Tehillim 40
Orthodox Jewish Bible
40 (40:2)(For the one directing, Of Dovid. Mizmor) I waited patiently for Hashem; and He inclined unto me, and heard my cry.
2 (3) Hashem brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.
3 (4) And He hath put a shir chadash in my mouth, even tehillah (hymn of praise) unto Eloheinu; many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in Hashem.
4 (5) Ashrei is that man that maketh Hashem his trust, and looketh not to the proud ones, nor such as turn aside to lies (false g-ds).
5 (6) Many, O Hashem Elohai, are Thy wonderful works which Thou hast done, and Thy thoughts which are to us-ward; they cannot be recounted unto Thee; if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.
6 (7) Zevach and minchah Thou didst not desire; mine ears hast Thou pierced [cf Psa 22:17]; olah (burnt offering) and chata’ah (sin offering) hast Thou not required.
7 (8) Then said I, Hinei, I come; in the megillat sefer it is written of me [cf MJ 10:5-7],
8 (9) I delight to do Thy will, O Elohai; yea, Thy torah is within my heart.
9 (10) I have preached tzedek in the kahal rav (great congregation); hinei, I have not restrained my lips, O Hashem, Thou knowest.
10 (11) I have not hid thy tzedek within my lev; I have declared Thy emunah (faithfulness) and Thy teshuah (salvation); I have not concealed Thy chesed and Thy emes from the kahal rav.
11 (12) Withhold not Thou thy rachamim from me, O Hashem; let Thy chesed and Thy emes continually preserve me.
12 (13) For innumerable evils have compassed me about; mine avonot (iniquities) have overtaken me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of mine head; therefore my lev faileth me.
13 (14) Be pleased, O Hashem, to deliver me; O Hashem, make haste to help me.
14 (15) Let them be ashamed and mutually confounded that seek after my nefesh to destroy it; let them be driven backward and put to shame that wish me evil.
15 (16) Let them be appalled because of their boshet (shame) that say unto me, Aha, aha.
16 (17) Let all those that seek Thee rejoice and be glad in Thee; let such as love Thy teshuah say continually, Hashem be magnified.
17 (18) But I am poor and needy; yet Adonoi thinketh upon me; Thou art my ezer and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O Elohai.
Psalm 40
English Standard Version
My Help and My Deliverer
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.
40 I (A)waited patiently for the Lord;
he inclined to me and (B)heard my cry.
2 He drew me up from (C)the pit of destruction,
out of (D)the miry bog,
and (E)set my feet upon a rock,
(F)making my steps secure.
3 He put (G)a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God.
Many will (H)see and fear,
and put their trust in the Lord.
4 Blessed is the man who (I)makes
the Lord his trust,
who does not turn to the proud,
to those who (J)go astray after a lie!
5 You have multiplied, O Lord my God,
your (K)wondrous deeds and your (L)thoughts toward us;
none can compare with you!
I will proclaim and tell of them,
yet they are (M)more than can be told.
6 (N)In sacrifice and offering you have not delighted,
but you have given me an open (O)ear.[a]
Burnt offering and sin offering
you have not required.
7 Then I said, “Behold, I have come;
in the scroll of the book it is written (P)of me:
8 (Q)I delight to do your will, O my God;
your law is (R)within my heart.”
9 I have told the glad news of deliverance[b]
in (S)the great congregation;
behold, I have not (T)restrained my lips,
(U)as you know, O Lord.
10 I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart;
I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation;
I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness
from the great congregation.
11 As for you, O Lord, you will not restrain
your mercy from me;
your (V)steadfast love and your faithfulness will
ever preserve me!
12 For evils have (W)encompassed me
beyond number;
my (X)iniquities have overtaken me,
and I cannot (Y)see;
they are (Z)more than the hairs of my head;
my heart (AA)fails me.
13 (AB)Be pleased, O Lord, to (AC)deliver me!
O Lord, (AD)make haste to help me!
14 (AE)Let those be put to shame and disappointed altogether
who seek to snatch away my life;
let those be (AF)turned back and brought to dishonor
who delight in my hurt!
15 Let those be appalled because of their shame
who (AG)say to me, “Aha, Aha!”
16 But may all who seek you
rejoice and be glad in you;
may those who love your salvation
(AH)say continually, “Great is the Lord!”
17 As for me, I am (AI)poor and needy,
but (AJ)the Lord takes thought for me.
You are my help and my deliverer;
do not delay, O my God!

Salmos 40
La Biblia de las Américas
Dios sustenta a su siervo
Para el director del coro. Salmo de David.
40 Al Señor esperé pacientemente(A),
y Él se inclinó a mí y oyó mi clamor(B).
2 Me sacó del hoyo de la destrucción(C), del lodo cenagoso;
3 Puso en mi boca un cántico nuevo(F), un canto de alabanza a nuestro Dios;
y muchos tus designios[c] para con nosotros(L);
nadie hay que se compare contigo;
si los anunciara, y hablara de ellos,
no podrían ser enumerados[d](M).
6 Sacrificio[e] y ofrenda de cereal no has deseado;
has abierto[f] mis oídos;
7 Entonces dije: He aquí, vengo;
en el rollo del libro está escrito de[h] mí;
8 me deleito en hacer tu voluntad, Dios mío(O);
tu ley está dentro de mi corazón[i](P).
9 He proclamado buenas nuevas de justicia en la gran congregación(Q);
he aquí, no refrenaré mis labios(R),
oh Señor, tú lo sabes(S).
10 No he escondido tu justicia dentro de mi corazón(T);
he proclamado tu fidelidad y tu salvación(U);
no he ocultado a la gran congregación tu misericordia y tu fidelidad[j].
11 Tú, oh Señor, no retengas tu compasión[k] de mí;
tu misericordia y tu fidelidad me guarden continuamente(V),
12 porque me rodean males sin número(W);
mis iniquidades me han alcanzado(X), y no puedo ver;
13 (AA)Ten a bien, oh Señor, libertarme;
apresúrate, Señor, a socorrerme(AB).
14 Sean avergonzados y humillados a una(AC)
los que buscan mi vida[m] para destruirla(AD);
16 Regocíjense y alégrense en ti todos los que te buscan;
Tú eres mi socorro y mi libertador;
Dios mío, no te tardes.

burnt offerings(U) and sin offerings[d] you did not require.

your law is within my heart.”(Y)

may your love(AF) and faithfulness(AG) always protect(AH) me.
12 For troubles(AI) without number surround me;
my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see.(AJ)
They are more than the hairs of my head,(AK)
and my heart fails(AL) within me.
13 Be pleased to save me, Lord;
come quickly, Lord, to help me.(AM)
14 May all who want to take my life(AN)
be put to shame and confusion;(AO)
may all who desire my ruin(AP)
be turned back in disgrace.
15 May those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”(AQ)
be appalled at their own shame.
16 But may all who seek you(AR)
rejoice and be glad(AS) in you;
may those who long for your saving help always say,
“The Lord is great!”(AT)
