The Vision of the High Priest

Then I saw Joshua the High Priest standing in the presence of the angel of the Lord, with Satan[a] standing at his right to oppose him.

The Lord told Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, Satan—in fact, may the Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! This man is a burning brand plucked from the fire, is he not?”

Now Joshua was wearing filthy clothes as he stood in the presence of the angel.

So the angel[b] continued to tell those who were standing in his presence, “Remove his filthy clothes.”

And he told Joshua,[c] “Look how I’ve removed your iniquity. Now I’m clothing you with fine garments.”

Then I said, “Let them place a pure diadem[d] on his head.”

So they placed the pure diadem[e] on his head and clothed him with fine garments while the angel of the Lord was standing beside them.[f]

The Lord’s Charge to Joshua

Then the angel of the Lord gave this charge to Joshua: “This is what the Lord of the Heavenly Armies says: ‘If you will live according to my ways, and if you will keep what I have entrusted to you,[g] then you will also administer my Temple, and you will also guard my courtyards. And I will give you access to these who serve[h] here.

“‘Listen, High Priest Joshua, you and those companions of yours who sit with you,[i] for these men are a sign that I am presenting my servant, the Branch.[j] Look, the stone that I put in place in Joshua’s presence—on that one stone are seven eyes.[k] And look, I will do the engraving myself,’ declares the Lord of the Heavenly Armies, ‘and I will remove the perversity of that land in a single day. 10 At that time,’[l] declares the Lord of the Heavenly Armies, ‘you will invite each of your neighbors to join you[m] under the vine and fig tree.’”

Zechariah’s Fourth Vision

And he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before[a] the angel of Yahweh; and Satan[b] was standing on his right to accuse him. But Yahweh said to Satan,[c] “Yahweh rebukes you, O Satan![d] Yahweh who has chosen Jerusalem rebukes you! Is this not a stick snatched from the fire?” And Joshua was clothed in filthy garments and was standing before[e] the angel. And he answered and said to the ones standing before[f] him, saying, “Remove the filthy garments from him.” And he said to him, “See, I have taken away your guilt[g] from you, and will clothe you with rich garments.” And I said, “Let them put a clean headband[h] on his head.” And they put a clean headband on his head, and they clothed him with garments. And the angel of Yahweh was standing by.

And the angel of Yahweh assured Joshua, saying, “Thus says Yahweh of hosts: ‘If you will walk in my ways, and if you will keep my requirements, then you will judge[i] my house, and you will also guard my courtyards, and I will give to you passageways[j] among these that are standing here. Listen, please, O Joshua the high priest, you and your companions[k] that are sitting before[l] you. For the men are a sign that,[m] look, I am going to bring my servant the Branch.[n] For consider, the stone that I set before[o] Joshua, on one stone are seven eyes.[p] Look, I am going to engrave an inscription on it,’[q] declares[r] Yahweh of hosts, ‘and I will remove the guilt of that land in a single day. 10 On that day,’ declares[s] Yahweh of hosts, ‘you will invite one another[t] under the vine and under the fig tree.’”
