⁶ If someone asks, ‘What are these wounds on your body^[a]?’ they will answer, ‘The wounds I was given at the house of my friends.’

³⁵ “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”

¹¹ And the smoke of their torment will rise for ever and ever.^(A) There will be no rest day or night^(B) for those who worship the beast and its image,^(C) or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.”^(D)

¹⁴ It was the day of Preparation^(A) of the Passover; it was about noon.^(B)

“Here is your king,”^(C) Pilate said to the Jews.

¹⁵ But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!”

“Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked.

“We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.

¹⁶ Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.^(D)

So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.

²⁸ So they shouted louder and slashed^(A) themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed.

¹⁶ It also forced all people, great and small,^(A) rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads,^{(B) 17} so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark,^(C) which is the name of the beast or the number of its name.^(D)
