Quở Trách Sự Kiêng Ăn Sai Mục Ðích
7 Năm thứ tư của triều đại Vua Ða-ri-út, lời của Chúa đến với Xa-cha-ri vào ngày mồng bốn, tháng chín,[a] tức tháng Kích-lê. 2 Lúc ấy dân ở Bê-tên phái Sa-rê-xê, Rê-ghem Mê-léc, và phái đoàn của họ đến tìm cầu ân huệ của Chúa. 3 Họ hỏi các các vị tư tế của nhà Chúa các đạo quân và các vị tiên tri rằng, “Tôi có nên tiếp tục than khóc và kiêng cữ vào tháng năm, như tôi đã làm nhiều năm nay không?”
4 Bấy giờ lời của Chúa các đạo quân đến với tôi, 5 “Hãy nói với toàn dân trong xứ và với các tư tế rằng: Khi các ngươi kiêng ăn và than khóc vào tháng năm và tháng bảy, suốt bảy mươi năm qua, có phải vì Ta, vì chính Ta, mà các ngươi kiêng ăn chăng? 6 Khi các ngươi ăn và uống, chẳng phải các ngươi ăn và uống cho các ngươi sao? 7 Chẳng phải đó là sứ điệp Chúa đã rao báo qua các tiên tri của Ngài ngày trước, khi Giê-ru-sa-lem và các thành chung quanh còn nhiều dân cư và phồn thịnh, và khi Miền Nam và vùng đồng bằng còn nhiều người ở hay sao?”

8 Lời của Chúa đến với Xa-cha-ri rằng, 9 “Chúa các đạo quân phán thế nầy, ‘Hãy xét xử thật công minh. Mỗi người hãy lấy lòng nhân từ và thương xót đối xử với nhau. 10 Chớ áp bức góa phụ, cô nhi, kiều dân, và người nghèo. Chớ ai trong các ngươi trong lòng có ý đồ đen tối hại người khác.’ 11 Nhưng chúng đã không nghe; chúng đã nhún vai bỏ đi; chúng đã bịt tai để khỏi phải nghe thấu. 12 Chúng đã làm cho lòng chúng cứng như đá kim cương, để chúng khỏi nghe luật pháp và các sứ điệp mà Chúa các đạo quân đã gởi đến bằng Thần Ngài qua các tiên tri ngày trước. Vì vậy cơn thịnh nộ kinh khiếp từ Chúa các đạo quân đã đến. 13 Như khi Ta[b] kêu, chúng chẳng thèm nghe, nên khi chúng kêu, Ta sẽ không nghe,” Chúa các đạo quân phán. 14 “Như cuồng phong cuốn đi, Ta đã tung rải chúng ra khắp các nước chúng chưa hề biết. Do đó đất nước của chúng đã trở thành hoang vu sau khi chúng bị đem đi, đến nỗi không ai muốn đi ngang qua hay muốn trở về nữa. Như thế chúng đã biến một đất nước tốt tươi màu mỡ thành một xứ hoang tàn đổ nát.”

Obedience Better than Fasting
7 Now in the fourth year of King Darius it came to pass that the word of the Lord came to Zechariah, on the fourth day of the ninth month, Chislev, 2 when [a]the people sent [b]Sherezer, with Regem-Melech and his men, to [c]the house of God, [d]to pray before the Lord, 3 and to (A)ask the priests who were in the house of the Lord of hosts, and the prophets, saying, “Should I weep in (B)the fifth month and [e]fast as I have done for so many years?”
4 Then the word of the Lord of hosts came to me, saying, 5 “Say to all the people of the land, and to the priests: ‘When you (C)fasted and mourned in the fifth (D)and seventh months (E)during those seventy years, did you really fast (F)for Me—for Me? 6 (G)When you eat and when you drink, do you not eat and drink for yourselves? 7 Should you not have obeyed the words which the Lord proclaimed through the (H)former prophets when Jerusalem and the cities around it were inhabited and prosperous, and (I)the [f]South and the Lowland were inhabited?’ ”

8 Then the word of the Lord came to Zechariah, saying, 9 “Thus says the Lord of hosts:
(J)‘Execute true justice,
Show [g]mercy and compassion
Everyone to his brother.
10 (K)Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless,
The alien or the poor.
(L)Let none of you plan evil in his heart
Against his brother.’
11 “But they refused to heed, (M)shrugged[h] their shoulders, and (N)stopped[i] their ears so that they could not hear. 12 Yes, they made their (O)hearts like flint, (P)refusing to hear the law and the words which the Lord of hosts had sent by His Spirit through the former prophets. (Q)Thus great wrath came from the Lord of hosts. 13 Therefore it happened, that just as He proclaimed and they would not hear, so (R)they called out and I would not listen,” says the Lord of hosts. 14 “But (S)I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations which they had not known. Thus the land became desolate after them, so that no one passed through or returned; for they made the pleasant land desolate.”

2 When they had sent unto the house of God Sherezer and Regemmelech, and their men, to pray before the Lord,
3 And to speak unto the priests which were in the house of the Lord of hosts, and to the prophets, saying, Should I weep in the fifth month, separating myself, as I have done these so many years?
4 Then came the word of the Lord of hosts unto me, saying,
5 Speak unto all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, When ye fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh month, even those seventy years, did ye at all fast unto me, even to me?
6 And when ye did eat, and when ye did drink, did not ye eat for yourselves, and drink for yourselves?
7 Should ye not hear the words which the Lord hath cried by the former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and in prosperity, and the cities thereof round about her, when men inhabited the south and the plain?
8 And the word of the Lord came unto Zechariah, saying,
9 Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother:
10 And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.
11 But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear.
12 Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the Lord of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the Lord of hosts.
13 Therefore it is come to pass, that as he cried, and they would not hear; so they cried, and I would not hear, saith the Lord of hosts:
14 But I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations whom they knew not. Thus the land was desolate after them, that no man passed through nor returned: for they laid the pleasant land desolate.

7 大流士王第四年九月，就是基斯流月初四日，耶和华的话临到撒迦利亚。 2 那时伯特利人已经打发沙利色和利坚米勒并跟从他们的人，去恳求耶和华的恩， 3 并问万军之耶和华殿中的祭司和先知说：“我历年以来，在五月间哭泣斋戒，现在还当这样行吗？”

8 耶和华的话又临到撒迦利亚说： 9 “万军之耶和华曾对你们的列祖如此说：‘要按至理判断，各人以慈爱怜悯弟兄。 10 不可欺压寡妇、孤儿、寄居的和贫穷人，谁都不可心里谋害弟兄。’ 11 他们却不肯听从，扭转肩头，塞耳不听， 12 使心硬如金钢石，不听律法和万军之耶和华用灵借从前的先知所说的话。故此，万军之耶和华大发烈怒。 13 万军之耶和华说：我曾呼唤他们，他们不听，将来他们呼求我，我也不听。 14 我必以旋风吹散他们到素不认识的万国中。这样，他们的地就荒凉，甚至无人来往经过，因为他们使美好之地荒凉了。”

Justice and Mercy, Not Fasting
7 In the fourth year of King Darius, the word of the Lord came to Zechariah(A) on the fourth day of the ninth month, the month of Kislev.(B) 2 The people of Bethel had sent Sharezer and Regem-Melek, together with their men, to entreat(C) the Lord(D) 3 by asking the priests of the house of the Lord Almighty and the prophets, “Should I mourn(E) and fast in the fifth(F) month, as I have done for so many years?”
4 Then the word of the Lord Almighty came to me: 5 “Ask all the people of the land and the priests, ‘When you fasted(G) and mourned in the fifth and seventh(H) months for the past seventy years,(I) was it really for me that you fasted? 6 And when you were eating and drinking, were you not just feasting for yourselves?(J) 7 Are these not the words the Lord proclaimed through the earlier prophets(K) when Jerusalem and its surrounding towns were at rest(L) and prosperous, and the Negev and the western foothills(M) were settled?’”(N)
8 And the word of the Lord came again to Zechariah: 9 “This is what the Lord Almighty said: ‘Administer true justice;(O) show mercy and compassion to one another.(P) 10 Do not oppress the widow(Q) or the fatherless, the foreigner(R) or the poor.(S) Do not plot evil against each other.’(T)
11 “But they refused to pay attention; stubbornly(U) they turned their backs(V) and covered their ears.(W) 12 They made their hearts as hard as flint(X) and would not listen to the law or to the words that the Lord Almighty had sent by his Spirit through the earlier prophets.(Y) So the Lord Almighty was very angry.(Z)
13 “‘When I called, they did not listen;(AA) so when they called, I would not listen,’(AB) says the Lord Almighty.(AC) 14 ‘I scattered(AD) them with a whirlwind(AE) among all the nations, where they were strangers. The land they left behind them was so desolate that no one traveled through it.(AF) This is how they made the pleasant land desolate.(AG)’”
