Solomon Admires His Bride's Beauty

He

Behold, (A)you are beautiful, my love,
    behold, you are beautiful!
(B)Your eyes are doves
    (C)behind your veil.
(D)Your hair is like a flock of goats
    leaping down (E)the slopes of Gilead.
Your (F)teeth are like a flock of shorn ewes
    that have come up from the washing,
all of which bear twins,
    and not one among them has lost its young.
Your lips are like (G)a scarlet thread,
    and your mouth is (H)lovely.
Your (I)cheeks are like halves of a pomegranate
    (J)behind your veil.
Your (K)neck is like the tower of David,
    built in (L)rows of stone;[a]
on it (M)hang a thousand shields,
    all of (N)them shields of warriors.
Your (O)two breasts are like two (P)fawns,
    twins of a gazelle,
    that (Q)graze among the lilies.
(R)Until the day breathes
    and the shadows flee,
I will go away to the mountain of (S)myrrh
    and the hill of (T)frankincense.
(U)You are altogether beautiful, my love;
    there is no (V)flaw in you.
(W)Come with me from (X)Lebanon, my (Y)bride;
    come with me from (Z)Lebanon.
Depart[b] from the peak of Amana,
    from the peak of (AA)Senir and (AB)Hermon,
from the dens of lions,
    from the mountains of leopards.

You have captivated my heart, my (AC)sister, my bride;
    you have captivated my heart with one glance of your eyes,
    with one (AD)jewel of your necklace.
10 How beautiful is your love, my (AE)sister, my bride!
    How much (AF)better is your love than wine,
    and (AG)the fragrance of your oils than any spice!
11 Your (AH)lips drip nectar, my bride;
    (AI)honey and milk are under your tongue;
    the fragrance of your garments is (AJ)like the fragrance of (AK)Lebanon.
12 A garden locked is my (AL)sister, my bride,
    a spring locked, (AM)a fountain (AN)sealed.
13 Your shoots are (AO)an orchard of pomegranates
    with all (AP)choicest fruits,
    (AQ)henna with (AR)nard,
14 nard and saffron, (AS)calamus and (AT)cinnamon,
    with all trees of (AU)frankincense,
(AV)myrrh and (AW)aloes,
    with all (AX)choice spices—
15 a garden fountain, a well of (AY)living water,
    and flowing streams from (AZ)Lebanon.

16 Awake, O north wind,
    and come, O south wind!
Blow upon my (BA)garden,
    let its spices flow.

Together in the Garden of Love

She

(BB)Let my beloved come to his (BC)garden,
    and eat its (BD)choicest fruits.

He

I (BE)came to my garden, my (BF)sister, my bride,
    I gathered my (BG)myrrh with my spice,
    I ate my (BH)honeycomb with my honey,
    I (BI)drank my wine with my milk.

Others

Eat, (BJ)friends, drink,
    and be drunk with love!

The Bride Searches for Her Beloved

She

I slept, but my heart was awake.
A sound! My beloved is (BK)knocking.
“Open to me, my (BL)sister, my (BM)love,
    my (BN)dove, my (BO)perfect one,
for my head is wet with dew,
    my (BP)locks with the drops of the night.”
(BQ)I had put off my garment;
    how could I put it on?
I had (BR)bathed my feet;
    how could I soil them?
My beloved put his hand to the latch,
    and my heart was thrilled within me.
I arose to open to my beloved,
    and my hands dripped with myrrh,
my fingers with (BS)liquid myrrh,
    on the handles of the bolt.
I opened to my beloved,
    but my beloved had turned and gone.
My soul failed me when he (BT)spoke.
(BU)I sought him, but found him not;
    (BV)I called him, but he gave no answer.
(BW)The watchmen found me
    as they went about in the city;
they beat me, they bruised me,
    they took away my veil,
    those watchmen of the walls.
I (BX)adjure you, O (BY)daughters of Jerusalem,
    if you find my beloved,
that you tell him
    (BZ)I am sick with love.

Others

What is your beloved more than another beloved,
    O (CA)most beautiful among women?
What is your beloved more than another beloved,
    that you thus (CB)adjure us?

The Bride Praises Her Beloved

She

10 My beloved is radiant and (CC)ruddy,
    (CD)distinguished among ten thousand.
11 His head is the finest gold;
    (CE)his locks are wavy,
    black as a raven.
12 His (CF)eyes are like doves
    beside streams of water,
bathed in milk,
    sitting beside a full pool.[c]
13 His (CG)cheeks are like (CH)beds of spices,
    mounds of sweet-smelling herbs.
His lips are (CI)lilies,
    dripping (CJ)liquid myrrh.
14 His arms are rods of gold,
    set with (CK)jewels.
His body is polished ivory,[d]
    bedecked with (CL)sapphires.[e]
15 His legs are alabaster columns,
    set on bases of gold.
His appearance is like (CM)Lebanon,
    choice as the cedars.
16 His (CN)mouth[f] is most sweet,
    and he is altogether desirable.
This is my beloved and this is my friend,
    O (CO)daughters of Jerusalem.

Others

Where has your beloved gone,
    O (CP)most beautiful among women?
Where has your beloved turned,
    that we may seek him with you?

Together in the Garden of Love

She

My beloved has gone down to his (CQ)garden
    to (CR)the beds of spices,
to (CS)graze[g] in the gardens
    and to gather (CT)lilies.
(CU)I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine;
    he grazes among the lilies.

Solomon and His Bride Delight in Each Other

He

You are beautiful as (CV)Tirzah, (CW)my love,
    (CX)lovely as (CY)Jerusalem,
    (CZ)awesome as an army with banners.
Turn away your eyes from me,
    for they overwhelm me—
(DA)Your hair is like a flock of goats
    leaping down the slopes of Gilead.
(DB)Your teeth are like a flock of ewes
    that have come up from the washing;
all of them bear twins;
    not one among them has lost its young.
(DC)Your cheeks are like halves of a pomegranate
    behind your veil.
There are (DD)sixty (DE)queens and eighty (DF)concubines,
    and (DG)virgins without number.
My (DH)dove, my (DI)perfect one, is the only one,
    the only one of her mother,
    pure to (DJ)her who bore her.
(DK)The young women saw her and called her blessed;
    (DL)the queens and (DM)concubines also, and they praised her.

10 (DN)“Who is this who looks down like the dawn,
    beautiful as the moon, bright as the sun,
    (DO)awesome as an army with banners?”

She

11 I went down to the nut orchard
    to look at (DP)the blossoms of the valley,
(DQ)to see whether the vines had budded,
    whether the pomegranates were in bloom.
12 (DR)Before I was aware, my desire set me
    among (DS)the chariots of my kinsman, a prince.[h]

Others

13 [i] Return, return, O (DT)Shulammite,
    return, return, that we may look upon you.

He

Why should you look upon (DU)the Shulammite,
    as upon (DV)a dance before (DW)two armies?[j]

How beautiful are your feet in sandals,
    O (DX)noble daughter!
Your rounded thighs are like (DY)jewels,
    the work of (DZ)a master hand.
Your navel is a rounded bowl
    that never lacks mixed wine.
Your belly is a heap of wheat,
    encircled with (EA)lilies.
(EB)Your two breasts are like two fawns,
    twins of a gazelle.
Your (EC)neck is like an ivory tower.
Your (ED)eyes are pools in (EE)Heshbon,
    by the gate of Bath-rabbim.
Your nose is like a tower of (EF)Lebanon,
    which looks toward (EG)Damascus.
Your head crowns you like (EH)Carmel,
    and your (EI)flowing locks are like purple;
    a king is held captive in the tresses.

(EJ)How beautiful and (EK)pleasant you are,
    O loved one, with all your delights![k]
Your stature is like a palm tree,
    and your breasts are like its clusters.
I say I will climb the palm tree
    and lay hold of its fruit.
Oh may your breasts be like (EL)clusters of the vine,
    and the scent of your breath like apples,
and your (EM)mouth[l] like the best wine.

She

It goes down smoothly for my beloved,
    gliding over lips and teeth.[m]

10 (EN)I am my beloved's,
    (EO)and his desire is for me.

The Bride Gives Her Love

11 (EP)Come, my beloved,
    let us go out into the fields
    and lodge in the villages;[n]
12 let us go out early to the vineyards
    (EQ)and see whether the vines have budded,
whether (ER)the grape blossoms have opened
    and the pomegranates are in bloom.
There I will give you my love.
13 (ES)The mandrakes give forth fragrance,
    and beside our doors are all choice fruits,
(ET)new as well as old,
    which I have laid up for you, O my beloved.

Longing for Her Beloved

Oh that you were like a brother to me
    who nursed at my mother's breasts!
If I found you outside, I would kiss you,
    and none would despise me.
I would lead you and (EU)bring you
    into the house of my mother—
    she who used to teach me.
I would give you (EV)spiced wine to drink,
    the juice of my pomegranate.
(EW)His left hand is under my head,
    and his right hand embraces me!
I (EX)adjure you, O (EY)daughters of Jerusalem,
    (EZ)that you not stir up or awaken love
    until it pleases.

(FA)Who is that coming up from the wilderness,
    leaning on her beloved?

Under the apple tree I awakened you.
There your mother was in labor with you;
    there she who bore you was in labor.

Set me as a seal upon your heart,
    as (FB)a seal upon your arm,
for (FC)love is strong as death,
    (FD)jealousy[o] is fierce as the grave.[p]
Its flashes are flashes of fire,
    the very (FE)flame of the Lord.
Many waters cannot quench love,
    neither can floods drown it.
If a man offered for love
    all the wealth of his (FF)house,
    he[q] would be utterly despised.

Final Advice

Others

We have a little sister,
    and she (FG)has no breasts.
What shall we do for our sister
    on the day when she is spoken for?
If she is a wall,
    we will build on her a battlement of silver,
but if she is a door,
    we will enclose her with (FH)boards of cedar.

She

10 (FI)I was a wall,
    and my (FJ)breasts were like towers;
then I was in his eyes
    as one who finds[r] peace.

11 Solomon had (FK)a vineyard at Baal-hamon;
    he (FL)let out the vineyard to (FM)keepers;
    each one was to bring for its fruit (FN)a thousand pieces of silver.
12 My vineyard, my very own, is before me;
    you, O Solomon, may have the thousand,
    and (FO)the keepers of the fruit two hundred.

He

13 (FP)O you who dwell in the gardens,
    with (FQ)companions listening for your voice;
    (FR)let me hear it.

She

14 (FS)Make haste, my beloved,
    and be (FT)like a gazelle
or a young stag
    on (FU)the mountains of spices.

The Beginning of Knowledge

(A)The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel:

To know wisdom and instruction,
    to understand words of insight,
to receive instruction in wise dealing,
    in (B)righteousness, justice, and equity;
to give prudence to (C)the simple,
    knowledge and (D)discretion to the youth—
Let the wise hear and (E)increase in learning,
    and the one who understands obtain guidance,
to understand a proverb and a saying,
    (F)the words of the wise and their (G)riddles.

(H)The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;
    fools despise wisdom and instruction.

The Enticement of Sinners

(I)Hear, my son, your father's instruction,
    and forsake not your mother's teaching,
for they are (J)a graceful garland for your head
    and (K)pendants for your neck.
10 My son, if sinners (L)entice you,
    do not consent.
11 If they say, “Come with us, (M)let us lie in wait for blood;
    (N)let us ambush the innocent without reason;
12 like Sheol let us (O)swallow them alive,
    and whole, like (P)those who go down to the pit;
13 we shall find all precious goods,
    we shall fill our houses with plunder;
14 throw in your lot among us;
    we will all have one purse”—
15 my son, (Q)do not walk in the way with them;
    (R)hold back your foot from their paths,
16 for (S)their feet run to evil,
    and they make haste to shed blood.
17 (T)For in vain is a net spread
    in the sight of any bird,
18 but these men (U)lie in wait for their own blood;
    they (V)set an ambush for their own lives.
19 (W)Such are the ways of everyone who is (X)greedy for unjust gain;
    (Y)it takes away the life of its possessors.

The Call of Wisdom

20 (Z)Wisdom cries aloud in the street,
    in the markets she raises her voice;
21 at the head of the noisy streets she cries out;
    at (AA)the entrance of the city gates she speaks:
22 “How long, O (AB)simple ones, will you love being simple?
How long will (AC)scoffers delight in their scoffing
    and fools (AD)hate knowledge?
23 If you turn at my reproof,[a]
behold, I will (AE)pour out my spirit to you;
    I will make my words known to you.
24 (AF)Because I have called and (AG)you refused to listen,
    have (AH)stretched out my hand and no one has heeded,
25 because you have (AI)ignored all my counsel
    and (AJ)would have none of my reproof,
26 I also (AK)will laugh at your calamity;
    I will mock when (AL)terror strikes you,
27 when terror strikes you like (AM)a storm
    and your calamity comes like a whirlwind,
    when distress and anguish come upon you.
28 (AN)Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer;
    they will seek me diligently but will not find me.
29 Because they (AO)hated knowledge
    and (AP)did not choose the fear of the Lord,
30 (AQ)would have none of my counsel
    and (AR)despised all my reproof,
31 therefore they shall eat (AS)the fruit of their way,
    and have (AT)their fill of their own devices.
32 For the simple are killed by (AU)their turning away,
    and (AV)the complacency of fools destroys them;
33 but (AW)whoever listens to me will dwell secure
    and will be (AX)at ease, without dread of disaster.”
