A Vision of a Man with a Measuring Line

[a] And I lifted my eyes and saw, and behold, (A)a man with a measuring line in his hand! Then I said, “Where are you going?” And he said to me, (B)“To measure Jerusalem, to see what is its width and what is its length.” And behold, (C)the angel who talked with me came forward, and another angel came forward to meet him and said to him, “Run, say to that young man, (D)‘Jerusalem shall be inhabited (E)as villages without walls, because of (F)the multitude of people and livestock in it. And I will be to her (G)a wall of fire all around, declares the Lord, and I will be the glory in her midst.’”

Up! Up! (H)Flee from the land of the north, declares the Lord. For I have (I)spread you abroad as the four winds of the heavens, declares the Lord. (J)Up! Escape to Zion, you who dwell with the daughter of Babylon. For thus said the Lord of hosts, after his glory sent me[b] to the nations who plundered you, (K)for he who touches you touches (L)the apple of his eye: “Behold, (M)I will shake my hand over them, (N)and they shall become plunder for those who served them. Then (O)you will know that the Lord of hosts has sent me. 10 (P)Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion, for (Q)behold, I come (R)and I will dwell in your midst, declares the Lord. 11 (S)And many nations shall join themselves to the Lord in that day, and shall be my people. (T)And I will dwell in your midst, and (U)you shall know that the Lord of hosts has sent me to you. 12 (V)And the Lord will inherit Judah as his portion in the holy land, and will again (W)choose Jerusalem.”

13 Be silent, all flesh, before the Lord, for he has roused himself from his holy dwelling.

A Vision of Joshua the High Priest

Then he showed me (X)Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and (Y)Satan[c] standing at his right hand to accuse him. And the Lord said to Satan, (Z)“The Lord rebuke you, O Satan! The Lord who has (AA)chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is not this (AB)a brand[d] plucked from the fire?” Now (AC)Joshua was standing before the angel, (AD)clothed with filthy garments. And the angel said to (AE)those who were standing before him, (AF)“Remove the filthy garments from him.” And to him he said, “Behold, (AG)I have taken your iniquity away from you, and (AH)I will clothe you with pure vestments.” And I said, (AI)“Let them put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the Lord was standing by.

And the angel of the Lord solemnly assured (AJ)Joshua, “Thus says the Lord of hosts: If you will walk in my ways and (AK)keep my charge, then you shall (AL)rule my house and have charge of my courts, and I will give you the right of access among (AM)those who are standing here. Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, you and your friends who sit before you, for (AN)they are men who are a sign: behold, I will bring (AO)my servant (AP)the Branch. For behold, on (AQ)the stone that I have set before Joshua, on a single stone with (AR)seven eyes,[e] I will (AS)engrave its inscription, declares the Lord of hosts, and (AT)I will remove the iniquity of this land in a single day. 10 In that day, declares the Lord of hosts, every one of you will invite his neighbor to come (AU)under his vine and under his fig tree.”

The Lord Will Choose Jerusalem

[a]I looked up and saw a man with a measuring line in his hand. I asked him, “Where are you going?”

He answered, “I am going to measure Jerusalem to see how wide and how long it is.”

Then the angel who was speaking with me left. Another angel came out to meet him and said to him, “Run, and say to that young man, ‘Jerusalem will be inhabited like an unwalled village because it will have so many people and animals in it. I will be a wall of fire around it, declares the Lord. I will be the glory within it.’

“Hurry, hurry! Flee from the land of the north, declares the Lord. I’ve scattered you to the four winds of heaven. Hurry, Zion! Escape, you inhabitants of Babylon! This is what the Lord of Armies says: Afterwards, the Glory sent me to the nations who looted you. Whoever touches you touches the apple of his eye. I’m going to shake my fist at the nations, and their own slaves will loot them. Then you will know that the Lord of Armies has sent me. 10 Sing for joy and rejoice, people of Zion. I’m going to come and live among you, declares the Lord. 11 On that day many nations will join the Lord and become my people. I will live among you. Then you will know that the Lord of Armies has sent me to you. 12 The Lord will claim Judah as his own in the holy land and will again choose Jerusalem.

13 “Everyone be silent in the presence of the Lord. He is waking up and setting out from his holy dwelling place.”

The Lord Will Send His Servant, the Branch

Then he showed me Joshua, the chief priest, standing in front of the Messenger of the Lord. Satan the Accuser was standing at Joshua’s right side to accuse him. The Lord said to Satan, “I, the Lord, silence you, Satan! I, the Lord, who has chosen Jerusalem, silence you! Isn’t this man like a burning log snatched from a fire?”

Joshua was wearing filthy clothes and was standing in front of the Messenger. The Messenger said to those who were standing in front of him, “Remove Joshua’s filthy clothes.” Then he said to Joshua, “See, I have taken your sin away from you, and I will dress you in fine clothing.”

So I said, “Put a clean turban on his head.” They put a clean turban on his head and dressed him while the Messenger of the Lord was standing there.

The Messenger of the Lord advised Joshua, “This is what the Lord of Armies says: If you live according to my ways and follow my requirements, you will govern my temple and watch over my courtyards. Then I will give you free access to walk among those standing here.

“Listen, Chief Priest Joshua and your friends sitting with you. These men are a sign of things to come: I’m going to bring my servant, the Branch.

“Look at the stone I have set in front of Joshua. That one stone has seven eyes.[b] I am engraving an inscription on it,” declares the Lord of Armies. “I will remove this land’s sin in a single day. 10 On that day,” declares the Lord of Armies, “each of you will invite your neighbor to sit under your vine and fig tree.”

The Example of Christ

15 (A)We who are strong (B)have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. (C)Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. For (D)Christ did not please himself, but as it is written, (E)“The reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me.” For (F)whatever was written in former days was written for our (G)instruction, that through endurance and through (H)the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you (I)to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify (J)the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.

Christ the Hope of Jews and Gentiles

For I tell you that Christ (K)became a servant to the circumcised to show God's truthfulness, in order (L)to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, and in order (M)that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written,

(N)“Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles,
    and sing to your name.”

10 And again it is said,

(O)“Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people.”

11 And again,

(P)“Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles,
and let all the peoples extol him.”

12 And again Isaiah says,

(Q)(R)“The root of Jesse will come,
    even he who arises to rule the Gentiles;
(S)in him will the Gentiles hope.”

13 May the God of hope fill you with all (T)joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

15 So those of us who have a strong ⌞faith⌟ must be patient with the weaknesses of those whose ⌞faith⌟ is not so strong. We must not think only of ourselves. We should all be concerned about our neighbor and the good things that will build his faith. Christ did not think only of himself. Rather, as Scripture says, “The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.”

God Gives Us Unity

Everything written long ago was written to teach us so that we would have confidence through the endurance and encouragement which the Scriptures give us. May God, who gives you this endurance and encouragement, allow you to live in harmony with each other by following the example of Christ Jesus. Then, having the same goal, you will praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Therefore, accept each other in the same way that Christ accepted you. He did this to bring glory to God. Let me explain. Christ became a servant for the Jewish people to reveal God’s truth. As a result, he fulfilled God’s promise to the ancestors of the Jewish people. People who are not Jewish praise God for his mercy as well. This is what the Scriptures say,

“That is why I will give thanks to you among the nations
and I will sing praises to your name.”

10 And Scripture says again,

“You nations, be happy together with his people!”

11 And again,

“Praise the Lord, all you nations!
Praise him, all you people of the world!”

12 Again, Isaiah says,

“There will be a root from Jesse.
He will rise to rule the nations,
and he will give the nations hope.”

13 May God, the source of hope, fill you with joy and peace through your faith in him. Then you will overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Y cantaré a tu nombre.(B)

10 Y otra vez dice:

Alegraos, gentiles, con su pueblo.(C)

11 Y otra vez:

Alabad al Señor todos los gentiles,

Y magnificadle todos los pueblos.(D)

12 Y otra vez dice Isaías:

Estará la raíz de Isaí,

Y el que se levantará a regir los gentiles;
