And you will know that I have sent you this warning so that my covenant with Levi(A) may continue,” says the Lord Almighty. “My covenant was with him, a covenant(B) of life and peace,(C) and I gave them to him; this called for reverence(D) and he revered me and stood in awe of my name. True instruction(E) was in his mouth and nothing false was found on his lips. He walked(F) with me in peace(G) and uprightness,(H) and turned many from sin.(I)

“For the lips of a priest(J) ought to preserve knowledge, because he is the messenger(K) of the Lord Almighty and people seek instruction from his mouth.(L) But you have turned from the way(M) and by your teaching have caused many to stumble;(N) you have violated the covenant(O) with Levi,”(P) says the Lord Almighty. “So I have caused you to be despised(Q) and humiliated(R) before all the people, because you have not followed my ways but have shown partiality(S) in matters of the law.”(T)

The Levites

This is the account of the family of Aaron and Moses(A) at the time the Lord spoke to Moses at Mount Sinai.(B)

The names of the sons of Aaron were Nadab the firstborn(C) and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.(D) Those were the names of Aaron’s sons, the anointed priests,(E) who were ordained to serve as priests. Nadab and Abihu, however, died before the Lord(F) when they made an offering with unauthorized fire before him in the Desert of Sinai.(G) They had no sons, so Eleazar and Ithamar(H) served as priests during the lifetime of their father Aaron.(I)

17 The sons of Gershon, by clans, were Libni and Shimei.(D)

18 The sons of Kohath(E) were Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel.(F) Kohath lived 133 years.

19 The sons of Merari were Mahli and Mushi.(G)

20 Amram(H) married his father’s sister Jochebed, who bore him Aaron and Moses.(I) Amram lived 137 years.

21 The sons of Izhar(J) were Korah, Nepheg and Zikri.

22 The sons of Uzziel were Mishael, Elzaphan(K) and Sithri.

23 Aaron married Elisheba, daughter of Amminadab(L) and sister of Nahshon,(M) and she bore him Nadab and Abihu,(N) Eleazar(O) and Ithamar.(P)

24 The sons of Korah(Q) were Assir, Elkanah and Abiasaph. These were the Korahite clans.

25 Eleazar son of Aaron married one of the daughters of Putiel, and she bore him Phinehas.(R)

These were the heads of the Levite families, clan by clan.

26 It was this Aaron and Moses to whom the Lord said, “Bring the Israelites out of Egypt(S) by their divisions.”(T)
