16 They profess that they know God; but by their works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

But speak thou the things which befit the [a]sound [b]doctrine: that aged men be temperate, grave, sober-minded, [c]sound in faith, in love, in [d]patience: that aged women likewise be reverent in demeanor, not slanderers nor enslaved to much wine, teachers of that which is good; that they may train the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be sober-minded, chaste, workers at home, kind, being in subjection to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed: the younger men likewise exhort to be sober-minded: in all things showing thyself an ensample of good works; in thy doctrine showing uncorruptness, gravity, sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of us. Exhort [e]servants to be in subjection to their own masters, and to be well-pleasing to them in all things; not gainsaying; 10 not purloining, but showing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.

Doing Good for the Sake of the Gospel

You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine.(C) Teach the older men(D) to be temperate,(E) worthy of respect, self-controlled,(F) and sound in faith,(G) in love and in endurance.

Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers(H) or addicted to much wine,(I) but to teach what is good. Then they can urge the younger women(J) to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled(K) and pure, to be busy at home,(L) to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands,(M) so that no one will malign the word of God.(N)

Similarly, encourage the young men(O) to be self-controlled.(P) In everything set them an example(Q) by doing what is good.(R) In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.(S)

Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything,(T) to try to please them, not to talk back to them, 10 and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior(U) attractive.(V)
