³ Likewise, tell the older women to be reverent in behavior, not to be slanderers or enslaved to much wine; they are to teach what is good,^(A)

⁴ so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children,

¹¹ Women^[a] likewise must be serious, not slanderers, but temperate, faithful in all things.

³ Do not adorn yourselves outwardly by braiding your hair and by wearing gold ornaments or fine clothing;^{(A) 4} rather, let your adornment be the inner self with the lasting beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in God’s sight.^{(B) 5} It was in this way long ago that the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves by being subject to their husbands.

⁹ also that the women should dress themselves in moderate clothing with reverence and self-control, not with their hair braided or with gold, pearls, or expensive clothes, ¹⁰ but with good works, as is proper for women who profess reverence for God.

Qualifications of Deacons

⁸ Deacons likewise must be serious, not double-tongued, not indulging in much wine, not greedy for money;^(A)

⁷ For a bishop,^[a] as God’s steward, must be blameless; he must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or addicted to wine or violent or greedy for gain,^(A)

⁵ The real widow, left alone, has set her hope on God and continues in supplications and prayers night and day,^{(A) 6} but the widow^[a] who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives.^{(B) 7} Give these commands as well, so that they may be above reproach.^{(C) 8} And whoever does not provide for relatives, and especially for family members, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.^(D)

⁹ Let a widow be put on the list if she is not less than sixty years old and has been married only once;^{[b] 10} she must be well attested for her good works, as one who has brought up children, shown hospitality, washed the saints’ feet, helped the afflicted, and devoted herself to doing good in every way.^(E)

² so that you may welcome her in the Lord, as is fitting for the saints, and help her in whatever she may require from you, for she has been a benefactor of many and of myself as well.

²⁰ But I have this against you: you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophet and is teaching and beguiling my servants to engage in sexual immorality^[a] and to eat food sacrificed to idols.^(A)
