Israel Is Shameless
3 “They say, ‘If a man divorces his wife,
And she goes from him
And becomes another man’s,
(A)May he return to her again?’
Would not that (B)land be greatly polluted?
But you have (C)played the harlot with many lovers;
(D)Yet return to Me,” says the Lord.
2 “Lift up your eyes to (E)the desolate heights and see:
Where have you not [a]lain with men?
(F)By the road you have sat for them
Like an Arabian in the wilderness;
(G)And you have polluted the land
With your harlotries and your wickedness.
3 Therefore the (H)showers have been withheld,
And there has been no latter rain.
You have had a (I)harlot’s forehead;
You refuse to be ashamed.
4 Will you not from this time cry to Me,
‘My Father, You are (J)the guide of (K)my youth?
5 (L)Will He remain angry forever?
Will He keep it to the end?’
Behold, you have spoken and done evil things,
As you were able.”
A Call to Repentance
6 The Lord said also to me in the days of Josiah the king: “Have you seen what (M)backsliding Israel has done? She has (N)gone up on every high mountain and under every green tree, and there played the harlot. 7 (O)And I said, after she had done all these things, ‘Return to Me.’ But she did not return. And her treacherous (P)sister Judah saw it. 8 Then I saw that (Q)for all the causes for which backsliding Israel had committed adultery, I had (R)put her away and given her a certificate of divorce; (S)yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear, but went and played the harlot also. 9 So it came to pass, through her casual harlotry, that she (T)defiled the land and committed adultery with (U)stones and trees. 10 And yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah has not turned to Me (V)with her whole heart, but in pretense,” says the Lord.
11 Then the Lord said to me, (W)“Backsliding Israel has shown herself more righteous than treacherous Judah. 12 Go and proclaim these words toward (X)the north, and say:
‘Return, backsliding Israel,’ says the Lord;
‘I will not cause My anger to fall on you.
For I am (Y)merciful,’ says the Lord;
‘I will not remain angry forever.
13 (Z)Only acknowledge your iniquity,
That you have transgressed against the Lord your God,
And have (AA)scattered your [b]charms
To (AB)alien deities (AC)under every green tree,
And you have not obeyed My voice,’ says the Lord.
14 “Return, O backsliding children,” says the Lord; (AD)“for I am married to you. I will take you, (AE)one from a city and two from a family, and I will bring you to (AF)Zion. 15 And I will give you (AG)shepherds according to My heart, who will (AH)feed you with knowledge and understanding.
16 “Then it shall come to pass, when you are multiplied and (AI)increased in the land in those days,” says the Lord, “that they will say no more, ‘The ark of the covenant of the Lord.’ (AJ)It shall not come to mind, nor shall they remember it, nor shall they visit it, nor shall it be made anymore.
17 “At that time Jerusalem shall be called The Throne of the Lord, and all the nations shall be gathered to it, (AK)to the name of the Lord, to Jerusalem. No more shall they (AL)follow[c] the dictates of their evil hearts.
18 “In those days (AM)the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of (AN)the north to (AO)the land that I have given as an inheritance to your fathers.
19 “But I said:
‘How can I put you among the children
And give you (AP)a pleasant land,
A beautiful heritage of the hosts of nations?’
“And I said:
‘You shall call Me, (AQ)“My Father,”
And not turn away from Me.’
20 Surely, as a wife treacherously departs from her [d]husband,
So (AR)have you dealt treacherously with Me,
O house of Israel,” says the Lord.
21 A voice was heard on (AS)the desolate heights,
Weeping and supplications of the children of Israel.
For they have perverted their way;
They have forgotten the Lord their God.
22 “Return, you backsliding children,
And I will (AT)heal your backslidings.”
“Indeed we do come to You,
For You are the Lord our God.
23 (AU)Truly, in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills,
And from the multitude of mountains;
(AV)Truly, in the Lord our God
Is the salvation of Israel.
24 (AW)For shame has devoured
The labor of our fathers from our youth—
Their flocks and their herds,
Their sons and their daughters.
25 We lie down in our shame,
And our [e]reproach covers us.
(AX)For we have sinned against the Lord our God,
We and our fathers,
From our youth even to this day,
And (AY)have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God.”

Israel ha sido infiel al Señor
3 El Señor dice:
«Si un hombre se divorcia de su mujer
y ella, al separarse de él,
se casa con otro hombre,
el primero no volverá a unirse con ella.
¡Eso sería una grave ofensa al país!
Sin embargo, tú, Israel,
te has prostituido con muchos amantes,
¡y ahora quieres volver a mí!
Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo.
2 »Mira las lomas peladas, fíjate bien:
¿dónde no te has dejado deshonrar?
Sentada como árabe del desierto,
a la orilla del camino esperabas a tus amantes.
Has manchado el país con tu prostitución y tu maldad.
3 Por eso han faltado las lluvias
en invierno y primavera.
Tienes el descaro de una prostituta;
¡debería darte vergüenza!
4 Hace poco me decías:
“Padre mío, amigo de mi juventud,
5 ¿vas a estar siempre enojado?,
¿te va a durar la ira para siempre?”
Y mientras decías esto,
hacías todo el mal que podías.»
El Señor exhorta a Israel y a Judá al arrepentimiento
6 En tiempos del rey Josías me dijo el Señor: «¿Has visto lo que hizo la rebelde Israel? Fue y se dedicó a la prostitución sobre toda loma alta y bajo todo árbol frondoso. 7 Yo pensé que, aun después de todo lo que ella había hecho, volvería a mí; pero no volvió. Su hermana, la infiel Judá, vio esto; 8 y vio también que yo repudié a la rebelde Israel y que me divorcié de ella precisamente por el adulterio cometido. Pero Judá, la infiel hermana de Israel, no tuvo temor, sino que también ella fue y se dedicó a la prostitución. 9 Y lo hizo con tanta facilidad, que profanó el país. Me fue infiel adorando a las piedras y a los árboles. 10 Y después de todo esto, la infiel Judá tampoco volvió a mí de todo corazón, sino que me engañó. Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo.»
11 El Señor me dijo: «La rebelde Israel es menos culpable que la infiel Judá. 12 Ve y anuncia este mensaje mirando hacia el norte:
»“El Señor afirma:
¡Vuelve a mí, rebelde Israel!
No te recibiré de mal modo
ni mantendré mi enojo por siempre,
porque soy bondadoso.
Yo, el Señor, doy mi palabra.
13 Reconoce tan sólo tu maldad,
y que fuiste rebelde contra el Señor tu Dios;
que corriste en busca de amores extraños
debajo de todo árbol frondoso,
y que no obedeciste mis órdenes.
Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo.”»
14 El Señor afirma: «Regresen, hijos rebeldes, pues yo soy su dueño. Tomaré uno de cada ciudad y dos de cada clan, y los haré volver a Sión. 15 Les daré los gobernantes que a mí me agradan, y ellos los gobernarán a ustedes con sabiduría y entendimiento. 16 Y cuando ustedes hayan aumentado en el país y tengan ya muchos hijos, nadie volverá a hablar más del arca de la alianza del Señor; nadie pensará en ella ni se acordará más de ella; ya no hará falta ni se hará una nueva. Yo, el Señor, doy mi palabra. 17 Jerusalén será llamada entonces el trono del Señor; todas las naciones se reunirán allí para honrarme, y no volverán a seguir tercamente las malas inclinaciones de su corazón.
18 »Cuando llegue ese día, Judá se unirá a Israel, y juntos regresarán del país del norte a la tierra que di como herencia a los antepasados de ustedes.
La idolatría de Israel
19 »Israel, yo decidí aceptarte como hijo
y darte una tierra envidiable,
el país más bello de todo el mundo.
Yo pensé que me llamarías padre
y que nunca te alejarías de mí.
20 Pero como una mujer que es infiel a su esposo,
así ustedes me fueron infieles.
Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo.
21 »Se oyen voces en las lomas desiertas:
¡son los israelitas, que lloran y piden compasión!
Se desviaron del camino recto
y se olvidaron de mí, el Señor su Dios.
22 Vuélvanse a mí, hijos rebeldes,
y yo los curaré de su rebeldía.»
Respuesta de los israelitas al Señor
«Aquí estamos, acudimos a ti,
porque tú eres el Señor nuestro Dios.
23 De nada nos sirve ir a las colinas
o gritar sobre los montes;
sólo en el Señor nuestro Dios
encuentra Israel su salvación.
24 La vergonzosa idolatría nos ha hecho perder
lo que nuestros padres consiguieron
desde que éramos niños:
ovejas y ganado, hijos e hijas.
25 Humillémonos, pues, avergonzados,
cubiertos de deshonra,
pues desde niños y hasta ahora,
nosotros y nuestros antepasados
hemos pecado contra el Señor nuestro Dios
y no le hemos obedecido.»
