgerò a voi, dice il Signore degli eserciti. 4 Non siate come i vostri padri, ai quali i profeti di un tempo andavan gridando: Dice il Signore degli eserciti: Tornate indietro dal vostro cammino perverso e dalle vostre opere malvage. Ma essi non vollero ascoltare e non mi prestarono attenzione, dice il Signore. 5 Dove sono i vostri padri? Iprofeti forse vivranno sempre? 6 Le parole e i decreti che io avevo comunicato ai miei servi, i profeti, non si sono forse adempiuti sui padri vostri? Essi si sono convertiti e hanno detto: Quanto il Signore degli eserciti ci aveva minacciato a causa dei nostri traviamenti e delle nostre colpe, l'ha eseguito sopra di noi».
Prima visione: i cavalieri
7 Il ventiquattro dell'undecimo mese, cioè il mese di Sebàt, l'anno secondo di Dario, questa parola del Signore si manifestò al profeta Zaccaria, figlio di Iddò. 8 Io ebbi una visione di notte. Un uomo, in groppa a un cavallo rosso, stava fra i mirti in una valle profonda; dietro a lui stavano altri cavalli rossi, sauri e bianchi. 9 Io domandai: «Mio signore, che significano queste cose?». L'angelo che parlava con me mi rispose: «Io t'indicherò ciò che esse significano». 10 Allora l'uomo che stava fra i mirti prese a dire: «Essi sono coloro che il Signore ha inviati a percorrere la terra». 11 Si rivolsero infatti all'angelo del Signore che stava fra i mirti e gli dissero: «Abbiamo percorso la terra: è tutta tranquilla». 12 Allora l'angelo del Signore disse: «Signore degli eserciti, fino a quando rifiuterai di aver pietà di Gerusalemme e delle città di Giuda, contro le quali sei sdegnato? Sono ormai settant'anni!». 13 E all'angelo che parlava con me il Signore rivolse parole buone, piene di conforto. 14 Poi l'angelo che parlava con me mi disse: «Fà sapere questo: Così dice il Signore degli eserciti: Io sono ingelosito per Gerusalemme e per Sion di gelosia grande; 15 ma ardo di sdegno contro le nazioni superbe, poiché mentre io ero un poco sdegnato, esse cooperarono al disastro. 16 Perciò dice il Signore: Io di nuovo mi volgo con compassione a Gerusalemme: la mia casa vi sarà riedificata - parola del Signore degli eserciti - e la corda del muratore sarà tesa di nuovo sopra Gerusalemme. 17 Fà sapere anche questo: Così dice il Signore degli eserciti: Le mie città avranno sovrabbondanza di beni, il Signore avrà ancora compassione di Sion ed eleggerà di nuovo Gerusalemme».

A Call to Return to the Lord
1 In the eighth month of the second year of Darius,(A) the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah(B) son of Berekiah,(C) the son of Iddo:(D)
2 “The Lord was very angry(E) with your ancestors. 3 Therefore tell the people: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Return(F) to me,’ declares the Lord Almighty, ‘and I will return to you,’(G) says the Lord Almighty. 4 Do not be like your ancestors,(H) to whom the earlier prophets(I) proclaimed: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Turn from your evil ways(J) and your evil practices.’ But they would not listen or pay attention to me,(K) declares the Lord.(L) 5 Where are your ancestors now? And the prophets, do they live forever? 6 But did not my words(M) and my decrees, which I commanded my servants the prophets, overtake your ancestors?(N)
“Then they repented and said, ‘The Lord Almighty has done to us what our ways and practices deserve,(O) just as he determined to do.’”(P)
The Man Among the Myrtle Trees
7 On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, the month of Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berekiah, the son of Iddo.(Q)
8 During the night I had a vision, and there before me was a man mounted on a red(R) horse. He was standing among the myrtle trees in a ravine. Behind him were red, brown and white horses.(S)
9 I asked, “What are these, my lord?”
The angel(T) who was talking with me answered, “I will show you what they are.”(U)
10 Then the man standing among the myrtle trees explained, “They are the ones the Lord has sent to go throughout the earth.”(V)
11 And they reported to the angel of the Lord(W) who was standing among the myrtle trees, “We have gone throughout the earth and found the whole world at rest and in peace.”(X)
12 Then the angel of the Lord said, “Lord Almighty, how long(Y) will you withhold mercy(Z) from Jerusalem and from the towns of Judah,(AA) which you have been angry with these seventy(AB) years?” 13 So the Lord spoke(AC) kind and comforting words(AD) to the angel who talked with me.(AE)
14 Then the angel who was speaking to me said, “Proclaim this word: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘I am very jealous(AF) for Jerusalem and Zion, 15 and I am very angry with the nations that feel secure.(AG) I was only a little angry,(AH) but they went too far with the punishment.’(AI)
16 “Therefore this is what the Lord says: ‘I will return(AJ) to Jerusalem with mercy, and there my house will be rebuilt. And the measuring line(AK) will be stretched out over Jerusalem,’ declares the Lord Almighty.(AL)
17 “Proclaim further: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘My towns will again overflow with prosperity, and the Lord will again comfort(AM) Zion and choose(AN) Jerusalem.’”(AO)
Four Horns and Four Craftsmen
18 Then I looked up, and there before me were four horns. 19 I asked the angel who was speaking to me, “What are these?”
He answered me, “These are the horns(AP) that scattered Judah, Israel and Jerusalem.”
20 Then the Lord showed me four craftsmen. 21 I asked, “What are these coming to do?”
He answered, “These are the horns that scattered Judah so that no one could raise their head, but the craftsmen have come to terrify them and throw down these horns of the nations who lifted up their horns(AQ) against the land of Judah to scatter its people.”[a](AR)
