1 Au huitième mois de la deuxième année du règne de Darius[a], l’Eternel adressa la parole à Zacharie, le prophète[b], fils de Barachie et petit-fils d’Iddo, en ces termes :
2 L’Eternel s’est violemment irrité contre vos pères. 3 Dis à ce peuple : Voici ce que déclare le Seigneur des armées célestes : Revenez à moi, dit le Seigneur des armées célestes, et je reviendrai à vous, a dit le Seigneur des armées célestes. 4 Ne faites pas comme vos ancêtres, que les prophètes d’autrefois ont exhortés en leur disant : « Voici ce que déclare le Seigneur des armées célestes : Abandonnez votre mauvaise conduite et renoncez à vos mauvaises actions. » Mais vos ancêtres n’ont pas écouté, ils n’ont pas prêté attention à mes paroles, l’Eternel le déclare.
5 Vos ancêtres où sont-ils à présent ? Et les prophètes, sont-ils toujours en vie ? 6 Or mes paroles et mes lois que j’avais ordonné à mes serviteurs les prophètes de leur transmettre, n’ont-elles pas été suivies d’effet pour vos pères ? Alors ils ont changé d’attitude et ils ont reconnu : « Oui, le Seigneur des armées célestes nous a traités comme il avait résolu de le faire, comme le méritaient notre conduite et nos actes. »

7 La deuxième année du règne de Darius, au vingt-quatrième jour du onzième mois, le mois de Shebath[c], la parole de l’Eternel fut adressée à Zacharie le prophète, fils de Barachie et petit-fils d’Iddo.
8 Cette nuit j’ai vu, dans une vision, un cavalier monté sur un cheval roux. Il se tenait parmi les myrtes[d] dans les profondeurs, et derrière lui, il y avait d’autres chevaux : des roux, des gris-verts et des blancs[e]. 9 Je demandai alors : Mon seigneur, que représentent-ils ?
L’ange qui me parlait répondit : Je vais te montrer ce qu’ils représentent.
10 Et l’individu qui se tenait parmi les myrtes intervint en disant : Ce sont les coursiers que l’Eternel a envoyés pour parcourir la terre.
11 Alors les cavaliers s’adressèrent à l’ange de l’Eternel qui se tenait parmi les myrtes, et lui firent ce rapport : Nous venons de parcourir la terre et nous avons constaté qu’elle est toute tranquille et calme.
12 Là-dessus, l’ange de l’Eternel s’exclama : Seigneur des armées célestes, voilà soixante-dix ans[f] que tu es irrité contre Jérusalem et contre les villes de Juda. Jusques à quand tarderas-tu à les prendre en pitié[g] ?
13 Alors l’Eternel répondit à l’ange qui me parlait par des paroles bienveillantes et des paroles de consolation.
14 L’ange qui me parlait me dit : Proclame ces paroles : Voici ce que déclare le Seigneur des armées célestes : J’éprouve pour Jérusalem et pour Sion un amour passionné. 15 Et je suis saisi d’une violente indignation contre les peuples ennemis qui vivent dans la tranquillité. Car je n’étais qu’un peu irrité contre mon peuple, mais eux, ils ont accru son malheur. 16 C’est pourquoi voici ce que dit l’Eternel : Je me tourne vers Jérusalem avec compassion. Mon temple y sera rebâti – le Seigneur des armées célestes le déclare – et l’on étendra le cordeau d’arpenteur sur Jérusalem.
17 Proclame encore ce message : Voici ce que déclare le Seigneur des armées célestes : Mes villes déborderont de nouveau de prospérité, l’Eternel consolera de nouveau Sion et choisira de nouveau Jérusalem.

A Call to Return to the Lord
1 In the eighth month of the second year of Darius,(A) the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah(B) son of Berekiah,(C) the son of Iddo:(D)
2 “The Lord was very angry(E) with your ancestors. 3 Therefore tell the people: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Return(F) to me,’ declares the Lord Almighty, ‘and I will return to you,’(G) says the Lord Almighty. 4 Do not be like your ancestors,(H) to whom the earlier prophets(I) proclaimed: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Turn from your evil ways(J) and your evil practices.’ But they would not listen or pay attention to me,(K) declares the Lord.(L) 5 Where are your ancestors now? And the prophets, do they live forever? 6 But did not my words(M) and my decrees, which I commanded my servants the prophets, overtake your ancestors?(N)
“Then they repented and said, ‘The Lord Almighty has done to us what our ways and practices deserve,(O) just as he determined to do.’”(P)
The Man Among the Myrtle Trees
7 On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, the month of Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berekiah, the son of Iddo.(Q)
8 During the night I had a vision, and there before me was a man mounted on a red(R) horse. He was standing among the myrtle trees in a ravine. Behind him were red, brown and white horses.(S)
9 I asked, “What are these, my lord?”
The angel(T) who was talking with me answered, “I will show you what they are.”(U)
10 Then the man standing among the myrtle trees explained, “They are the ones the Lord has sent to go throughout the earth.”(V)
11 And they reported to the angel of the Lord(W) who was standing among the myrtle trees, “We have gone throughout the earth and found the whole world at rest and in peace.”(X)
12 Then the angel of the Lord said, “Lord Almighty, how long(Y) will you withhold mercy(Z) from Jerusalem and from the towns of Judah,(AA) which you have been angry with these seventy(AB) years?” 13 So the Lord spoke(AC) kind and comforting words(AD) to the angel who talked with me.(AE)
14 Then the angel who was speaking to me said, “Proclaim this word: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘I am very jealous(AF) for Jerusalem and Zion, 15 and I am very angry with the nations that feel secure.(AG) I was only a little angry,(AH) but they went too far with the punishment.’(AI)
16 “Therefore this is what the Lord says: ‘I will return(AJ) to Jerusalem with mercy, and there my house will be rebuilt. And the measuring line(AK) will be stretched out over Jerusalem,’ declares the Lord Almighty.(AL)
17 “Proclaim further: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘My towns will again overflow with prosperity, and the Lord will again comfort(AM) Zion and choose(AN) Jerusalem.’”(AO)
Four Horns and Four Craftsmen
18 Then I looked up, and there before me were four horns. 19 I asked the angel who was speaking to me, “What are these?”
He answered me, “These are the horns(AP) that scattered Judah, Israel and Jerusalem.”
20 Then the Lord showed me four craftsmen. 21 I asked, “What are these coming to do?”
He answered, “These are the horns that scattered Judah so that no one could raise their head, but the craftsmen have come to terrify them and throw down these horns of the nations who lifted up their horns(AQ) against the land of Judah to scatter its people.”[a](AR)

1 In the eighth month of the second year of (A)Darius, the word of the Lord came to (B)Zechariah the prophet, the son of Berechiah, the son of (C)Iddo saying, 2 “The Lord was very (D)angry with your fathers. 3 Therefore say to them, ‘This is what the Lord of armies says: “(E)Return to Me,” declares the Lord of armies, “[a]that I may return to you,” says the Lord of armies. 4 “Do not be (F)like your fathers, to whom the (G)former prophets proclaimed, saying, ‘This is what the Lord of armies says: “(H)Return now from your evil ways and from your evil deeds.”’ But they did (I)not listen or pay attention to Me,” declares the Lord. 5 “Your (J)fathers, where are they? And the (K)prophets, do they live forever? 6 But did My words and My statutes, which I commanded My servants the prophets, not [b](L)overtake your fathers? Then they repented and said, ‘(M)Just as the Lord of armies planned to do to us in accordance with our ways and our deeds, so He has dealt with us.’”’”
Patrol of the Earth
7 On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, that is, the month Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to Zechariah the prophet, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo, [c]as follows: 8 I saw at night, and behold, a man was riding on a (N)red horse, and he was standing among the (O)myrtle trees which were in the ravine, with red, [d]sorrel, and (P)white horses behind him. 9 Then I said, “What are these, my (Q)lord?” And the (R)angel who was speaking with me said to me, “I will show you what these are.” 10 And the man who was standing among the myrtle trees responded and said, “These are the ones whom the Lord has sent to [e](S)patrol the earth.” 11 So they responded to the angel of the Lord who was (T)standing among the myrtle trees and said, “We have [f]patrolled the earth, and behold, (U)all the earth is [g]still and quiet.”
12 Then the angel of the Lord said, “Lord of armies, (V)how long will You (W)take no pity on Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, with which You have been (X)indignant for these (Y)seventy years?” 13 And the Lord responded to the (Z)angel who was speaking with me with [h]gracious words, (AA)comforting words. 14 So the angel who was speaking with me said to me, “(AB)Proclaim, saying, ‘This is what the Lord of armies says: “I am (AC)exceedingly jealous for Jerusalem and Zion. 15 But I am very (AD)angry with the nations who are (AE)carefree; for while I was only a little angry, they [i](AF)furthered the disaster.” 16 Therefore the Lord says this: “I will (AG)return to Jerusalem with compassion; My (AH)house will be built in it,” declares the Lord of armies, “and a measuring (AI)line will be stretched over Jerusalem.”’ 17 Again, proclaim, saying, ‘This is what the Lord of armies says: “My (AJ)cities will again overflow with prosperity, and the Lord will again (AK)comfort Zion and again (AL)choose Jerusalem.”’”
18 [j]Then I raised my eyes and looked, and behold, there were four horns. 19 So I said to the angel who was speaking with me, “What are these?” And he said to me, “These are the (AM)horns that have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.” 20 Then the Lord showed me four (AN)craftsmen. 21 And I said, “What are these coming to do?” And he said, “These are the (AO)horns that have scattered Judah so that no one lifts up his head; but these craftsmen have come to frighten them, to (AP)throw down the horns of the nations who have lifted up their horns against the land of Judah in order to scatter it.”
