Encabezamiento y llamada a la conversión
1 El octavo mes del año segundo de Darío el Señor dirigió esta palabra al profeta Zacarías, hijo de Berequías y nieto de Idó:
2 — Vuestros antepasados irritaron sobremanera al Señor. 3 Di, pues, a los israelitas: “Esto dice el Señor del universo: Volved a mí —oráculo del Señor del universo— y yo me volveré a vosotros”. Es palabra del Señor del universo. 4 No imitéis a vuestros antepasados a quienes ya los más antiguos profetas interpelaban diciendo: “Así os habla el Señor del universo: Cambiad de conducta; abandonad vuestro mal proceder y vuestras perversas acciones”. Pero ni me escucharon ni me hicieron caso alguno —oráculo del Señor—. 5 Pues bien, ¿dónde están ahora vuestros antepasados? Y los profetas, ¿acaso van a vivir indefinidamente? 6 Sin embargo, las palabras y preceptos que encomendé transmitir por medio de mis siervos, los profetas, encontraron acogida en vuestros antepasados que se convirtieron reconociendo que el Señor del universo los había tratado de acuerdo con su proceder y sus acciones.

Primera visión: los jinetes
7 El día veinticuatro del undécimo mes —es decir, el mes de Sebat— del reinado de Darío, el Señor dirigió su palabra al profeta Zacarías, hijo de Berequías y nieto de Idó, que se expresó en estos términos:
8 — He tenido durante la noche una visión: vi a un hombre que estaba sentado en un caballo rojo entre los mirtos de la hondonada; detrás de él había caballos rojos, alazanes y blancos. 9 Yo entonces pregunté:
— ¿Quiénes son estos, mi Señor?
El ángel que hablaba conmigo me respondió:
— Yo te indicaré quiénes son.
10 Entonces intervino el hombre que estaba entre los mirtos y dijo:
— Estos son los que ha enviado el Señor a recorrer la tierra. 11 Ellos entonces se dirigieron al ángel del Señor y le informaron:
— Hemos recorrido toda la tierra y la hemos encontrado tranquila y en calma.
12 El ángel del Señor exclamó:
— Señor del universo, ¿cuándo, por fin, te apiadarás de Jerusalén y de las ciudades de Judá contra las que llevas ya setenta años irritado?
13 Entonces el Señor dio al ángel que me hablaba una contestación amable y consoladora. 14 Así que el ángel que hablaba conmigo me dijo:
— Proclama: “Esto dice el Señor del universo: Estoy profundamente enamorado de Jerusalén y de Sión, 15 y es grande mi enojo contra las naciones que, seguras de sí mismas, se aprovecharon de que yo no estaba muy irritado [contra ellas] para intensificar su hostilidad. 16 Por eso así dice el Señor: Miro compasivo a Jerusalén donde será reconstruido mi Templo —oráculo del Señor del universo— junto con el resto de la ciudad”. 17 Y proclama también: “Esto dice el Señor del universo: Mis ciudades rebosarán bienestar, el Señor colmará de nuevo a Sión de consuelo y Jerusalén podrá aún ser elegida”.

A Call to Return to the Lord
1 In the eighth month, (A)in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet (B)Zechariah, the son of (C)Berechiah, son of (D)Iddo, saying, 2 (E)“The Lord was very angry with your fathers. 3 Therefore say to them, Thus declares the Lord of hosts: (F)Return to me, says the Lord of hosts, and (G)I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts. 4 (H)Do not be like your fathers, (I)to whom the former prophets cried out, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, (J)Return from your evil ways and from your evil deeds.’ But (K)they did not hear or pay attention to me, declares the Lord. 5 Your fathers, where are they? And (L)the prophets, do they live forever? 6 (M)But my words and my statutes, which I commanded (N)my servants the prophets, did they not (O)overtake your fathers? So they repented and said, (P)‘As the Lord of hosts purposed to deal with us for (Q)our ways and (R)deeds, so has he dealt with us.’”
A Vision of a Horseman
7 On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, which is the month of Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet (S)Zechariah, the son of (T)Berechiah, son of (U)Iddo, saying, 8 “I saw in the night, and behold, (V)a man riding on a red horse! He was standing among the myrtle trees in the glen, and behind him were (W)red, sorrel, and white horses. 9 Then I said, ‘What are these, my lord?’ (X)The angel who talked with me said to me, ‘I will show you what they are.’ 10 So (Y)the man who was standing among the myrtle trees answered, (Z)‘These are they whom the Lord has sent to (AA)patrol the earth.’ 11 And they answered (AB)the angel of the Lord who was standing among the myrtle trees, and said, (AC)‘We have patrolled the earth, and behold, all the earth (AD)remains at rest.’ 12 Then (AE)the angel of the Lord said, (AF)‘O Lord of hosts, (AG)how long will you (AH)have no mercy on Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, against which you have been angry these (AI)seventy years?’ 13 And the Lord answered (AJ)gracious and comforting words to (AK)the angel who talked with me. 14 So (AL)the angel who talked with me said to me, ‘Cry out, Thus says the Lord of hosts: (AM)I am exceedingly jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion. 15 (AN)And I am exceedingly angry with the nations that are (AO)at ease; (AP)for while I was angry but a little, (AQ)they furthered the disaster. 16 Therefore, thus says the Lord, (AR)I have returned to Jerusalem with mercy; (AS)my house shall be built in it, declares the Lord of hosts, and (AT)the measuring line shall be stretched out over Jerusalem. 17 Cry out again, Thus says the Lord of hosts: (AU)My cities shall again overflow with prosperity, (AV)and the Lord will again comfort Zion and again (AW)choose Jerusalem.’”
A Vision of Horns and Craftsmen
18 [a] And I lifted my eyes and saw, and behold, (AX)four horns! 19 And I said to (AY)the angel who talked with me, “What are these?” And he said to me, (AZ)“These are the horns that have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.” 20 Then the Lord showed me four craftsmen. 21 And I said, “What are these coming to do?” He said, (BA)“These are the horns that scattered Judah, so that no one raised his head. And these have come (BB)to terrify them, to cast down the horns of the nations (BC)who lifted up their horns against the land of Judah to scatter it.”

A Plea for Repentance
1 In the eighth month, in the second year of Darius,(A) the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah(B) son of Berechiah, son of Iddo: 2 “The Lord was extremely angry with your ancestors.(C) 3 So tell the people, ‘This is what the Lord of Armies says: Return to me—this is the declaration of the Lord of Armies—and I will return to you, says the Lord of Armies.(D) 4 Do not be like your ancestors;(E) the earlier prophets proclaimed to them:(F) This is what the Lord of Armies says: Turn from your evil ways and your evil deeds.(G) But they did not listen or pay attention to me—this is the Lord’s declaration. 5 Where are your ancestors now? And do the prophets live forever? 6 But didn’t my words and my statutes that I commanded my servants the prophets overtake your ancestors?’”
So the people repented and said, “As the Lord of Armies decided to deal with us for our ways and our deeds, so he has dealt with us.”(H)
The Night Visions
7 On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, which is the month of Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berechiah, son of Iddo:
First Vision: Horsemen
8 I looked out in the night and saw a man riding on a chestnut[a] horse.(I) He was standing among the myrtle trees in the valley.[b] Behind him were chestnut, brown, and white horses. 9 I asked, “What are these, my lord?”
The angel who was talking to me replied, “I will show you what they are.”
10 Then the man standing among the myrtle trees explained, “They are the ones the Lord has sent to patrol the earth.”
11 They reported to the angel of the Lord standing among the myrtle trees, “We have patrolled the earth, and right now the whole earth is calm and quiet.”(J)
12 Then the angel of the Lord responded, “How long, Lord of Armies, will you withhold mercy from Jerusalem and the cities of Judah that you have been angry with these seventy years?” (K) 13 The Lord replied with kind and comforting words to the angel who was speaking with me.
14 So the angel who was speaking with me said, “Proclaim: The Lord of Armies says: I am extremely jealous(L) for Jerusalem and Zion. 15 I am fiercely angry with the nations that are at ease,(M) for I was a little angry, but they made the destruction worse.[c] 16 Therefore, this is what the Lord says: In mercy, I have returned to Jerusalem; my house will be rebuilt within it—this is the declaration of the Lord of Armies—and a measuring line will be stretched out over Jerusalem.(N)
17 “Proclaim further: This is what the Lord of Armies says: My cities will again overflow with prosperity; the Lord will once more comfort Zion and again choose Jerusalem.”(O)
Second Vision: Four Horns and Craftsmen
18 Then I looked up and saw four horns.(P) 19 So I asked the angel who was speaking with me, “What are these?”
And he said to me, “These are the horns that scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.”
20 Then the Lord showed me four craftsmen. 21 I asked, “What are they coming to do?”
He replied, “These are the horns that scattered Judah so no one could raise his head. These craftsmen have come to terrify them, to cut off[d] the horns of the nations that raised a horn against the land of Judah to scatter it.”
