El Señor quiere bondad y compasión
7 El mes noveno, que es el mes de quisleu, del cuarto año[a] de Darío como rey de Persia, Zacarías recibió otro mensaje del SEÑOR. 2 El pueblo de Betel había enviado a Sarézer, Reguen Mélec y a sus hombres a pedirle ayuda al SEÑOR. 3 Ellos preguntaron a los sacerdotes del templo del SEÑOR y a los profetas: «¿Debemos seguir llorando y ayunando durante el quinto mes del año como lo hemos hecho desde hace mucho tiempo?»
4 Entonces recibí otro mensaje del SEÑOR Todopoderoso:
5 «Diles lo siguiente a toda la gente de la tierra
y a los sacerdotes:
“Cuando ustedes ayunan y hacen lamentación
en el quinto y séptimo mes del año
como lo han hecho por 70 años,
en realidad no lo hacen por mí.
6 ¿No es cierto que cuando comen y beben
lo hacen para su propia satisfacción?
7 ¿No es esto lo mismo que el SEÑOR dijo
por medio de los primeros profetas?
¿No dijo lo mismo cuando Jerusalén
y los pueblos de alrededor estaban habitados y seguros
y cuando aun vivía gente en el Néguev y en la Sefelá?”»
8 Este es el mensaje que el SEÑOR le dio a Zacarías: 9 «Así dice el SEÑOR Todopoderoso:
»Practiquen la justicia,
y sean verdaderamente justos.
Que haya bondad y compasión entre ustedes.
10 No traten mal a las viudas ni a los huérfanos,
ni a los inmigrantes ni a los pobres.
No planeen en su corazón
hacerles mal a los demás».
11 Pero ellos no quisieron prestar atención, dieron la espalda y se negaron a escuchar. 12 Endurecieron su corazón y no quisieron escuchar a los primeros profetas que les llevaban la ley y las enseñanzas del SEÑOR Todopoderoso. El SEÑOR Todopoderoso se enojó mucho. 13 Por eso, él dijo: «Ellos no quisieron escucharme cuando yo los llamé. Así que yo tampoco los escucharé cuando me pidan ayuda, dice el SEÑOR Todopoderoso. 14 Los enviaré a naciones que ni siquiera conocen. Su tierra quedará destruida y ya nadie pasará por allí. Esta rica tierra quedará convertida en ruinas».

Justice and Mercy, Not Fasting
7 In the fourth year of King Darius, the word of the Lord came to Zechariah(A) on the fourth day of the ninth month, the month of Kislev.(B) 2 The people of Bethel had sent Sharezer and Regem-Melek, together with their men, to entreat(C) the Lord(D) 3 by asking the priests of the house of the Lord Almighty and the prophets, “Should I mourn(E) and fast in the fifth(F) month, as I have done for so many years?”
4 Then the word of the Lord Almighty came to me: 5 “Ask all the people of the land and the priests, ‘When you fasted(G) and mourned in the fifth and seventh(H) months for the past seventy years,(I) was it really for me that you fasted? 6 And when you were eating and drinking, were you not just feasting for yourselves?(J) 7 Are these not the words the Lord proclaimed through the earlier prophets(K) when Jerusalem and its surrounding towns were at rest(L) and prosperous, and the Negev and the western foothills(M) were settled?’”(N)
8 And the word of the Lord came again to Zechariah: 9 “This is what the Lord Almighty said: ‘Administer true justice;(O) show mercy and compassion to one another.(P) 10 Do not oppress the widow(Q) or the fatherless, the foreigner(R) or the poor.(S) Do not plot evil against each other.’(T)
11 “But they refused to pay attention; stubbornly(U) they turned their backs(V) and covered their ears.(W) 12 They made their hearts as hard as flint(X) and would not listen to the law or to the words that the Lord Almighty had sent by his Spirit through the earlier prophets.(Y) So the Lord Almighty was very angry.(Z)
13 “‘When I called, they did not listen;(AA) so when they called, I would not listen,’(AB) says the Lord Almighty.(AC) 14 ‘I scattered(AD) them with a whirlwind(AE) among all the nations, where they were strangers. The land they left behind them was so desolate that no one traveled through it.(AF) This is how they made the pleasant land desolate.(AG)’”

Answering the Bethel delegation
7 In the fourth year of Darius the king, the Lord’s word came to Zechariah on the fourth day of the ninth month, Kislev.[a] 2 The people of[b] Bethel sent Sharezer and Regem-Melech,[c] along with his men, to seek the Lord’s favor, 3 saying to the priests who were in the house of the Lord of heavenly forces and to the prophets: “Should I weep in the fifth month and abstain as I have done for a number of years?”
4 Then the word of the Lord of heavenly forces came to me: 5 Say to all the land’s people and to the priests: When you fasted and lamented in the fifth month and the seventh month for these past seventy years, did you fast for me? 6 When you ate and drank, weren’t you the ones eating and drinking? 7 Weren’t these the words that the Lord proclaimed through the former prophets when Jerusalem was dwelling quietly along with the surrounding cities, and when the arid southern plain and the western foothills were inhabited?
8 The Lord’s word came to Zechariah:
9 The Lord of heavenly forces proclaims:
Make just and faithful decisions; show kindness and compassion to each other! 10 Don’t oppress the widow, the orphan, the stranger, and the poor; don’t plan evil against each other! 11 But they refused to pay attention. They turned a cold shoulder and stopped listening.
12 They steeled their hearts against hearing the Instruction and the words that the Lord of heavenly forces sent by his spirit through the earlier prophets. As a result, the Lord of heavenly forces became enraged.
13 So just as he called and they didn’t listen, when they called, I didn’t listen, says the Lord of heavenly forces. 14 I scattered them throughout the nations whom they didn’t know. The land was devastated behind them, with no one leaving or returning. They turned a delightful land into a wasteland.
