36 Also, thou Ben Adam, prophesy unto the harim of Yisroel, and say, Ye harim of Yisroel hear the Devar Hashem.

²Thus saith Adonoi Hashem: Because the oyev hath said against you, Aha, even the bamot olam (ancient heights) are ours in possession,

³Therefore prophesy and say, Thus saith Adonoi Hashem: Because they have made you desolate, and crushed you on every side, that ye might be a possession unto the she’erit HaGoyim, and ye are taken up in the lips of talkers, and are slandered by the people:

⁴Therefore, ye harim of Yisroel, hear the Devar Adonoi Hashem: Thus saith Adonoi Hashem to the harim, and to the geva’ot, to the ravines, and to the ge’ayot, to desolate ruins, to towns deserted which became a plunder and mockery to the she’erit HaGoyim that are all around;

⁵Therefore thus saith Adonoi Hashem: Surely in the eish of My kina have I spoken against the she’erit HaGoyim, and against all Edom, which have given My land into their possession with simchat kol levav, with she’at nefesh (scorn of soul, contempt), as her migrash for plunder.

⁶Prophesy therefore concerning Admat Yisroel, and say unto the harim, and to the geva’ot (hills), to the ravines, and to the ge’ayot (valleys), Thus saith Adonoi Hashem: Hineni, I have spoken in My kina (jealousy) and in My chemah (fury), because ye have borne the scorn of the Goyim;

⁷Therefore thus saith Adonoi Hashem; I have lifted up Mine yad [in oath-taking], Surely the Goyim that are around you, they shall bear their own scorn.

⁸But ye, O harim of Yisroel, ye shall shoot forth your branches, and yield your p’ri to My people Yisroel; for their return [home] is at hand.

⁹For, hineni, I am for you, and I will turn unto you, and ye shall be plowed and sown;

¹⁰And I will multiply adam upon you, kol Bais Yisroel, even all of it; and the towns shall be inhabited, and the ruins shall be rebuilt;

¹¹And I will multiply upon you adam and behemah; and they shall increase and become numerous; and I will make you inhabited as in former times, and I will make you more prosperous than before; and ye shall know that I am Hashem.

¹²Indeed, I will cause adam to walk upon you, even My people Yisroel; and they shall possess thee, and thou shalt be their nachalah, and thou shalt no more again bereave them of their children.

¹³Thus saith Adonoi Hashem: Because they say unto you, Thou art a land which devourest adam, and hast bereaved thy nation of children;

¹⁴Therefore thou shalt devour adam no more, neither bereave thy nation any more, saith Adonoi Hashem.

¹⁵Neither will I cause men to hear in thee the taunts of the Goyim any more, neither shalt thou bear the cherpah of the people any more, neither shalt thou cause thy nation to stumble any more, saith Adonoi Hashem.

¹⁶Moreover the Devar Hashem came unto me, saying,

¹⁷Ben adam, when Bais Yisroel dwelt in their own land, they made it tameh by their own derech and by their doings; their derech was before Me as the tumat haniddah (contamination of a woman during her menstrual period).

¹⁸Therefore I poured My chemah upon them for their shefach dahm upon ha’aretz, for their gillulim wherewith they had made it tameh;

¹⁹And I scattered them among the Goyim, and they were dispersed through the countries; according to their derech and according to their doings I judged them.

²⁰And when they entered unto the Goyim, to where they went, they profaned Shem Kodshi (Name of My Holiness, Holy Name), when they said to them, These are the Am Hashem, and are gone forth out of His land.

²¹But I had concern for Shem Kodshi (Name of My Holiness, Holy Name), which Bais Yisroel had profaned among the Goyim, where they went.

²²Therefore say unto Bais Yisroel, thus saith Adonoi Hashem: I do not this for your sakes, O Bais Yisroel, but for the sake of Shem Kodshi, which ye have profaned among Goyim where ye went.

²³And I will show as kodesh My Shem HaGadol, which was profaned among the Goyim, which ye have profaned in the midst of them; and the Goyim shall know that I am Hashem, saith Adonoi Hashem, when I shall be set apart as kodesh in you before their eynayim.

²⁴For I will take you from among the Goyim, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own adamah (land).

²⁵Then will I sprinkle mayim tehorim upon you, and ye shall be tahor; from all your tum’a, and from all your gillulim (idols), will I make you tahor.

²⁶A lev chadash also will I give you, and a ruach chadashah will I put within you; and I will take away the lev haeven (stony heart) out of your basar, and I will give you a lev basar.

²⁷And I will put My Ruach [Hakodesh] within you, and cause you to walk in My chukkot, and ye shall be shomer over My mishpatim, and do them.

²⁸And ye shall dwell in ha’aretz that I gave to avoteichem; and ye shall be My people, and I will be your Elohim.

²⁹I will also save you from all your tumot (uncleannesses); and I will call for the dagan (grain), and will increase it, and lay no ra’av (famine) upon you.

³⁰And I will multiply the p’ri ha’etz, and the increase of the sadeh, that ye shall receive no more cherpah of ra’av (famine) among the Goyim.

³¹Then shall ye remember your own drakhim ra’im, and your doings that were not tovim, and shall loathe yourselves in your own sight for your avonot and for your to’avot.

³²Not for your sakes do I this, saith Adonoi Hashem, be it known unto you; be ashamed and humiliated for your own drakhim, O Bais Yisroel.

³³Thus saith Adonoi Hashem; In the day that I shall have made you tahor from all your avonot, I will also cause you to resettle the towns, and the ruins shall be rebuilt.

³⁴And the desolate land shall be tilled, whereas it lay shemamah (desolate) in the sight of all that passed by.

³⁵And they shall say, This land that was desolate is become like Gan Eden; and the waste and desolate and ruined towns are become fortified, and are inhabited.

³⁶Then the Goyim that are left all around you shall know that I Hashem rebuilt the ruined places, and replanted that that was desolate; I Hashem have spoken it, and I will do it.

³⁷Thus saith Adonoi Hashem: Also I will be inquired of by Bais Yisroel, to act in behalf of them; I will increase them adam as numberous as tzon.

³⁸As the tzon kadashim, as the tzon Yerushalayim in her mo’adim, so shall the ruined cities be filled with tzon adam; and they shall know that I am Hashem.

Hope for the Mountains of Israel

36 “Son of man, prophesy to the mountains of Israel^(A) and say, ‘Mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord. ²This is what the Sovereign Lord says:^(B) The enemy said of you, “Aha!^(C) The ancient heights^(D) have become our possession.^(E)”’ ³Therefore prophesy and say, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because they ravaged^(F) and crushed you from every side so that you became the possession of the rest of the nations and the object of people’s malicious talk and slander,^(G) ⁴therefore, mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Sovereign Lord: This is what the Sovereign Lord says to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys,^(H) to the desolate ruins^(I) and the deserted^(J) towns that have been plundered and ridiculed^(K) by the rest of the nations around you^(L)— ⁵this is what the Sovereign Lord says: In my burning^(M) zeal I have spoken against the rest of the nations, and against all Edom, for with glee and with malice in their hearts they made my land their own possession so that they might plunder its pastureland.’^(N) ⁶Therefore prophesy concerning the land of Israel and say to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I speak in my jealous wrath because you have suffered the scorn of the nations.^(O) ⁷Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I swear with uplifted hand^(P) that the nations around you will also suffer scorn.^(Q)

⁸“‘But you, mountains of Israel, will produce branches and fruit^(R) for my people Israel, for they will soon come home. ⁹I am concerned for you and will look on you with favor; you will be plowed and sown,^(S) ¹⁰and I will cause many people to live on you—yes, all of Israel. The towns will be inhabited and the ruins^(T) rebuilt.^(U) ¹¹I will increase the number of people and animals living on you, and they will be fruitful^(V) and become numerous. I will settle people^(W) on you as in the past^(X) and will make you prosper more than before.^(Y) Then you will know that I am the Lord. ¹²I will cause people, my people Israel, to live on you. They will possess you, and you will be their inheritance;^(Z) you will never again deprive them of their children.

¹³“‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because some say to you, “You devour people^(AA) and deprive your nation of its children,” ¹⁴therefore you will no longer devour people or make your nation childless, declares the Sovereign Lord. ¹⁵No longer will I make you hear the taunts of the nations, and no longer will you suffer the scorn of the peoples or cause your nation to fall, declares the Sovereign Lord.^(AB)’”

Israel’s Restoration Assured

¹⁶Again the word of the Lord came to me: ¹⁷“Son of man, when the people of Israel were living in their own land, they defiled it by their conduct and their actions. Their conduct was like a woman’s monthly uncleanness^(AC) in my sight.^(AD) ¹⁸So I poured out^(AE) my wrath on them because they had shed blood in the land and because they had defiled it with their idols. ¹⁹I dispersed them among the nations, and they were scattered^(AF) through the countries; I judged them according to their conduct and their actions.^(AG) ²⁰And wherever they went among the nations they profaned^(AH) my holy name, for it was said of them, ‘These are the Lord’s people, and yet they had to leave his land.’^(AI) ²¹I had concern for my holy name, which the people of Israel profaned among the nations where they had gone.^(AJ)

²²“Therefore say to the Israelites, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: It is not for your sake, people of Israel, that I am going to do these things, but for the sake of my holy name,^(AK) which you have profaned^(AL) among the nations where you have gone.^(AM) ²³I will show the holiness of my great name,^(AN) which has been profaned^(AO) among the nations, the name you have profaned among them. Then the nations will know that I am the Lord,^(AP) declares the Sovereign Lord, when I am proved holy^(AQ) through you before their eyes.^(AR)

²⁴“‘For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back into your own land.^(AS) ²⁵I will sprinkle^(AT) clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse^(AU) you from all your impurities^(AV) and from all your idols.^(AW) ²⁶I will give you a new heart^(AX) and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone^(AY) and give you a heart of flesh.^(AZ) ²⁷And I will put my Spirit^(BA) in you and move you to follow my decrees^(BB) and be careful to keep my laws.^(BC) ²⁸Then you will live in the land I gave your ancestors; you will be my people,^(BD) and I will be your God.^(BE) ²⁹I will save you from all your uncleanness. I will call for the grain and make it plentiful and will not bring famine^(BF) upon you. ³⁰I will increase the fruit of the trees and the crops of the field, so that you will no longer suffer disgrace among the nations because of famine.^(BG) ³¹Then you will remember your evil ways and wicked deeds, and you will loathe yourselves for your sins and detestable practices.^(BH) ³²I want you to know that I am not doing this for your sake, declares the Sovereign Lord. Be ashamed^(BI) and disgraced for your conduct, people of Israel!^(BJ)

³³“‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: On the day I cleanse^(BK) you from all your sins, I will resettle your towns, and the ruins^(BL) will be rebuilt.^(BM) ³⁴The desolate land will be cultivated instead of lying desolate in the sight of all who pass through it. ³⁵They will say, “This land that was laid waste has become like the garden of Eden;^(BN) the cities that were lying in ruins, desolate and destroyed, are now fortified and inhabited.^(BO)” ³⁶Then the nations around you that remain will know that I the Lord have rebuilt what was destroyed and have replanted what was desolate. I the Lord have spoken, and I will do it.’^(BP)

³⁷“This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Once again I will yield to Israel’s plea^(BQ) and do this for them: I will make their people as numerous as sheep,^(BR) ³⁸as numerous as the flocks for offerings^(BS) at Jerusalem during her appointed festivals. So will the ruined cities be filled with flocks of people. Then they will know that I am the Lord.^(BT)”

36 “And you, son of man, prophesy to the ^(A)mountains of Israel, and say, ‘O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord! ²Thus says the Lord God: “Because ^(B)the enemy has said of you, ‘Aha! ^(C)The ^[a]ancient heights ^(D)have become our possession,’ ” ’ ³therefore prophesy, and say, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Because they made you desolate and swallowed you up on every side, so that you became the possession of the rest of the nations, ^(E)and you are taken up by the lips of ^(F)talkers and slandered by the people”— ⁴therefore, O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord God! ⁶“Therefore prophesy concerning the land of Israel, and say to the mountains, the hills, the rivers, and the valleys, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Behold, I have spoken in My jealousy and My fury, because you have ^(K)borne the shame of the nations.” ⁷Therefore thus says the Lord God: “I have ^(L)raised My hand in an oath that surely the nations that are around you shall ^(M)bear their own shame. ⁸But you, O mountains of Israel, you shall shoot forth your branches and yield your fruit to My people Israel, for they are about to come. ⁹For indeed I am for you, and I will turn to you, and you shall be tilled and sown. ¹⁰I will multiply men upon you, all the house of Israel, all of it; and the cities shall be inhabited and ^(N)the ruins rebuilt. ¹¹^(O)I will multiply upon you man and beast; and they shall increase and ^[d]bear young; I will make you inhabited as in former times, and do ^(P)better for you than at your beginnings. ^(Q)Then you shall know that I am the Lord. ¹²Yes, I will cause men to walk on you, My people Israel; ^(R)they shall take possession of you, and you shall be their inheritance; no more shall you ^(S)bereave them of children.”

The Renewal of Israel

¹⁶Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying: ¹⁷“Son of man, when the house of Israel dwelt in their own land, ^(V)they defiled it by their own ways and deeds; to Me their way was like ^(W)the uncleanness of a woman in her customary impurity. ¹⁸Therefore I poured out My fury on them ^(X)for the blood they had shed on the land, and for their idols with which they had defiled it. ¹⁹So I ^(Y)scattered them among the nations, and they were dispersed throughout the countries; I judged them ^(Z)according to their ways and their deeds. ²⁰When they came to the nations, wherever they went, they ^(AA)profaned My holy name—when they said of them, ‘These are the people of the Lord, and yet they have gone out of His land.’ ²¹But I had concern ^(AB)for My holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations wherever they went.

³⁷‘Thus says the Lord God: ^(AV)“I will also let the house of Israel inquire of Me to do this for them: I will ^(AW)increase their men like a flock. ³⁸Like a ^[f]flock offered as holy sacrifices, like the flock at Jerusalem on its ^[g]feast days, so shall the ruined cities be filled with flocks of men. Then they shall know that I am the Lord.” ’ ”

36 “And you, ^(A)son of man, prophesy to ^(B)the mountains of Israel, and say, O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord. ²Thus says the Lord God: Because ^(C)the enemy said of you, ^(D)‘Aha!’ and, ‘The ancient ^(E)heights have become our possession,’ ³therefore prophesy, and say, Thus says the Lord God: Precisely because ^(F)they made you desolate and crushed you from all sides, so that you became the possession of the rest of the nations, and ^(G)you became the talk and evil gossip of the people, ⁴therefore, O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord God: Thus says the Lord God to ^(H)the mountains and the hills, the ravines and the valleys, ^(I)the desolate wastes and the deserted cities, which have become ^(J)a prey and derision to the rest of the nations all around, ⁵therefore thus says the Lord God: Surely I have spoken in ^(K)my hot jealousy against the rest of the nations and ^(L)against all Edom, who ^(M)gave my land to themselves as a possession ^(N)with wholehearted joy and ^(O)utter contempt, that they might make its pasturelands a prey. ⁶Therefore prophesy concerning the land of Israel, and say to ^(P)the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys, Thus says the Lord God: ^(Q)Behold, I have spoken in my jealous wrath, because you have suffered ^(R)the reproach of the nations. ⁷Therefore thus says the Lord God: ^(S)I swear that the nations that are all around you ^(T)shall themselves suffer reproach.

⁸“But you, O mountains of Israel, ^(U)shall shoot forth your branches and yield your fruit to my people Israel, for ^(V)they will soon come home. ⁹For ^(W)behold, I am for you, and I will turn to you, and ^(X)you shall be tilled and sown. ¹⁰And ^(Y)I will multiply people on you, the whole house of Israel, all of it. ^(Z)The cities shall be inhabited and the waste places rebuilt. ¹¹And I will multiply on you ^(AA)man and beast, and ^(AB)they shall multiply and be fruitful. The Lord's Concern for His Holy Name

¹⁶The word of the Lord came to me: ¹⁷^(AJ)“Son of man, when the house of Israel lived in their own land, ^(AK)they defiled it by their ways and their deeds. Their ways before me were ^(AL)like the uncleanness of a woman in her menstrual impurity. ¹⁸So ^(AM)I poured out my wrath upon them ^(AN)for the blood that they had shed in the land, for the idols ^(AO)with which they had defiled it. ¹⁹^(AP)I scattered them among the nations, and they were dispersed through the countries. ^(AQ)In accordance with their ways and their deeds I judged them. ²⁰But when they came to the nations, wherever they came, ^(AR)they profaned my holy name, in that people said of them, ‘These are the people of the Lord, and yet they had to go out of his land.’ ²¹But I had concern ^(AS)for my holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations to which they came.

I Will Put My Spirit Within You

²²“Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: ^(AT)It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, ^(AU)which you have profaned among the nations to which you came. ²³^(AV)And I will vindicate the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, and which you have profaned among them. ^(AW)And the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the Lord God, when through you I vindicate my holiness before their eyes. ²⁴^(AX)I will take you ^(AY)from the nations and gather you from all the countries and ^(AZ)bring you into your own land. ²⁵^(BA)I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from ^(BB)all your uncleannesses, and ^(BC)from all your idols ^(BD)I will cleanse you. ²⁶And I will give you ^(BE)a new heart, and ^(BF)a new spirit I will put within you. ^(BG)And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. ²⁷^(BH)And I will put my Spirit within you, ^(BI)and cause you to walk in my statutes and ^(BJ)be careful to obey my rules.^[a] ²⁸^(BK)You shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers, and ^(BL)you shall be my people, and I will be your God. ²⁹And ^(BM)I will deliver you from all your uncleannesses. ³³“Thus says the Lord God: On the day that ^(BT)I cleanse you from all your iniquities, ^(BU)I will cause the cities to be inhabited, and the waste places shall be rebuilt. ³⁴And the land that was desolate shall be tilled, instead of being the desolation that it was in the sight of all who passed by. ³⁵And they will say, ‘This land that was desolate has become like ^(BV)the garden of Eden, and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are now fortified and inhabited.’ ³⁶Then ^(BW)the nations that are left all around you shall know that I am the Lord; I have rebuilt the ruined places and ^(BX)replanted that which was desolate. ^(BY)I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it.

³⁷“Thus says the Lord God: This also ^(BZ)I will let the house of Israel ask me to do for them: ^(CA)to increase their people like ^(CB)a flock. ³⁸Like the flock for sacrifices,^[b] ^(CC)like the flock at Jerusalem during her appointed feasts, so ^(CD)shall the waste cities be filled with flocks of people. ^(CE)Then they will know that I am the Lord.”
