Therefore say to them, Thus declares the Lord of hosts: (A)Return to me, says the Lord of hosts, and (B)I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts. (C)Do not be like your fathers, (D)to whom the former prophets cried out, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, (E)Return from your evil ways and from your evil deeds.’ But (F)they did not hear or pay attention to me, declares the Lord. Your fathers, where are they? And (G)the prophets, do they live forever? (H)But my words and my statutes, which I commanded (I)my servants the prophets, did they not (J)overtake your fathers? So they repented and said, (K)‘As the Lord of hosts purposed to deal with us for (L)our ways and (M)deeds, so has he dealt with us.’”

A Vision of a Horseman

On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, which is the month of Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet (N)Zechariah, the son of (O)Berechiah, son of (P)Iddo, saying, “I saw in the night, and behold, (Q)a man riding on a red horse! He was standing among the myrtle trees in the glen, and behind him were (R)red, sorrel, and white horses. Then I said, ‘What are these, my lord?’ (S)The angel who talked with me said to me, ‘I will show you what they are.’ 10 So (T)the man who was standing among the myrtle trees answered, (U)‘These are they whom the Lord has sent to (V)patrol the earth.’ 11 And they answered (W)the angel of the Lord who was standing among the myrtle trees, and said, (X)‘We have patrolled the earth, and behold, all the earth (Y)remains at rest.’ 12 Then (Z)the angel of the Lord said, (AA)‘O Lord of hosts, (AB)how long will you (AC)have no mercy on Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, against which you have been angry these (AD)seventy years?’ 13 And the Lord answered (AE)gracious and comforting words to (AF)the angel who talked with me. 14 So (AG)the angel who talked with me said to me, ‘Cry out, Thus says the Lord of hosts: (AH)I am exceedingly jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion. 15 (AI)And I am exceedingly angry with the nations that are (AJ)at ease; (AK)for while I was angry but a little, (AL)they furthered the disaster.

Therefore tell the people: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Return(A) to me,’ declares the Lord Almighty, ‘and I will return to you,’(B) says the Lord Almighty. Do not be like your ancestors,(C) to whom the earlier prophets(D) proclaimed: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Turn from your evil ways(E) and your evil practices.’ But they would not listen or pay attention to me,(F) declares the Lord.(G) Where are your ancestors now? And the prophets, do they live forever? But did not my words(H) and my decrees, which I commanded my servants the prophets, overtake your ancestors?(I)

“Then they repented and said, ‘The Lord Almighty has done to us what our ways and practices deserve,(J) just as he determined to do.’”(K)

The Man Among the Myrtle Trees

On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, the month of Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berekiah, the son of Iddo.(L)

During the night I had a vision, and there before me was a man mounted on a red(M) horse. He was standing among the myrtle trees in a ravine. Behind him were red, brown and white horses.(N)

I asked, “What are these, my lord?”

The angel(O) who was talking with me answered, “I will show you what they are.”(P)

10 Then the man standing among the myrtle trees explained, “They are the ones the Lord has sent to go throughout the earth.”(Q)

11 And they reported to the angel of the Lord(R) who was standing among the myrtle trees, “We have gone throughout the earth and found the whole world at rest and in peace.”(S)

12 Then the angel of the Lord said, “Lord Almighty, how long(T) will you withhold mercy(U) from Jerusalem and from the towns of Judah,(V) which you have been angry with these seventy(W) years?” 13 So the Lord spoke(X) kind and comforting words(Y) to the angel who talked with me.(Z)

14 Then the angel who was speaking to me said, “Proclaim this word: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘I am very jealous(AA) for Jerusalem and Zion, 15 and I am very angry with the nations that feel secure.(AB) I was only a little angry,(AC) but they went too far with the punishment.’(AD)
