1 Paolo, servo di Dio, apostolo di Gesù Cristo per chiamare alla fede gli eletti di Dio e per far conoscere la verità che conduce alla pietà 2 ed è fondata sulla speranza della vita eterna, promessa fin dai secoli eterni da quel Dio che non mentisce, 3 e manifestata poi con la sua parola mediante la predicazione che è stata a me affidata per ordine di Dio, nostro salvatore, 4 a Tito, mio vero figlio nella fede comune: grazia e pace da Dio Padre e da Cristo Gesù, nostro salvatore.
Organizzazione dei presbiteri
5 Per questo ti ho lasciato a Creta perché regolassi ciò che rimane da fare e perché stabilissi presbiteri in ogni città, secondo le istruzioni che ti ho dato: 6 il candidato deve essere irreprensibile, sposato una sola volta, con figli credenti e che non possano essere accusati di dissolutezza o siano insubordinati. 7 Il vescovo infatti, come amministratore di Dio, dev'essere irreprensibile: non arrogante, non iracondo, non dedito al vino, non violento, non avido di guadagno disonesto, 8 ma ospitale, amante del bene, assennato, giusto, pio, padrone di sé, 9 attaccato alla dottrina sicura, secondo l'insegnamento trasmesso, perché sia in grado di esortare con la sua sana dottrina e di confutare coloro che contraddicono.
Lotta contro i falsi dottori
10 Vi sono infatti, soprattutto fra quelli che provengono dalla circoncisione, molti spiriti insubordinati, chiacchieroni e ingannatori della gente. 11 A questi tali bisogna chiudere la bocca, perché mettono in scompiglio intere famiglie, insegnando per amore di un guadagno disonesto cose che non si devono insegnare. 12 Uno dei loro, proprio un loro profeta, gia aveva detto: «I Cretesi son sempre bugiardi, male bestie, ventri pigri». 13 Questa testimonianza è vera. Perciò correggili con fermezza, perché rimangano nella sana dottrina 14 e non diano più retta a favole giudaiche e a precetti di uomini che rifiutano la verità.
15 Tutto è puro per i puri; ma per i contaminati e gli infedeli nulla è puro; sono contaminate la loro mente e la loro coscienza. 16 Dichiarano di conoscere Dio, ma lo rinnegano con i fatti, abominevoli come sono, ribelli e incapaci di qualsiasi opera buona.

1 Paul, a servant of God(A) and an apostle(B) of Jesus Christ to further the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth(C) that leads to godliness(D)— 2 in the hope of eternal life,(E) which God, who does not lie,(F) promised before the beginning of time,(G) 3 and which now at his appointed season(H) he has brought to light(I) through the preaching entrusted to me(J) by the command of God(K) our Savior,(L)
4 To Titus,(M) my true son(N) in our common faith:
Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.(O)
Appointing Elders Who Love What Is Good(P)
5 The reason I left you in Crete(Q) was that you might put in order what was left unfinished and appoint[a] elders(R) in every town, as I directed you. 6 An elder must be blameless,(S) faithful to his wife, a man whose children believe[b] and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient. 7 Since an overseer(T) manages God’s household,(U) he must be blameless—not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain.(V) 8 Rather, he must be hospitable,(W) one who loves what is good,(X) who is self-controlled,(Y) upright, holy and disciplined. 9 He must hold firmly(Z) to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine(AA) and refute those who oppose it.
Rebuking Those Who Fail to Do Good
10 For there are many rebellious people, full of meaningless talk(AB) and deception, especially those of the circumcision group.(AC) 11 They must be silenced, because they are disrupting whole households(AD) by teaching things they ought not to teach—and that for the sake of dishonest gain. 12 One of Crete’s own prophets(AE) has said it: “Cretans(AF) are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons.”[c] 13 This saying is true. Therefore rebuke(AG) them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith(AH) 14 and will pay no attention to Jewish myths(AI) or to the merely human commands(AJ) of those who reject the truth.(AK) 15 To the pure, all things are pure,(AL) but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure.(AM) In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted.(AN) 16 They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him.(AO) They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.(AP)

1 Paul, a servant of God, and an Apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s Elect and the acknowledging of the Truth which is according to godliness;
2 in the hope of eternal life - which God, Who cannot lie, has promised since before the world began.
3 But He has revealed His Word in due time through preaching, which is committed to me according to the Commandment of God our Savior,
4 To Titus, my natural son according to the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior.
5 For this reason I left you in Crete, so that you would continue to organize the things which remain, and would ordain elders in every city, as I directed you
6 (if any are blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children who are not accused of wastefulness or disobedient).
7 For an overseer must be blameless, as God’s steward, not willful, not angry, not given to wine, not a brawler, not greedy;
8 but one who loves strangers and goodness, is wise, righteous, holy, temperate,
9 holding fast the faithful Word according to doctrine, so that he may also be able to encourage with sound doctrine and convince those who speak against it.
10 For there are many disobedient and empty talkers, and deceivers of minds (mainly those of the circumcision)
11 whose mouths must be stopped; who subvert whole houses, teaching things they ought not for the sake of dishonest gain.
12 One of them (one of their own Prophets) said, “The Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”
13 This witness is true! Therefore, rebuke them sharply, so that they may be sound in the faith
14 and not holding onto Jewish fables and commandments of men which turn away from the Truth.
15 To the pure, are all things pure. But, to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure. But even their minds and consciences are defiled.
16 They profess that they know God, but by works they deny Him and are abominable and disobedient and worthless as to every good work.
