Leefregels voor de gelovigen
2 Maar zorg dat wat jij aan de mensen leert, klopt met het gezonde woord van God.
2 Leer oudere mannen dat ze nuchter moeten zijn, fatsoenlijk, verstandig, met een gezond geloof en vol liefde en geduld.
3 Oudere vrouwen moeten dat ook zijn. Ze moeten zich gedragen op een manier die past bij mensen die bij God horen. Ze mogen niet kwaadspreken en niet aan wijn verslaafd zijn. Maar ze moeten andere mensen wijze raad kunnen geven. 4 Zo kunnen ze de jonge vrouwen leren om verstandig te worden, van hun man en kinderen te houden, 5 fatsoenlijk te zijn, het huishouden goed te doen en hun man liefdevol te dienen. Dan kunnen er geen slechte dingen van het woord van God gezegd worden.
6 Moedig ook de jonge mannen aan om in alles verstandig en bescheiden te zijn. 7 Geef hun in alles wat je doet het goede voorbeeld: in je spreken, in je geloof en in je daden. 8 Breng de boodschap op een gezonde manier. Dan kunnen de mensen die tegen ons zijn, ons tot hun ergernis nergens van beschuldigen. Ze zullen niets slechts van ons kunnen zeggen.
9 Zeg tegen de slaven[a] dat ze hun meesters in alles moeten gehoorzamen. Ze moeten hen trouw dienen, zonder tegenspreken. 10 Ze mogen niets stelen, maar moeten laten zien dat ze te vertrouwen zijn. Zo laten ze in alles zien hoe goed het woord van God onze Redder is.
11 Want God heeft laten zien hoeveel Hij van de mensen houdt: Hij wil alle mensen redden. 12 Zijn liefde en goedheid voeden ons op. Daardoor houden we ons niet meer bezig met de slechte dingen van de wereld. Voortaan kunnen we verstandig en vol geloof in deze wereld leven zoals God het wil. 13 Intussen kijken we vol verwachting uit naar het moment dat onze grote God en Redder, Jezus Christus, in al zijn macht en majesteit zal komen. 14 Hij heeft zijn leven voor ons gegeven om ons te bevrijden van het kwaad. Zo heeft Hij van ons een zuiver volk gemaakt. En dat volk is zijn eigendom. Het is de bedoeling dat dat volk zijn best doet om het goede te doen.
15 Leer de mensen deze dingen. Moedig hen aan en voed hen op in het geloof.

- Titus 2:9 In Paulus' tijd waren de slaven mensen van volken die door de Romeinen of de Grieken overwonnen waren. Over het algemeen werden ze goed behandeld. Veel van hen hadden een hoge positie. Ze verdienden geld en konden zich daarmee op den duur vrijkopen. Het grote verschil met een vrij mens was, dat ze niet weg mochten. Hun tijd en arbeid waren van hun meester. De 19e eeuwse slavernij was heel anders. Die slaven werden niet behandeld als mensen, omdat ze een andere huidskleur hadden. Ze werden mishandeld, kregen geen loon en konden zich nooit vrijkopen. Ze waren tot hun dood met lichaam, tijd en arbeid van hun meester. Dit is niet het soort slavernij waar Paulus het over heeft. Die slavernij waarin mensen zwaar mishandeld werden, is juist afgeschaft dankzij de inzet van gelovige mensen.

2 But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine: 2 that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience; 3 the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things— 4 that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 to be discreet, chaste, (A)homemakers, good, (B)obedient to their own husbands, (C)that the word of God may not be blasphemed.
6 Likewise, exhort the young men to be sober-minded, 7 in all things showing yourself to be (D)a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, (E)incorruptibility,[a] 8 sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of [b]you.
9 Exhort (F)bondservants to be obedient to their own masters, to be well pleasing in all things, not answering back, 10 not [c]pilfering, but showing all good [d]fidelity, that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things.

11 For (G)the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, 13 (H)looking for the blessed (I)hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 (J)who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed (K)and purify for Himself (L)His own special people, zealous for good works.
15 Speak these things, (M)exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise you.

Titus must teach all the believers properly
2 But as for you, Titus, you must teach people to do what is right. Teach them only the things that belong to God's true message. 2 Tell the older men to control themselves properly. They must think carefully about how they live, so that people respect them. They must continue to believe in Christ. They must continue to love other people. They must continue to be patient and strong.
3 Also, tell the older women to live in a good way. Their lives must show that they respect God. They must not say bad things about other people. They must not be drunks. They must teach what is good. 4 In this way, they can teach the young women how they should live. As a result, the young women will love their husbands and their children. 5 The young women will control themselves well and be pure in how they live. They will be good housewives who are kind to other people.[a] They will respect their husbands. If they live in a good way like that, nobody will be able to say bad things about God's message.
6 As for the young men, tell them also to control themselves wisely in how they live. 7 You yourself must always do good things too. In that way, you will show the young men how they should live. When you teach the believers, be honest and serious. 8 Teach a message that is correct, so that nobody can say anything against it. Then our enemies will be ashamed, because they cannot say anything bad about us.
9 As for slaves, tell them to obey their masters always. They must not argue with their masters. Instead, they should work well to please their masters. 10 Slaves must not take things that belong to their masters. Their masters must be able to trust them completely. Then people will respect the message that we teach about God, our Saviour.
God gives believers a new life
11 God has shown us clearly how very kind he is. He has come to save all people. 12 Because God is kind, he teaches us to stop living in a bad way. We no longer do the bad things that do not make God happy. We turn away from the bad things that belong to this world. God teaches us to control ourselves wisely while we live in this world. He teaches us to do what is right. He teaches us to please him in the way that we live.
13 Remember this: We are waiting for Jesus Christ to return to this world. When he comes, that will make us very happy. Everyone will see how great Jesus Christ is. He is our great God. He is the one who saves us from our sins. 14 He gave himself as a sacrifice on our behalf. He did that to make us free from every kind of bad thing. As a result, we can be completely good and clean inside ourselves. We can become his own special people, who want to do good things.
15 You must teach these things to the believers. Help them to live in a good way. Warn them when they do wrong things. Use all the authority that you have as a leader in the church. Make sure that everyone respects you properly.
